Whenever the word “hero” comes to me, I immediately think of three Hs: honorable, hardworking,
and happy. When I think more about this word, I picture someone who has accomplished good things for
people and tries to do the right thing. Hattie Elizabeth Alexander is one person whom I find to be very
heroic.
Hattie was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 5, 1901. During her time at college she earned her
Bachelor’s Degree in Bacteriology and Physiology. These were just the first steps towards what she was
finally going to be remembered for. After college Hattie attended Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and
received her medical degree.
After her education, she pursued her career, and after much time and hard work, she drastically
reduced the number of infants (幼儿) dying from meningitis (脑膜炎). Hattie was very devoted to her
work and helped at as many locations as she could. Spending plenty of time in the laboratory, Hattie
successfully developed a cure against the disease, which decreased the death rate to 20 percent. At the
same time, she was also a teacher working with Columbia University.
She was a caring lady interested in other people’s lives. When she was teaching at Columbia
University, other members would talk to her about students that were failing their classes, and somehow
Hattie could always find convincing reasons as to why they should not be driven away. Later, Hattie
became an instructor in Pediatrics at New York City’s Babies Hospital. After many honors, she became
the first woman president of the American Pediatric Society in 1965. This was her last major
achievement, for soon after, Hattie died of cancer on June 24, 1968.
Hattie is my hero because her positive attitude and strength helped her accomplish great things for
others. She gave them her strength by developing medicines against disease, which, by doing so, made
them stronger. This is what makes Hattie Elizabeth Alexander my hero.
28. According to the passage, Hattie Elizabeth Alexander __________.
A. cared a lot about other people’s private lives
B. received her Bachelor’s Degree in Johns Hopkins School
C. spent all her time in the laboratory developing cures for illnesses
D. always tried her best to help prevent students from dropping out of college

30. Hattie is considered to be a hero by the author because __________.
A. she was an honorable, hardworking and happy person

31. Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text
A. An Honorable Woman
B. My Hero —Hattie Elizabeth Alexander
C. A Woman Accomplishing Great Things
D. The First Woman President of the APS

Who needs friends According to most psychologists (心理学家) we all do, especially nowadays
when so many other aspects (方面) of modern life are changing. It seems that having friends keeps us
both healthy and happy.
The number of TV series about groups of friends shows just how important friendship is to us.
Psychologist Dorothy Rowe says that many of us now turn to our friends, instead of our families, for
advice, comfort and security (安全感). One woman named Rebecca she interviewed even told her that if
she had got to choose between her husband and her friend, she would choose her friend.
Since our friends mean so much to us, it is not surprising that the happiest marriages are also
friendships. “Once the romantic stage of a relationship has passed, it is friendship that holds people
together,” says Rowe. If the couple do not make some change, they will either get tired of each other and
break up or stay together and seek friendship with others.
But is friendship equally important to women and men According to author Rhonda Pritchard,
women are more likely than men to have close friends. “You tell a friend things that you’d never tell a
partner”, says one woman she interviewed. For men, friendship is usually based on doing things together
rather than the private conversations that are typical of women friend. Men share time and activities like
building a fence or a business, running, riding a bike, fishing or watching football, but they don’t often
share their feelings.
Although many women find their relationships with a husband or boyfriend is not enough, many
men say that their partner is their best friend. Even women who are very happily married are likely to
become very unhappy without a close friend and can even find the breakup of a close friend as painful as
the end of a marriage.
32. What did Rebecca think about friendship

A. they are encouraged by their partners.
B. they are not fairly treated by their partners
C. they don’t get what they need from their partners.
D. they think their friends are more romantic.
34. What is the main difference between men’s and women’s friendships
A. Women often do things together.
B. Women often talk about business with friends.
C. Men seldom talk about their feelings.
D. Men often talk to their friends about work and family.
35. When a friendship ends, some women may .
A. feel as upset as when a marriage ends.

When I was in Grade One, most of my classmates didn’t like to play with me because I was always
shy and silent. However, I always got high grades in both exams and activities. Gradually, I got the
respect of my classmates. And my teachers repeatedly praised me and asked me to assist my classmates
in their study. Besides, there were various competitions in my school and I was always chosen as the
representative of our class.
However, life is not always happy. There are times when we experience ups and downs. When I was
in Grade Three, a student named Vannilyn came to our school, and she was placed in the class next to
mine. Months passed and the result of the mid-term examination was released. I was still the No. 1 in my
class and I heard that Vannilyn was the No. 1 in her class. However, I just ignored her and in my thought,
I was still superior because I was a seasoned pupil.
There were times when I didn’t want to open my books to read and study for our next day’s lesson.
When I did my homework, I became careless and I didn’t even mind whether my handwriting looked
beautiful or not. What’s worse, I gradually became addicted to computer games. And because of that, my
teachers began to criticise me and what made me angry was that they always mentioned Vannilyn in front
of me!
I got annoyed every time my teachers compared me with Vannilyn. I was discouraged and no longer
followed their instructions. At the end of the first term, the principal’s assistant announced the final
examination result, and I still ranked No. 1. Therefore, I became prouder and told myself that I would
still be the best student even if I didn’t study hard.

Paragraph 1:
I was overconfident and didn’t pay much attention to my study. Believing that I would always be the best in studies, whether I studied hard or not, I continued to play computer games and did what I thought was fun and interesting. At the beginning of the second term, our school organised an English Spelling Competition, in which there were six participants, including Vannilyn and me. When looking at Vannilyn in the competition room, I suddenly felt not so confident of myself. Three minutes later, the competition started.
Paragraph 2:
Three days later, the result of the English Spelling competition was announced. I was shocked to know that I only took the third place, with Vannilyn being the first. I sat on my chair, tears rolling down my face. After calming down, I began to reflect on what I had been doing those days. How I regretted the days that had been wasted playing games but should have been spent on my studies. I know better the saying “Pride goes before a fall” through my own experience.
