The Monarch’s Journey
Background knowledge about monarch butterfly
The monarch butterfly, which lives in America, is probably one of the most well-known butterflies on earth. It has a famous name "Monarch Butterfly". It is widely said that the dazzling orange wings of this butterfly reminded European colonists who first arrived in North America of the Prince of Orange (later King William III of England), hence the name "Monarch Butterfly".
Background knowledge about animal migration
Animal migration is the relatively long-distance movement of individual animals, usually on a seasonal basis. It is the most common form of migration in ecology. It is found in all major animal groups, including birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and crustaceans. The trigger for the migration may be local climate, local availability of food, the season of the year or for mating reasons. To be counted as a true migration, and not just a local dispersal or irruption, the movement of the animals should be an annual or seasonal occurrence, such as birds migrating south for the winter; wildebeest migrating annually for seasonal grazing;
动物迁徙是个体动物相对长距离的移动,通常是季节性的。这是生态学中最常见的迁移形式。它存在于所有主要的动物类群中,包括鸟类、哺乳动物、鱼类、爬行动物、两栖动物、昆虫和甲壳动物。引发迁徙的原因可能是当地的气候、当地的食物供应、一年中的季节或交配的原因。怎样才算作一次真正的迁徙,而不仅仅是局部的扩散或入侵?动物的迁徙应该是一年一度或季节性的,比如鸟类迁徙到南方过冬;为季节性食草每年迁徙的角马等;
While-reading
Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the year. This annual movement is called migration. They migrate to find food, seek a partner, or in search of warmer weather. One of the most wonderful migrations in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly.
Every autumn, millions of these beautiful insects with fine black and orange wings begin a long and difficult journey. Somehow they manage to travel around 4,000 kilometres south and find their way to California or Mexico. However, until recently no one knew how they did this.
Main idea of Para1: Many ainmals migrate every year.
Main idea of Para 2: Every autumn monarchs begin to migrate.
A team of scientists led by Professor Eli Shlizerman at the University of Washington has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day. It uses its eyes to measure the position of the sun. These two pieces of information - the time of day and the point where the sun is in the sky - allow the butterfly to determine the way to go. Eventually, it manages to reach the places where it will spend the winter.
The solution to the mystery of the monarchs’ amazing ability comes at a time when it is in serious trouble. Its population has crashed by as much as 90 per cent in the last few years. Sadly, human activity is the main reason why the number of monarch butterflies is falling. In many of the places where the butterfly can be found, people are destroying the natural environment. They cut down trees and use chemicals that kill the plants that monarch caterpillars eat.
Main idea of Para 3: How the monarchs migrate.
Main idea of Para 4: Why the number of the monarchs reduces.
The research on the monarch's behaviour has however led to a greater awareness of this creature. People have been working together to record its migration and make sure that there are enough plants for it to feed on. If this works, there may come a time when the number of monarch butterflies increases once again. The more we know about this lovely creature, the greater the chance it will survive and keep its place in the natural world for a long time to come.
Main idea of Para 5: How to protect the monarchs.
1. Why do animals migrate at certain times of the year
They migrate to find food or a partner, or in search of warmer weather.
2. When do monarchs begin to migrate
They migrate in autumn every year.
3. Where do monarchs migrate
They manage to travel around 4,000 kilometers south.
4. How do mnarchs find their way to destination
They tell the time of day and use their eyes to measure the position of the sun. Then they use these two pieces of information to determine the way to go.
5. To what degree do the population of monarchs decrease
The population has crashed by 90 per cent in the last few years.
6. What is the main reason for monarch’s decrease
Huamn activity is the main reason. People are destroying natural environment which is suitable for monarchs.
7. What did people do resulting in monarchs’ number falling
They cut down trees and use chemicals that kill the plant on which caterpillars feed.
8. Why do the volunteers record the monarchs' migration
They want to make sure that there are enough plants for monarchs to feed on. Therefore they can protect the monarchs.
Choose where you are most likely to find the passage.
1 In a scientific research paper about the monarch butterfly's migration.
2 In a popular nature magazine introducing the monarch butterfly.
3 In a travel leaflet encouraging people to visit North America.
