Dear Mike,
I’m Li Hua, a senior 2 student. I am writing to apply for the volunteer to receive the students from foreign countries. As a culture lover, I think it’s a duty for me to offer the best voluntary service to our foreign guests and meanwhile promote Chinese culture.
I do believe that I am qualified for the job. Firstly, I have extensive knowledge of our school’s history and culture. Besides, I have a good command of English, making it easy for me to communicate with foreign guests freely. More importantly, I have been involved in a good deal of reception work.
Thanks for your time and consideration, I would appreciate it if I could be chosen for this job.
Yours,
Li hua

A篇
22. B 细节理解 根据 “Hours: Normal office hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm but the person appointed will be required to work extra hours that are reasonably required to fulfil their duties.”

“when it comes to the holidays”是常见的一种表达,意思是“当谈及到”,主语为第三人称单数,时态为一般现在时,故填comes。
此处to help out those是opportunity的后置定语,故填to help。
这里有一个同级比较,as much as,故填as。
根据句意,此处是短语make a difference to,意思为“对…...

W: It’s up to you.
Text 9
W: I think America is a land of diversity.
M: I agree. America is a home to all. It is a combination of the world’s plentiful and varied races and cultures.
W: You are right. People coming to America from all over the globe brought their own cultures. Without its rich mixture of races and cultures. America would not be the nation that it is today.
M: I couldn’t agree more. America acts as a stage where different cultures not only coexist peacefully, but also have created a nation.
W: You’ve been in America for only two months, but you seem to know a lot about our country.
M: I’d learnt a lot about America before I came here. Every student in China must learn English these days. If you learn a language, you must learn about the culture behind it.
W: That’s right. I’m interested in Chinese culture. Maybe you can tell me something about it.
M: Sure, but not right now since I must go to the library. How about tomorrow
W: OK.
Text 10
Hello, everybody. Today I’d like to share with you something about John Audubon. John was born on April 26th, 1785. He spent much of his childhood in France, where he spent many hours each day outdoors painting pictures. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States. Well, actually, John began his life in the US as a businessman.
However, instead of taking care of his business, John was often off exploring the nature. At first, John spent his time hunting for fun. Then he found that the animals around were very beautiful, and he particularly enjoyed observing the birds he saw. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the birds and noticing
their different behaviors. Therefore, he painted the birds he observed a lot. In 1819, John realized that he didn’t have enough money to pay his bills. He was very upset that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family,
so he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his paintings. He discovered that he could earn some money while doing something he really enjoyed. We’re lucky now to have so many paintings of American birds by John Audubon.

There are summer blockbusters (大片), and then there’s “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The Paramount film, featuring Tom Cruise’s return to the skies as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell over 30 years after the hit 1986 original, won the domestic box office (国内票房) over the Labor Day weekend — bringing in $7.9 million for the four-day holiday.
That makes “Maverick” the only film in history to take the top spot on Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.
It’s just one of the film’s notable financial achievements. It crossed the $700 million mark in ticket sales, passing Marvel’s “Black Panther” to become the fifth highest-grossing film in North American history, and has made $1.4 billion worldwide since opening in May.
In another sign of “Maverick” staying power, the movie boasts a box office multiple (倍数) of roughly 5.5, which means its current domestic haul is 5.5 times that of its opening weekend total. That’s unheard of in contemporary Hollywood, as most big films have a multiple of around 2.5.
But “Maverick” fans kept coming back to theaters throughout the summer, so much so that the film made at least one million dollars a day for 75 straight days.
That type of financial longevity not only speaks to the film’s quality — it earned a 96% score on review site Rotten Tomatoes — but serves as an old-school success story at a time when theaters really needed one.
“There are not enough words to describe the importance of the box office performance of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ to the industry, having come at a time when naysayers (怀疑者) remained doubtful of the ability of the movie theater to draw audiences,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore (SCOR), told CNN Business. “Truly a watershed event.”
Hollywood simply does not produce summer blockbusters like this anymore.
While several recent movies have done quite well, like 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” and 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” such releases are typically “front-loaded,” meaning they open to huge numbers only on the first weekend.
24. How much has “Top Gun: Maverick” made in North America since opening in May
A. $1 million. B. $700 million. C. $7.9million. D. $1.4 billion.
25. What marks the great success of the film “Maverick”
A. Tom Cruise’s starring it. B. Hollywood’s blockbuster.
C. A popular old-school story. D. Amazing financial achievements.
26. What does the box office performance of “Top Gun: Maverick” suggest according to Paul
A. Movie theaters still have huge attraction to audiences.

