How has technology changed our lives for the better TIME will tell you! The magazine has picked its 100 best inventions of 2021. Here we present you some of the most creative examples.
The Learning Passport
Many schools have closed their doors since the COVID-19 pandemic (新冠疫情) broke out. Home school has been difficult for some students because of slow internet service. To make matters worse, some students don’t even have an internet connection at home. The Learning Passport has a solution. The project offers browser-or-app-based (基于浏览器或手机应用的) classes. These classes do not require a consistent (持续的) internet connection. Instead, students download their lessons when there is internet connection. They can then complete the lessons later, offline.
Blue Jeans Go Green
Jeans are a fashion favorite. Every year more than 4.5 billion pairs are sold around the world. But the production of jeans is harmful to the environment. To color them, factories use synthetic indigo dye (合成靛青染料). During the process, the chemicals in the dye cause water to become polluted. Bio-technology company Huue has created bacteria (细菌) that can turn natural sugars into indigo dye—without having any negative environmental impacts.
Battery Swapping for EVs
Electric-vehicles(EV) are popular these days. However, they still face a major problem: they can take several hours to charge (充电). This is inconvenient for many drivers. One answer to this problem lies in battery-swapping (电池替换). When an EV pulls into one of these battery-swapping stations, its depleted (耗尽的) battery is removed, and a full charged one replaces it. American company Ample has designed a universal battery. It works with all types of EVs.
31. The Learning Passport is ________.

Do We Really Need Smart Cities
Cities around the world are racing to become “smart”. It’s just like a classroom full of hard-working students. Take Toronto, Canada, for example. Technology (Tech) company Google has made a 1,500-page plan. It’s going to remake two neighborhoods with things like snow-melting (融雪的) roads.
To build smart cities, we need lots of new technologies, such as robots and artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies will lead to safer and more efficient cities. However, they will also raise questions about privacy (隐私).
But there is a more serious problem: Smart cities will be difficult to manage.
As we know all too well from our personal lives, sometimes tech products are not dependable. The Internet and our computers break down regularly. Tech products also age quickly. Only a few years into their lives, problems may become more and more common.
In smart cities, many basic systems and services, such as water services, are based on such tech products. What if they break down regularly Can you imagine the result
New technologies in 2020 will be outdated before 2025. If we use smart technologies widely in cities, we will need to be prepared to replace them every few years. But who would want to pay this bill
The most important problem is whether having a smart city will make us better at solving city problems. Smart technologies can’t solve problems on their own. Suppose AI programs discover a road that needs to be repaired. It still requires people to do the job, doesn’t it
As an engineer, I think smart technologies should have a place in cities. However, that place is not everywhere. For many of our city problems, we don’t really need the latest technologies. The best of the old ideas work better.
36. The underlined word “students” in Paragraph 1 refers to “_____”.
A. cities in Canada B. advanced technologies
C. cities around the world D. people living in the cities
37. What is tech company Google going to do
A. Invent snow-melting roads. B. Remake 2 neighborhoods in Toronto.
C. Keep the company more efficient. D. Make a plan for rebuilding Toronto.
38. What do we need to build smart cities according to the passage
A. The best of old ideas. B. Lots of new technologies.
C. More building materials. D. The Internet and computers.
39. The example of a road that needs to be repaired is used to show __________.
A. tech products break down regularly in smart cities
B. it is difficult and expensive to manage a smart city
C. smart technologies can't solve problems on their own
D. many new technologies become outdated in five years
40.Which of the following titles is also suitable for this passage
A. How People Build a Smart City B. The Smartest City in the World
C. The Advantages of Smart Cities D. Why I Don’t Support Smart Cities

Nowadays along with the booming of computer science, computers are widely used here and there. People even can find computers in most classrooms. While teachers remain more or less the same, computers are doubling in speed and capability every four years. ___41___ As far as I am concerned, teachers still play a major role and are still of great importance.
___42___ However advanced they may be, computers are nothing more than human inventions programmed to perform certain tasks.
They are unable to deal with students with different background. Needless to say, a classroom is a place where individual attention and creativity matter most. Therefore, computers are no better than other tools used by teachers and couldn’t possibly make the roles played by them weaker.
In terms of accuracy and the amount of information, computers outshine humans. ___43___ Indeed, a good teacher organizes and inspires the students.
Besides, the interaction between students and teachers is vital for the learning. According to most education authorities, real learning occurs during the discussion and sharing of ideas with one’s teacher and classmates. Moreover, a teacher is there to monitor every slight change in students’ attitude, to respond to and encourage them whenever they show signs of frustration and impatience. ___44___
Despite the increasing presence of computers inside classrooms, teachers are just as essential, if not more so, as instructors were in the past. ___45___
A. It’s time that teachers should develop themselves.
B. Without this kind of interaction, education is unimaginable.
C. Advanced as computers may be, some teachers are less impatient.
D. But to make a good teacher means far more than being an encyclopedia (百科全书).
E. People can’t help wondering whether teachers are as important as they once were.
F. Some drawbacks make it impossible for computers to replace teachers in classrooms.
G. It is well known that computers are better at repetitive work but incapable of creative thinking.

40.考查标题归纳题。根据“As an engineer, I think smart technologies should have a place in cities. However, that place is not everywhere. For many of our city problems, we don’t really need the latest technologies. The best of the old ideas work better.”(作为一名工程师,我认为智能技术应该在城市中占有一席之地。然而,这个地方并不是到处都是。对于我们的许多城市问题,我们并不需要最新的技术。最好的旧想法效果更好。)以及全文可知,作者不太支持智慧城市的想法,故选D。
