Sharon, aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when you’re going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, some high school teachers will not care about things like how much homework you have already had in one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Frank, aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day of high school. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Eddie, aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would just be to relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier after you know it.
David, aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; some students may pick on (刁难)you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week, it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

High school was a hard time for me in the beginning because I had just moved to a small town and knew basically no one. I loved to play basketball but was afraid to go to the tryout (选拔赛)for the school’s team because I didn’t know anyone. One day all that changed when I missed the bus home and decided to shoot baskets in the school playground to kill time. The coach Mr. Colbath had been watching me make various baskets and was pretty impressed with my moves.
He came up to me and asked me who had taught me to play like that. I told him that my dad had taught me how to play basketball. He asked me if he would see me at the tryout on Friday, but I said no and told him why. He told me to have a try because I played very well and would maybe make some friends on the court. After thinking for a few minutes, I finally decided to have a try.
On the day of the tryout, the coach came, found me and helped me practice before the tryout. He helped me a lot and I did very well at the tryout and many members of the team were quite impressed. I did make the team and over the next few years the coach helped me both on and off the court. He helped me do my math which I had such a difficult time with and he even taught me how to live independently.

Every experience that American businesswoman Leigh-Ann Buchanan remembers has come from travel. Her early trips to the countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas were no small things — they assisted her to make connections with community organizations abroad, build leadership skills and find a greater purpose in her voluntary work. All of these experiences played an important part in her becoming a mentor(导师)to high school students.
She saw that many of her students from poor communities had never left the country. This not only shut them out from having life-changing experiences, but made them often miss out on college scholarships(奖学金)because their experiences couldn’t compete with those from higher-income backgrounds.
Then she saw a program founded by her friend in Ghana. It offered US students the opportunity to experience cultural exchanges abroad. Buchanan wondered why the students she mentored in Miami couldn’t have these life-changing experiences. So, she started the Nyah Project in 2014.
Since then, the project has provided money for 57 high-performing high school students throughout poor communities in Miami to have 10-day leadership trips. All 57 have gotten into colleges around the country, and over 90 percent have received full scholarships to college. Nyah fellows, the poor students helped by the Nyah Project, have traveled to countries including Indonesia, Namibia, Costa Rica and South Africa.
The trips bring cultural exchange opportunities ’ like learning about traditional Balinese dance in Indonesia and teaching younger students in Namibia. Kemoni Alexander, who is studying at Ohio Wesleyan University, was a Nyah fellow in 2017, and traveled to Namibia and South Africa for the first time out of the country.
“The neighborhood that I grew up in wasn’t adequately resourced and my schools were short of money,” Alexander said. “I could hardly believe that I was able to have that opportunity because other people saw that potential(潜力)in me and believed in me.”
12. What does the underlined word “assisted” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Required. B. Helped.
C. Trained. D. Reminded.
13. Why did Buchanan set up the Nyah Project
A. To offer students scholarships.
B. To share her travel experiences.
C. To support her friend’s program.
D. To provide chances for poor students.
14. How do the students benefit from the Nyah Project
A. They are sure to be mentors in the future.
B. They can enjoy traveling worldwide for free.
C. They can do cultural exchanges on trips.
D. They can all receive full scholarships to college.
15. What can we infer from Alexander’s words
A. She was thankful for the opportunity.
B. She was more confident about her ability.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语 续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Mean while, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B- U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do ” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I'm a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”
Paragraph 1:
Slowly, Peter raised his hand.
