(1) _________________ new books to be added next month
Hello everyone! I’m very pleased to tell you that the library plans to add 200 new books next month. And I’m asking you, Book Club members, to recommend what books we should buy.
200
We have 30 new autobiographies and biographies. Most of them are about important historical figures. They aren’t very popular, though. Some of them have never been borrowed. We also bought 20 poetry collections last year. Like autobiographies and biographies, however, they aren’t very popular.
There are 20 new plays. Students enjoy reading plays, and they become more popular when students need to perform plays for class or club activities.

The library also added 30 short story collections and 300 novels. Of the 300 novels, one third are modern novels and the rest are classic novels.

The novels include more than 50 adventure stories and nearly 70 romances. There are about 60 historical novels and twice as many science fiction novels. Short story collections and novels have always enjoyed the greatest popularity among students. They are nearly always checked out.

Possible Conversation
A: Let's think of books for our school library. I think fantasy novels are more effective than other types to get
students interested in reading. I'd recommend popular
books like The Lord of the Rings.
B: Fantasy isn't something I'd choose, but if you ask me,
I'd pick the Harry Potter series. They got great reviews
and have been made into films too. But students should
be encouraged to read the books to enjoy the full story.
A: Yes. When a story is adapted into a film, things are often changed or left out. What types of books do you like
B: My favourite is non-fiction, like biographies. They're not so popular because people think they're boring. But they can inspire students to study harder and reach their goals. I'd suggest historical biographies such as Marie
Curie: A Life.
A: I believe contemporary biographies like Steve Jobs would be a better choice. He was a pioneer in compute technology, so students will be eager to find out more about his life.
B: Good idea. Reading contemporary biographies can develop students' interest in biographies and encourage students to read historical ones too.
A: That's right. Let's put our ideas together for the librarian.
Writing
1. Write a letter to the school librarian to recommend books. Use your ideas from Part C and the information in Parts A and B to help you.
Before this, go through the Planning your writing on Page 52 and design the format of the letter.
Learning about the structure
Begin by clearly stating the purpose of the letter.
Explain what types of books you want to recommend and the reasons.
End the letter by stating the result you wish to see.
Learning about the format
When you write a formal letter, you should begin with Dear Sir/Madam or Dear Mr / Miss/ Mrs/ Ms … and end with Yours faithfully or Yours sincerely.
