2. Help students learn to sort out the relevant details, figure out the structure of the passage, and understand the stylistic characteristics of the argumentative essay.
3. Instruct students to get the spirit of football.

教学过程:
一、Pre-reading
1. Greeting

教师活动:播放一段关于足球的视频。
1. What's your feeling after watching the video
2. How much do you know about football
3.Can you guess what the signals represent in a football game
学生活动:Students work in pairs and discuss the answers.
They show great interest in this topic and talk warmly. Some girls are not quite familiar with what the signals represent in a football game. Most of the students show great interest in the topic.
While- reading
1. What's the topic sentence of each paragraph Divide the passage into three parts.
2. Choose the type of the passage.
3. What's the author's purpose in writing the passage
Try to find the topic sentence of each paragraph.
Suggested answers:
Para. 1: These days, football is one of the most popular sports in the world.
Para. 2: That football is such a simple game to play is perhaps the basis of its popularity. It is also a game that is very cheap to play.
Para. 3: Another factor behind football's global popularity is the creativity and excitement on the field.
Para. 4: What's more, football has become one of the best ways for people to communicate.
Para.5: I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.
[Summary] Lead-in (para.1); Body (paras. 2-4); Conclusion (para.5). The type of the passage is argumentation. The author's purpose in writing the passage is to explain why football is such a popular game.

1. Reason 1: It's such a simple and cheap game to play.
Reason 2: It's a game with creativity and excitement on the field.

2. That football is much, much more important than life and death might sound funny. But when thinking about the Earth, which is shaped like a football, you can understand the importance of football in people's mind.
