Two years ago I was very lonely and didn’t talk with anyone about my feelings. At the time I didn’t
have many friends. I wanted someone to share my experiences and secrets with. I wanted someone to
understand me. I started to imagine this friend. Often I imagined our conversations and what we would do,
but I didn’t give my imagination a face.
Some weeks later we started a new project in school and I was working with one of my schoolmates.
We had never worked together before but we got along well. After the project we started to spend some
time together in school. One day we decided to take a walk. Ever since that walk we’ve been best friends.
We listened and really understood each other.
I had wished for a best friend, but the universe gave me so much more. I have met one of my soul
mates (挚友). We can sense each other, and it just takes one look and we know what the other is thinking. I
didn’t think our friendship could grow much stronger. But now we have known each other for two years
and our friendship is growing all the time.
It hasn’t only been easy. We have gone through both easy and hard times. But I’m grateful for the
hard times, because they have forced me to grow and taught me a lot. My best friend has changed me. She
has made me believe in myself. And I am now focusing on achieving one of my biggest dreams. Without
her I wouldn’t even have realized what my biggest dream is.
I know there are soul mates out in the world for you. I am so grateful to have met one of mine. Believe
in them, and your paths will cross!

Suddenly one Sunday in August, the streets are filled with color. A group of bands, dancers and trick
cyclists makes its way slowly through the city. Every evening, crowds of people walk up to the top of the
Royal Mile, looking forward to a show of military music. On every shop window and noticeboard, posters
have appeared, advertising everything from poetry readings to children’s theater, art exhibitions to concerts.
It’s festival time.
From its beginning in 1947, the Edinburgh International Festival (the “official” festival) has become a
world-famous cultural event. The city turns into a huge arts centre, with its music, drama, dance and
exhibitions, all by artists of international fame (名声 ). Every year more than twenty nations perform to
audiences from all over the world in theaters, halls, schools, churches and the streets of the city. The
Edinburgh Military Tattoo adds to the choice of entertainment (娱乐 ), with its display of marching and
military bands in Edinburgh Castle.
The Festival Fringe (the “official” festival) is the biggest event of its kind in the world, with more than
900 shows to choose from and over 6,000 writers and performers taking part. It gives people a first-class
opportunity (机会) to see many works performed for the first time — several of which go on to successful
performances elsewhere.
The Film Festival gives fans an opportunity to widen their knowledge of films. And to show that there
is something for everyone, the Jazz Festival has become very popular in recent years. You can hear the
very best of music all over the city at this time.
There is no more exciting place to be than in Edinburgh at festival time!

What do you do with old, shabby (破旧的 ) books Many books are thrown away daily around the
world. But some rubbish collectors refuse to let this valuable resource go to waste. Instead they are giving
these books a second home and providing books for those who can’t afford them!
Rubbish collectors in Ankara, Turkey were unhappy to see so many books being thrown out as
rubbish. So in 2017, they decided to salvage them. At first the books were only provided for other city
workers and their families. But as the number of books grew, so did the number of users and contributors!
Today, the collection has over 6000 books. It is housed in an old, disused brick factory. The library lends
out books to community members as well as nearby schools. For the rubbish collectors, their next plan is to
turn a garbage truck into a library on wheels!
The movement to collect abandoned books doesn’t only happen in Turkey. Book lover Jose Alberto
Gutierrez has started a similar collection in his home in Bogota, Colombia. The school in his neighborhood
didn’t have its own library. Jose regularly (定期地) sends books to the school. He believes that education is
the key to helping people escape (逃离) poverty.
When Jose was young, he couldn’t attend school because his family was too poor. However, his
mother would read to him every night. That’s why, as a rubbish collector, he couldn't bear to let books die
in the rubbish bin. His book collection project started over 20 years ago with one book, a thrown-out
classic Russian novel. He kept bringing books home, and his house slowly turned into a community library
with over 25, 000 titles. He calls his place La Fuerza de las Palabras, which is Spanish for “The Strength
of Words”.
Through the efforts of these people, the power of words and knowledge can be shared by everyone.

How to make friends at a new school
Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be difficult, and you don't even know
where to go for your own classes. 36 However, if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of
those strangers into friends.
Be yourself.
37 If some people don't accept you, they're not the kind of friends you need. People often stay
together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sports may make
friends with those who also run or swim a lot.
38
Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say
something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you.
Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!
Believe in yourself.
A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your
head and make eye contact (目光接触) with other people. 39 Introduce yourself. Tell them your
name and where you're from.
Remember people's names.
You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. 40 Besides, ask them in a kind
way if they have a nickname (昵称). You'd be surprised at how often this might come in handy.
A. Be friendly to others.
B. Join in after-school activities you like.
C. Making new friends can be hard, too.
D. Never change who you are to try to fit in.
E. If you see someone you know, smile or say “Hi”.
F. People may become angry if you just begin by saying “Hey” each time.
G. Don't sit at the back of the classroom where other people don't notice you!
