"That's funny! These fellows in the middle of the plate have died," Dr Alexander Fleming was talking to another doctor in a laboratory in London. He had been studying some germs(细菌) that he was growing on a plate. They were very dangerous germs because they caused different kinds of illnesses that could kill people. Dr Fleming found that a mould(霉菌) had floated in through the window landing on the plate. It had killed some of the germs it had touched.
"This certainly looks promising," Fleming said. "We must grow some of this mould to see if it will kill other germs."
He named the strange mould "penicillin". It proved to be a killer of many germs. Fifty mice were given deadly germs and then half of them were injected(注射) with penicillin. The twenty-five untreated mice died, but twenty-four of those that had been treated with penicillin lived. Dr Fleming wrote a report about what he had found out. Hardly anybody took any notice of it.
In 1938 Dr Howard Florey, an Australian working in London, read Dr Fleming's report and was very interested. He found that penicillin was effective in treating blood poisoning in human beings.
When World War Ⅱ broke out, it was not possible to make enough penicillin in England. Dr Florey went to America where he helped to have enormous amounts of this wonderful drug made. Throughout history, music spread among people of different cultures. In today's technological advanced society, however, people spread music online, sometimes without an artist's permission. This can lead to many problems, and music companies are now cracking down on this practice. Sharing music online without permission is theft.
Sharing music online prevents recording companies from making money from their efforts. They say that sharing music online has resulted in a huge drop in profits and sales over the past 10 years. People who find music for free online are not paying for CDs or every piece of music downloaded. To truly understand the influence of music piracy (盗版行为) on creators, one must understand how many people are involved in the recording process. For the sale of each album, profits must be shared among musicians, sound engineers, music producers, managers, advertisers, and the company selling the product. Many people believe sharing music only affects the recording artist, but the reality is that sharing hurts business for all companies involved.
There are many people who don't see the harm in sharing music online and even think they have the right to do it. One online blogger states that he originally paid for an entire CD and that he should be able to do with the material whatever he wants. While he may have legally paid for the music, he does not have the right to share it without permission, which means people like the blogger are thieves.
Although we don't spread music the same way we did before, there's no doubt that people around the world love to share music. However, Internet piracy will prevent musicians from continuing producing albums for fear of theft. Therefore, if people want to continue listening to their favorite artists, they need to buy their music so that artists will make enough profits to continue their music careers.
12.What does the underlined phrase "cracking down on" in Paragraph 1 most probably mean
A.Bringing up carefully. B.Speaking highly of.
C.Dealing seriously with. D.Destroying completely.
13.What can be learned from Paragraph 3
A.All bloggers are acting like thieves.
B.Once paying for a CD, you can treat it at will.
C.Many people have difficulty understanding CDs.
D.People who share music online without permission can be called thieves.
14.What can we learn from the passage
A.Sharing music online affects a lot of people.
B.Artists are taking action to protect their right.
C.Sharing music online increases sales of music CDs.
D.A person who buys a CD has the right to share it online with others.
15.What is the authors attitude toward music piracy
A.Indifferent. B.Favorable. C.Disapproval. D.Skeptical.

Once, a man was walking on a mountain when he found an incredible cave. Stored inside were all kinds of treasure and precious stones, and when he saw it, the man concealed the cave entrance and stayed there, guarding it.
From that day on, the man hid all his valuables in the cave, and to avoid anyone suspecting he was rich, he gave up his job, his home, and his friends. He constantly watched the approaches to his cave, wanting no one to find out about it. Fearing thieves, he guarded the cave the whole night through.
He was so dedicated to the cave that he hardly ate or drank. Before long, he fell ill. Many days passed, and he got thinner and sicker, losing all his strength, until he was on the point of dying. One day, when he could hardly move at all, he realized it was his greed that had brought him to this extreme end. He now understood that guarding his treasure had been of no use and no good whatsoever. Just before he died, he decided to share it with others.
He crawled into the cave to get a handful of jewels, but discovered, to his horror, that the cave was almost empty. All he could find was a small emerald, which had only a dull sheen to it. The man took it, and left the cave, intending to give it to the first person passing by. Soon a woman approached, and she accepted the emerald with great joy.
"Are you sure there's nothing else " replied the woman. The man shook his head, and pointed to the cave. But he could see that some treasure was still there; he saw some gold coins. "Take them with you," he said. The woman took both the emerald and the coins, and went away happily.
In a while, an old man came by and asked the man what he was doing there. "What bad luck! Just a moment ago I gave a woman the few riches left from the fabulous hoard of treasure I was guarding."
"Are you sure there is nothing left " the old man asked him.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

16、答案:
Dear Xiao Wang,
I have received and read your letter, in which you mentioned that you wanted to lose weight by dieting.
It is natural that young girls at your age hope to look beautiful. However, from my point of view, health is more important than beauty. For a student, studying is the first thing to consider while appearance is the second. So do not let others' opinions have an impact on your normal life. Besides, if you do want to lose weight, it is a good idea to do it by getting more exercise, changing unhealthy eating habits and having a good sleep. The most important thing is that you should keep a healthy state of mind, as it will help with your studies, and will also help you overcome difficulties in dieting.
I hope my advice will be helpful to you and I'm looking forward to your next letter.
Yours,
Li Hua
17、答案: "Are you sure there is nothing left " the old man asked him. The man led him into the cave. To his surprise, there was a box full of treasure and precious stones. "What why " the man was shocked. "Congratulations! Young man," the old man said. "You see, this is the Cave of treasure. You are the first to pass its test. Many others who discovered the cave ended up realizing there was nothing here."
"And why does this happen " said the man. "Why do things appear and disappear " This magic cave has as many riches as your own heart does. When people discover the cave, it will fill with the jewels if they share them with others. However, if they devote themselves to guarding the treasure, their hearts begin emptying. So does the cave. The only way to fill it is by filling your heart with all that is good, as you did. So it is better to share things than keep them to yourself."
