Taking away a city’s rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into the city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can’t eat or use. If we kept things, we would soon have a mountain rubbish.
In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of city to a dump (垃圾堆). Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places.
To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you’d never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.
In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus(腐殖质), which looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help make them grow.

B. Answer the questions (根据短文回答下列问题):
In the 13th century, the famous European traveller Marco Polo went to China. On his travels, he saw many wonderful things. He discovered that the Chinese used money made of paper. In the west, paper money was not used until the 15th century. However, paper money was used in China from the seventh century onwards.
Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Ts’ai Lun in AD 105. He made it from the wood of a special kind of tree. Ts’ai Lun took the wood and made it into flat sheets. Then he glued these flat sheets of paper together and made them into a book.
Nowadays, paper still comes from trees. Unfortunately, we use a lot of paper every day. We must not waste or there will not be any trees left on the earth. No trees means no paper. We need 17 trees to make one ton of paper. We must start using less paper now because it takes about 100 years for a tree to grow.
How can we save paper Firstly, we can use both sides of every sheet of paper. We can reuse envelopes. We can choose drinks in bottles instead of drinks in cardboard cartons. We can use plastic cups and plates instead of paper ones. We can use handkerchiefs instead of paper tissues. We can use fewer paper shopping bags and we can reuse these paper bags later as well.
1. What did Marco Polo discover in China
He discovered ____________________________________________.
2. European people didn’t use paper money in the 7th century, did they
