Charvi Goyal is a high school student from Dallas, Texas, who helps out other classmates by tutoring them between classes. A tutor is someone who teaches one person or a very small group of students.
When Goyal's high school moved online last spring because of COVID-19, she decided to also take her teaching online. The 17-year-old junior and three of her fellow students created TutorScope, a program that offers free tutoring services to other children, including younger ones. It started with a small number of tutors who helped young people in their city. But it has grown into a group of 22 tutors from Texas, Arizona and Ohio. They have helped more than 300 students, some from as far away as South Korea.
TutorScope aims to give the one-on-one help that teachers have traditionally given while walking around their classrooms. But now, many teachers cannot provide that one-on-one support because they lack time or have issues with technology.
Sarah Newman said her children, 7-year-old twins, have had helpful TutorScope experiences. The service has freed up her and her 17-year-old son in pay attention to their work. "With these tutors, I realize they have time,“ she said, “I think they are very patient with these younger kids, which I do not even have as a mother. I have patience in other things, but I don’t have patience for teaching.
What makes the TutorScope effort special is the connection between the teenage volunteers and the other students they are helping. Although the pandemic has forced many students to look inward, Goyal said that working with others on a big project has permitted her to look outward. “My confidence level has increased,” Goyal said. She added that she has made friends with other students from her school. She said one of the best things about running a growing non-profit is that it does help with the boredom of being stuck at home.
24.What did Goyal do last spring
A. She helped her classmates at school. B. She got active in fighting COVID-19.
C. She offered online classes to students. D. She went to South Korea for help.
25. What’s the purpose of TutorScope
A. To give online help. B. To make profits. C. To make friends. D. To choose volunteers.
26. What’s Sarah Newman’s attitude towards the program
A. Favorable. B. Tolerant. C. Skeptical. D. Critical.
27. What can we learn from Goyal’s success
A. Putting the cart before the horse. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. No man can do two things at once. D. Helping others will benefit oneself.
C
Not sleeping enough or getting a bad night’s sleep over and over makes it hard to control your appetite. And that sets you up for all sorts of health problems, including obesity(肥胖) , heart disease and high blood pressure.
The link between poor sleep and a greater body mass index(BMI) has been shown in study after study, but researchers typically relied on the memories of the participants to record how well they slept.
Sleep apps on fitness trackers, smartphones and watches have changed all that. In a new study researchers tracked sleep quality for 120,000 people for up to two years.
The results showed sleep durations(持续时间) and patterns are highly variable between peo- ple. Despite that, the study found people with BMIs of 30 or above-which is considered obese by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-had slightly shorter sleep durations and more variable sleep patterns.
It didn’t take much less sleep to see the effect. People with BMIs over 30 only slept about 15 minutes less than those less weighty people.
There were some limitations to the study, naps(午睡) were not included, other health condi-tions could not be factored in, and people who use wearable tracking devices are typically younger, healthier and from a higher economic status than those who do not wear trackers.
“These are quite pricey devices, and they are not approved by the US Food and Drug Admin-istration. The results would need to be validated(确认) by the appropriate FDA-approved devices, and because the study is likely on younger people who are more economically well off ,it needs further study whether that really applies to older folks with poor sleep.” said Dasgupta , the associate program director.
However, Dasgupta added, a major plus for the study is that it did monitor people for over two years, and the results corroborated previous research and were “not surprising.”
While we cannot determine the direction of association from our study result, these findings provide further support to the idea that sleep patterns are associated with weight management and overall health.
28. How does the new study differ from previous studies
A. It lasts the longest time in history.
B. It uses apps to record participants’ sleep.
C. It specially improves participants’ sleep quality.
D. It relied on participants’ memory to record data.
29. What is Dasgupta’s attitude toward the new finding
A. Doubtful B. Shocked C. Cautious D. Dissatisfied
30. What does the underlined word “corroborated” probably mean in Paragraph 8
A. limit B. correct C. confirm D. combine
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Sleep Quality Varies from Person to Person
B. Sleep Apps Are Widely Used to Monitor Sleep
C. Young People Are Paying More Attention to Obesity
D. Lack of Sleep May Be Possibly Connected with Obesity
D
Buying furniture is easier than ever. You can even order a new table and chairs online with-out ever leaving home. But did you ever think about how furniture is made The process begins with trees but now researchers have found a better way: growing it in a lab instead of a forest. In- stead of cutting down trees and adding to deforestation(砍伐森林), Velásquez García said, “If you want a table, then you should just grow a table.”
The research group found a way to actually grow plant tissue-wood and fiber-in a lab that is similar to the way cultured meat is grown. While there is still a long way to actually grow a ta-ble, the team was able to grow structures from cells from zinnia(百日草) leaves.
Making furniture and other items from biomaterials could eliminate cutting down trees in forests. “The way we get these materials hasn’t changed in centuries and is very inefficient,” said Velásquez Garcia. “This is a real chance to avoid all that inefficiency(效率低).”
There are other benefits to using lab wood too. Lab grown wood can be handled to take on any shape-like 3D printing- so it may be possible to build a table without glue or screwing(用螺丝固定) parts together.
Beckwith, a mechanical engineering PhD student, was inspired by a visit to a farm to try to make land-use more efficient and environmentally sound. “That got me thinking: Can we be more strategic about what we’re getting out of our process Can we get more outputs for our in- puts ” she told MIT News. “I wanted to find a more efficient way to use land and resources so that we could let more farmlands remain wild, or to remain lower production but allow for greater bio-diversity.”
Today, the two largest uses of trees are to make wood products and paper. When new bio-materials become readily available, forests will lose their economic value and will be preserved for their environmental, health and recreational value. These researchers, like Velásquez García,are speaking for the trees.
32. What does the author think of growing furniture according to paragraph 1
A. It might have a bright future. B. It’ll cut down daily expense.
C. It turns out to be convenient. D. It’s as important as making furniture.
33. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 3 mean
A. risk. B. fancy. C. delay. D. remove.
34. What is the purpose of Beckwith’s growing furniture
A. To keep biodiversity. B. To make large profits.
C. To increase production. D. To use wild resources.
35. What’s the key to protecting forests
A. Caring more for the environment. B. Less use of wood products and paper.
C. Making effective forest laws. D. Wide use of new biomaterials.
第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
With the rapid development of science and technology, we don’t know how different our life will be in the future. 36 .
At first we think about human relationships. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet — even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. 37 . On the other hand, our relationship with people won’t be as important as they are today — we will feel a little lonely.
Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.38 . Traveling to other planets or to the moon will also be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.
We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted envi-ronment. But it isn’t true. 39 . And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in a better condition.
Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather confident about our future. 40 .
However, we are convinced of the following
B. We should be happy and believe good things will happen
C. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment
D. We can only imagine it
E. Spending holidays will also be completely different
F. It will be much faster and easier for us
G. Our environment will be more polluted