One of the greatest sources of concern for Alaina Castillo has been the letter R.
Rolling Rs is at the heart of learning Spanish and one of its most challenging trills (颤音), especially for those unaccessible to the language regularly as a young child.
This is a lesson the 21-year-old singer spent years learning in and out of school. And it’s one that has paid off for Castillo, particularly on TikTok (抖音), which has made efforts to train its Spanish creators.
The Houston native is part of a flourishing Spanish and Latinx creator community that has attracted huge followings through videos that briefly translate cultural traditions and history for a young and captive TikTok audience.
“TikTok is a window to the world, and we’ve seen people across the worldwide Latinx and Spanish connect with one another on the platform through shared stories and experiences,” Kudzi Chikumbu, TikTok’s director of creator community, told CNN over email.
TikTok videos from Spanish creators are also getting consumed more than ever.
TikTok hashtags (主题标签) #Latino, #Latina, #Familia and #Comida, among others, grew in use by more than 185% since last year’s Spanish Heritage Month, according to data shared by TikTok spokesperson Cynthia Dew. The hashtags #Latino and #Latina have more than 62 billion views combined to date, Dew added.
Millions of those views belong to Castillo, who joined TikTok roughly a year ago to share original Spanish and English songs, as well as covers.
When she started making music, Castillo thought she’d be singing in English. That changed after her family encouraged her to write records in Spanish after learning the language in high school, Castillo told CNN.
“There’s a lot of different opinions when it comes to Latinx or people like me who are learning Spanish, so I made it my job to write records that bridge the gap between Spanish speakers and those who want to learn but were never taught,” she said.

Kwanzaa may be a festival celebrated by millions of African Americans and pan-Africans, but it has only been around for a few decades (十年). Introduced to the United States in 1966 as a ceremony to welcome the first harvest to the home, the festival, which takes place from December 26 to January 1, is a celebration of life, unity, family, and culture.
Featuring feasts, music and dance, and a devotion and recommitment to different principles (信条), the festival was created in the middle of the Black Freedom Movement, at a time when it was felt that cultural grounding was needed.
Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University in Long Beach, is responsible for bringing the festival to life. After the Watts violence in L.A., Dr. Karenga searched for ways to strengthen the African-American community. He paired the practices with traditions of several different harvest celebrations on the African continent, and although it is celebrated around the Christmas period, it perhaps has more similarities to Thanksgiving or the Yam Festival in Ghana and Nigeria.
There are five common sets of values that are central to the week-long activities: ingathering, reverence, commemoration, recommitment, and celebration. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, meaning first fruits in Kiswahili, a language spoken in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The first fruit celebrations appear in ancient and modern times in classical African civilizations.
These seven principles are known as Umoja, meaning unity; kujichagulia, self-determination; ujima, collective work, and responsibility; ujamaa, cooperative economics; nia, purpose; kuumba, creativity; and Imani, faith. There are seven candles used during the festival, and like, the Jewish Hanukkah, these candles are used to represent the principles.
On December 31, participants celebrate with a plentiful meal, often featuring good meals from various African countries.
The number of Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa has changed greatly over the years, and with as many as six million getting involved in the 1980s, Kwanzaa became a mainstream holiday. Now, however, numbers have paled, but it still remains an important cultural touchstone (试金石) for many African American communities.
32. What activity can be included during the celebration of Kwanzaa
A. Creating a piece of music. B. Having a plentiful meal.
C. Giving and receiving gifts. D. Enjoying an art exhibition.
33. How did Dr. Karenga bring Kwanzaa to life
A. He started the Watts violence in Los Angeles.
B. He created five common sets of values.
C. He found ways to practice African traditions.
D. He strengthened the unity of neighbors.
34. What can we infer about the celebration of Kwanzaa
A. Kwanzaa is a festival across the world.
B. Africans are considered important in the U.S..
C. Kwanzaa is an important cultural symbol.
D. Kwanzaa is less popular among young Africans.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text

They say that children learn languages the best. 36 . We asked some of the polyglots (通晓多种语言的人) in TED’s Open Translation Project to share their secrets to mastering a foreign language. Several basic principles are as follows.

Ditto for changing the language on your browser (浏览器). Or you can seek out more structured learning opportunities online. Dutch translator Els De Keyser recommends Duolinguo for its gamified (游戏化) approach to grammar, and Anki for memorizing vocabulary with its “intelligent” flashcards...
Make new friends. 40 — it will teach you to naturally express your thoughts, instead of mentally translating each sentence before you say it. Find native speakers near you. Listening to English radio programmes help me get used to how fast native speaker talk. I also repeat what I hear to help me to experience the feeling of language. Sometimes I even record my voice so I can listen to my pronunciation and compare it with the radio host! My biggest headache is why to be polite in English. It’s much easier to just say “Open the window!”, but in English that can sound really terribly. I have to think about who I’m talking
to and then decide whether to say it, “Open the window, please!” or “Could you open the window, please ” or even a long one “Would you mind open the window, please ”
