Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes Let's have a look.
People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are nervous have ants (蚂蚁) in their pants. Sometimes, people may get caught with their pants down. They are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say she wears the pants in the family.
Pants usually have pockets to hold things. Money that is likely to be spent quickly can burn a hole in your pocket. Sometimes you need a belt to hold up your pants. If you have less money than usual, you may have to tighten your belt.
I always praise people who can save their money and not spend too much. I really take my hat off to them. Yet, when it comes to my own money, I spend it at the drop of a hat, which means I instantly spend it.
Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are too big for their boots think they are more important than they really are. I dislike such people. My father is an important person. He runs a big company. He wears a suit and tie, and a shirt with sleeves (衣袖) that cover his arms. Some people who do not know him well think he is too serious and never shows his feelings openly. But I know that my father wears his heart on his sleeve.
1.Which of the following expressions can show someone is nervous
A.Get caught with one's pants down. B.Have ants in one's pants.
C.Wear the pants in the family. D.Burn a hole in one's pocket.
2.If we say someone has to tighten his belt, we probably mean he ________.
A.has done something wrong B.used to live a rich life
C.has put on the wrong pants D.is short of money
3.Someone who spends his money at the drop of a hat most probably ________.
A.doesn't save money B.earns much money
C.never wastes his money D.spends more than he earns
4.We can use the expression “wear one's heart on one's sleeve” to describe someone who _____.
A.gets angry easily B.looks very serious
C.shows his feelings openly D.often wears a suit and tie

My six-year-old granddaughter stared at me as if she was seeing me for the first time. “Grandma, you are an antique (古董),” she said. “You are old. Antiques are old. You are my antique.”
I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there. I took out the Webster’s Dictionary and read the definition to Jenny. I explained, “An antique is not only old, it’s an object existing since or belonging to earlier times...a work of art... a piece of furniture. Antiques are treasured,” I told Jenny as I put away the dictionary. “They have to be handled carefully because they sometimes are very valuable. In order to qualify as an antique, the object has to be at least 100 years old.”
“I’m only 67,” I reminded Jenny.
We looked around the house for other antiques, besides me. There was a desk that was handed down from Rone aunt to another and finally to our family. “It’s very old,” I told Jenny. “I try to keep it polished and I show it off whenever I can. You do that with antiques."
There was a picture on the wall bought at a garage sale. It was dated 1867. “Now that’s an antique,” I said with pride. “Over 100 years old.” Of course it was marked up and scratched (刮坏) and not in very good condition. “Sometimes age does that,” I told Jenny. “But the marks are good marks. They show living, or being around. That’s something to display with pride. In fact, sometimes, the more an object shows age, the more valuable it can become.” I believed this was important for my own self-worth.
Our tour of antiques continued. There was a vase on the floor. It had been in my house for a long time. I was not certain where it came from but I didn’t buy it new. One thing about antiques, I explained to Jenny, was that they usually had a story. They’d been in one home and then another, handed down from one family to another, traveling all over the place. They’d lasted through years and years. They could have been thrown away, or ignored, or destroyed, or lost. But instead, they survived.
For a moment, Jenny looked thoughtful. “l don’t have any antiques but you,” she said. Then her face brightened,“Could I take you to school for show and tell ”
“Only if I fit into your backpack,” I answered. And then Jenny’s antique lifted her up and embraced her in a hug that would last through the years.
5. Why did Grandma read the definition of “antique” to Jenny
A. To change Jenny’s shallow understanding of antiques.
B. To list all the important characteristics of antiques.
C. To express her disappointment at being called “antique”.
D. To tell Jenny the importance of protecting antiques.
6. Which of the following information did grandma express to Jenny
A. The desk reminded her of her dear relatives.
B. The marks on the picture showed its age and value.
C. There was usually a sad story behind each antique.
D. She planned to buy a new vase to replace the old one.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Jenny had a strong desire for grandma’s love.
B. Jenny was too young to know grandma’s humor.
C. Grandma had a deep long-lasting love for Jenny.
D. Grandma was too old to lift Jenny up.
8. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Grandma’s Antique B. A Story of Antiques
C. A Tour of Antiques D. Jenny’s Antique
【答案】5-8 A B C D

八.(15分)假定你是李华,最近,你在英语学习上遇到一些困难。请给你的英国朋友Alex 写一封邮件,向他求助。 内容包括:
1. 你的困难;
2. 寻求帮助。
注意:
1. 词数80左右;
2. 可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。
Dear Alex,
Due to my slow progress in English learning, I’m anxiously in urgent need of your guidance.
What bothers/troubles me most is my inefficiency and lack of motivation in memorizing words.
Due to the limited vocabulary, I always find myself stumped by the choice of idiomatic and accurate expressions in writing. Additionally, when I do listening exercise, the unfamiliar words add to my difficulty following the dialogues, thus making it impossible for me to get an ideal result in the exams.
I would appreciate it if you could give me some suggestions.
Yours,