I was surprised when I received a short message from my father wishing me a happy birth- day.
I had expected to hear from my mother, my grandmother and my older relatives but never from my father. When I lay in bed, memories of my father flooded back.
When I was a little boy, I regarded my father as a hero able to do anything. However, things slowly began to change. The more I learned, the more I doubted what he said. The gap between us grew and, at last, I didn’t even like communicating with him.
My father, in my mind, had no interest in talking with me. Dinner was the only time we were together. He had no time to watch TV with me. He would tell me to ask my mother if I needed something. He even refused to answer my calls when I phoned from school. I got used to the changes. I thought that perhaps my father no longer loved me, so I hardly communicated with him and even was unwilling to contact him.
As time passed by, however, I began to wonder whether my behavior was right. And I began to be more and more upset. I had no idea how to get along well with him. One day, my mother told me that each time I called, my father was always listening beside her. Suddenly, I hated myself for my cold behavior toward him.
I tried thousands of times to apologize to my father. In the end, however, I was always too embarrassed about what I had done.

But that Saturday, I was so touched by his short message and decided to send a reply:
“Thank you, my dear father.” With a sincere heart, I finished the message and sent it out. My lips
curving into a smile, my heart pounding fiercely and my palms sweating, I waited for his response
nervously and anxiously. After a while, a message sent by my father said, “Dad loves you forever.
Come back whenever you like.” Seeing this, I felt a great sense of warmth welling up in my heart

Text 10
M: Good morning, Hillwood High. This is Principal Smith. This week promises to be a busy one for us, so pay attention to the posters outside your classroom. I'm happy to announce that selections for the talent show will be at the end of next week, on September 21 and 22. This is your chance to show off your music, comedy, or magic talent. You can sign up for one of the performance times this week in the dining hall. If you're chosen, Mr. West will invite you to practice on October 12. The talent show will be on Wednesday night, on October 18. And remember, this show usually helps us raise money for the senior class's gift to the school. Last year, we raised enough for a sofa for the reading area in our library. Speaking of the library, Reasor's Grocery will give a dollar for every book read — fifty cents to the school and fifty cents to the student. See Mrs. Gill in the library for more information. We've got a lot going on, don't we
