Emily and Alex were happy when their family moved to a house with a very big garden. They could climb up trees, grow flowers and even play badminton. They liked to watch the birds flying among the trees in the garden. They even started to put food out to attract more birds.
Everything was fine for a few days until one afternoon there was a strange bumping noise on a window. Emily went outside and found a small bird dead on the grass. Its neck seemed to be broken.
“It must have flown into the window,” Alex said when his sister Emily called him to have a look. “Ah, yes, look here. You can see the mark where it hit the window. There are a couple of tiny feathers stuck (粘贴) on the window.”
“Poor thing!” Emily said.
During the next month, five more birds died in the same way. “Why would they fly to the windows ” they wondered. Finally they found out the truth. When the birds were flying, they couldn’t see into the rooms. All they saw was the reflection (反射) of the garden. They thought that they were flying into trees because they saw trees reflected by the window.
“Something has to be done to save the birds.” the parents decided.
At first, the family tried keeping curtains (窗帘) across the windows, but this made the room dark. Then they bought some strong black paper and cut out the shape of a hawk. They made six hawks—one for each window. They stuck the hawks to the windows. They looked pretty and did not keep out much light. When the birds saw the hawks, they would fly away.
After that, there were no more dead birds. The family were much happier.

Car Free Day encourages drivers to give up their cars for a day to protect the environment. People from around the world get together in the streets to remind the world that we don’t have to accept the society full of cars. It started from France in 1998. Because of the air and noise pollution, some French young people wanted a day without cars. On September 22nd, people in 35 cities in France didn’t use their cars. They went to work or school by bike, bus or on foot. After that, September 22nd became Car Free Day. The first Car Free Day in China was in Chengdu in 2001. The slogan (口号) for the day is “If we drive for one less day, we can have one more nice day.”
Organized activities are held in many cities on Car Free Day. In Brussels, Car Free Day shall be valid (有效的) for everybody except persons with a special permit (许可证), but they have to slow down to the speed of 30 kilometres per hour. The public transportations are encouraged. The streets are open only to walkers, bicycles and buses from 7:00 a.m. to
7:00 p.m. In Beijing, it asks drivers to leave their cars at home for one day each month and walk or ride a bike to work. More and more people are taking part in the activity. In the first quarter of this year, Beijing only had 52 blue sky days, and you may see haze (雾霾) almost every day! We must do more for Car Free Day as a Beijing driver said, “We may not change the weather, but we can choose not to drive.”
But we do not want just one day and then a return to “normal” life. We should go on with Car Free Day.

A crow and a jar
A crow is very thirsty. She finds some water in a jar, but unfortunately she can’t reach the water because the mouth of the jar is too small. She looks around and sees some stones nearby. A good idea comes to her mind. She picks up some small stones and drops them into the jar. By and by, the water rises up so that she has a nice drink at last. What a clever crow!
From the fable we’ve learned that nothing can’t be done so long as we use our mind and make our efforts. The crow sets us a good example indeed.
