On March 14 in 2018, one of science's brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.
Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He came up with the theory that the universe began with the Big Bang and will end in black holes.
His theory became the important base for a lot of later research. He also wrote books to help common people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time (《时间简史》), which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world, according to CNN.
Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone who had a strong will and positive attitude.
When Hawking was 21, he was told that he had a serious illness that stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and "speak" using a computerized voice. But this didn't stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. "If one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be psychologically disabled as well." he once said.
Hawking travelled around the world to attend science meeting, visiting every continent, including Antarctica. He was also a fan of popular culture and appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory.
He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon. When he was 65, he took part in a zero-gravity flight to experience weightlessness. He hoped to travel into space one day.

Chinese athletes did a great job at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, winning 88 medals in total. But did you know that there are many cool technologies — even space technologies — behind their success
Quan Hongchan, a 14-year-old diving darling who won the gold, said an AI training system helped her train. Developed by Baidu, the system analyzes(分析) a diver’s body posture from the diving board until he or she enters the water. A dive can last less than two seconds. But the AI can catch many important details, such as the diver’s starting height, entry speed and angle. These data are sent to coaches right away.
Before setting out for Tokyo, some Chinese athletes visited the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics(中国航天空气动力技术研究院). The technologies there are normally used to develop rockets and missiles. But they can also help rowers, swimmers and cyclists.
“For example, rowers in the women’s quadruple sculls(四人双桨赛艇) came to my lab and used a wind tunnel to do experiments.” said Jia Yi from the academy. The tunnel can make winds with different speeds. “They measured the air drag(空气阻力) on their bodies. The data helped them change their movement and redesign their sport suits.”
But there’s even more. The national table tennis team has a popular “coach” called Pongbot. It’s a robot that can make difficult shots and never gets tired. Su Bingtian, the first Chinese sprinter to reach the Olympic 100-meter final, uses high-speed cameras to record his training. “The use of technology will help improve the nation’s overall competitiveness in sports,” said Huang Haiyan, a professor at the Shanghai University of Sport.

B.Athletes won’t make mistakes.
C.Coaches are no longer needed.
D.Athletes can become more competitive.

I often went fishing during the summer. Personally I am very fond of strawberries, but I have found that strangely, fish prefer worms. So when I went fishing, I didn’t put strawberries on the hook. Instead, I put a worm in front of the fish and said: “Wouldn’t you like some ”
Why not use the same common sense when fishing for people
Why talk about what we want That’s childish. Of course you’re interested in what you want. You always are. But no one else is. The rest of us are just like you; we are interested in what we want.
So the only way on earth to influence people is __________.
Remember that tomorrow when you are trying to get somebody to do something. If, for example, you don’t want your children to smoke, don’t lecture at them. Don’t talk about what you want, but show them that cigarettes may keep them from joining the basketball team or winning the hundred-metre race.
Once I rented a ballroom of a New York hotel for a series of my lectures which would last for 20 nights. I was a regular customer of this hotel and had held quite a few lectures there. But just before that year’s lectures were about to begin, I was suddenly informed that I should have to pay almost three times as much rent as usual. I was shocked and didn’t want to pay the increase, but what’s the use of talking to the hotel about what I want
Two days later, I sent the hotel manager a letter. In the letter, I drew two columns(栏), one for “Advantages” and the other for “Disadvantages”. Under the “Advantages” column, I wrote: “You have your ballroom free to rent for dances and meetings. That’s big business. From things like that you will make more money than if I tie your ballroom up for 20 nights during this season.
Under the “Disadvantages” column, I wrote: “First, instead of getting more money from me, I’m afraid you will earn nothing this time, because I can’t afford the rent you’re asking and I’m planning to hold my lectures it some other place. Second, as you know, my lectures attract groups of educated and cultured people to your hotel. For 20 nights! That’s good advertising for you, isn’t it. Of course you can pay$5000 advertising in the newspaper, but you’ll never bring as many people to look around in your hotel as I can by my lectures. That is worth a lot to you, right ”
And guess what, in the end, my rent increased only 50 percent, rather than 300 percent.

C.Everyone is interested in his or her own benefits.
D.In the writer’s opinion, getting people to visit the hotel is a better way of advertising than making advertisements in newspaper.

When Liberia was my home, they called it sweet. Sweet was the word I remembered most during the war. When I was five, my father, two sisters and I fled from Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia, and headed north on foot among panicked masses—a journey that ended in a village where we hid from flying bullets(子弹). Even dawn, my sisters and I joined my father and covered the pages of his small journal with words. My favorite word to write was “sweet”, one that had the power to numb the reality of our 6-month abandonment(抛弃) by peace and civilization.
Eventually, we were considered the lucky ones: part of the wave of refugees who left Liberia in 1990 to settle in America. My mother studied at Columbia University at the time, and we made our new home in her dormitory while awaiting her graduation. My father who left early in the mornings looked for work or news of a possible return to Liberia, only to return home with nothing to give us but new words to write in notebooks. He quickly found that the education he received in Liberia was not good enough for an engineering job in the United States. So he took whatever job he could find to make sure we always had food on the table—and books.
In 2011, I founded a children’s book publishing company One More Book. It provides children’s literature for the children of countries with low literacy(识字) rates are underrepresented cultures by publishing culturally relevant books that have something meaningful to say to them. My hope is to give children the peace I was given through the words of my father, by allowing them to see themselves in literature. I also think it is important to provide books about foreign countries for children in America, to increase the overall awareness of the world outside them.
I will never be able to give my father back the twenty years he spent working to educate us, or the home and life in Liberia he lost. I repay his sacrifice(牺牲) by honoring the education he fought for and offering my art to the world, and with words to live by.
39.What was the author’s family’s life like in Liberia
A.Sweet and peaceful.
B.Frightening but positive.
C.Comfortable but boring
D.Adventurous and exciting.
40.What is the meaning of the word “settle” in the second paragraph
A.live B.study C.work D.eat
41.What does the author want to express in the last paragraph
A.Her pity for her father’s suffering.
B.Her thanks to her father’s devotion.
C.Her pride in working for her people.
D.Her disappointment over the life in Liberia.

Last week, we discussed whether the high school entrance examination should include music and art.
Students have different opinions. Some students think that it offers us more chance to study music and art. Therefore, we will pay more attention to them. Meanwhile it can improve our art skills. However, a few students disagree with it. If music and art are in the examination, there will be more subjects to prepare for and it needs more time and energy. So students will feel more pressure.
In my opinion, music and art should be in the entrance examination for high school. As we all know, art and music play an important role in our life which can help us develop our interests and make our life more colorful. The most important thing is that we can relax ourselves by art and music in Grade 9.
