Icebergs (冰山) are pieces of ice floating in an ocean or lake. They come in all shapes and sizes. A large iceberg can be as big as the size of a small country. However, smaller icebergs can be especially dangerous for ships because they are much more difficult to be found.
The most famous accident caused by icebergs might be the Titanic disaster. The ship Titanic hit an iceberg and soon fell into the Atlantic Ocean. 1,517 people died in the accident and is considered one of the worst sea disasters in history. But why couldn’t the ship avoid the iceberg in time
One of the characteristics (特点) of the iceberg is that most of it remains under water. Because the density (密度) of ice is about 920 kg/m3, and that of sea water about 1025 kg/m3, normally only one-ninth of an iceberg remains above water. In other words, it’s usually the tip that we see floating. The captain stopped the ship as soon as he saw the iceberg, but it was still too late for him to avoid crashing with the iceberg underneath.
This has led to the expression “tip of the iceberg”. When you say a problem is “just the tip of the iceberg”, it means that the problem is much more serious than it appears to be. What you see is only a small part of a really big problem.
( ) 53. Smaller icebergs are dangerous for ships because _________.
A. they move fast

C. it’s not easy to find them

( ) 56. The captain of the ship Titanic _________.

C. was tired and careless

C. mountain D. person

When I saw a big “65” on my Maths paper, I was shocked. I had never received such a terrible grade before.
When I got home that afternoon, I lied to my dad. I told him I got 85 and that the report wouldn’t come until the end of the month. Dad smiled. His daughter would never lie about her grade, so he didn’t doubt (怀疑) my words.
A month later Dad asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and asked for an answer. Having no choice, I told him that I had in fact got just 65 in my Maths final. I had lied because I didn’t want to let him down (使……失望).
For a moment, he just looked at me. Finally, he said, in a hurt voice, “You have already let me down, with your lie. I am not disappointed at your Maths score. No one can be perfect all the time. But I am very disappointed in you. If you can’t be honest with your dad, who can you be honest with It’s much easier to get a better grade than rebuild someone else’s trust in you.”
Dad’s words touched my heart. I could not forgive myself for having hurt his feelings. I took out the report that I had been hiding for weeks, handed to him and apologized sincerely. I realized that my honesty is not only important to me, but to those around me that truly care about me.

Calculating machines in our daily life
As we all know, calculating machines are very important in our daily life. Although abacuses are one of the first calculating machines, few people use them nowadays. More people prefer to use modern electronic calculators and computers. A computer is so powerful that it can do a calculation that you cannot do in your whole lifetime. I think calculating machines are helpful to our study, work and life.
