Long John Silver and another pirate were outside the fort holding a white flag. He wanted to make an agreement with Captain Smollett.
Silver said they intend to find the treasure with the map which Smollett might know. He also said, you can either join us if we find the treasure and we will leave you in a safe place on the journey home. If you refuse our conditions we will fight you to the end. Captain Smollett couldn’t refuse the conditions. Instead he gave some conditions to the pirates. This made Silver glared with anger at the captain. Before he stumbled down hill, and disappeared into the woods, he shouted he would break the wooden fort to pieces within an hour.
Then the captain gave his orders, “Doctor, take the door, but do not let them see you. Hunter, take the east side. Joyce, the west. Mr Trelawney, you’re the best shot—you and Gray take this north side with the five gun holes. Shoot when you see anyone. Hawkins, you and I will load the guns and help where we’re needed.”
We put out the fire, and put the ammunition, four extra guns, and our swords in the centre of the room. Joyce shot first, but pirates ran to the fort shouting loudly, while others fired at us from behind the trees. One bullet came through the doorway, breaking the doctor’s gun to pieces. The pirates climbed inside the fence and we fought against them, at last, three men fell, two men dead and the third man ran back woods. Four men were now inside the fort. They ran up the hill towards our house. They pulled the guns from the holes and then ran towards the door.
At last, we went outside and killed more of them with the swords.and the rest of the pirates ran away. When the fighting was over we went back inside. Two more of our men died in the attack and the captain was wounded. Now the numbers were now reduced from seven of us against nineteen pirates to four against nine.

This morning I went out to have breakfast in a small restaurant with a friend. It was a lovely day, but what wasn't so lovely was the woman who took our order. She spoke in a way made the customers unhappy. Her words sounded unfriendly and even kind of rude.
Working in service industry myself, I noticed it. When it came to my turn to get close and order my food, I thought to myself, "What can I do to make her day nice, to touch her to make her smile ” I was watching her and considering what to do.
Surely there must be something that I could compliment her on. It was her voice. She was well spoken and had clear voice. Maybe I would be able to do something to cheer her up.
So after she took my order and gave me the same unfriendly attitude(态度), I said to her and smiled, "I must say you have the most amazing voice, madam. It is so clear, well-spoken and sounds so professional." I told her honestly that she had one of those voices that would be perfect for announcements or radio.
Hearing my words, her whole face lighted up. She smiled—this was the first time I had seen her do so. As I left and looked back, I noticed that the customer behind me received a different kind of service, a happier one. And it was all because of what I did. It was something so simple!
There was a time when this kind of thing would have embarrassed me, or I'd have been shy and nervous to say such a thing. Now I must say the words. Why Because I have the power—the power to completely change someone's day by something as simple as a few kind words and being kind! And you have this power, too.

I was just out of college, only three days into a graduate (研究生)year in England, and I was pulling a heavy bag and suitcase(箱子)through the London Underground. I was also crying out of control.
The day before yesterday, my uncle told me never to speak to him, his wife, or my two cousins again.Earlier, I made a joke. I didn't mean to hurt my aunt's feelings, but it did.I spent the evening in an ugly blue telephone booth (电话亭). crying as I spoke to a family friend who lived in England.
When I left the phone booth, I went back to a silent house with three closed bedroom doors. In the morning, I heard everyone get up and leave for work and school. I wrote a note to say sorry and pulled my bags to the train station. When I got into London, I had to take the underground to Angel Station to get to my family friend's house.
I was familiar with the underground, but at the time, it was just endless white tiles(瓷砖).Coming to England seemed like a bad decision. Crying yet again, I tried to lift my suitcase up the stairs.
When I was trying hard to walk forward, there were hands. Each time I faced another group of steps,a hand would lift the suitcase. At the top of the steps, the hand would let go, and I'd pull the suitcase to the next group. And just as I wanted to try again, another hand would appear.
It happened several times. I never looked up, because I couldn't stop crying. Each hand looked different, and many different people helped me, without asking or saying anything. I couldn't look up. I wasn't able to say thank you.
I went on to have an amazing year studying in England, but that was the last time I saw or spoke to any of my uncle's family. Yet when I think about _________ in 2008, I remember those strangers' hands. They were there when I needed them, and even now, they help me out of the sadness of that memory. Do you listen to the songs that your parents like Chances are that you don’t. You probably think the music that they like is old and dull and that the songs on your playlist are much cooler.
But here is what scientists found recently: people’s music tastes change as they age, according to a study published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. So it’s likely that your own musical preference will follow a similar path to your parents’, whether you like it or not.
Researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, collected data(资料) from more than 250,000 people over the past 10 years. They noticed that as people age, their social circumstances(环境) change, and so does their music taste.
There are three musical periods that people pass through as they grow.
The first period comes in the teenage years, during which time people like punk and rock because teenagers want people to regard them as independent individuals(个体).
But as people move into early adulthood, their lifestyle changes—they get to know more people and want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they prefer pop and R&B, which are often played at parties where people hang out together and chat.
When middle age comes, people like to listen to jazz and classical. They also like country, folk, and blues.
“During this period of life, many people often feel tired because of their work and family, and there is a requirement for relaxing and emotive(动情的) music,” said Jason Rentfrow, a research member.
But you must be thinking: “Aren’t there old people who still love rock music ” Of course there are. But Rentfrow explained that their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. “We use music for different reasons,” he said, and at that age people may listen to remind themselves of their youths.
