Language points
1. When I was a tiny baby crying all night, my mom sang to me and stayed by my side. (教材P51 3a)
(1) tiny作形容词,意为“极小的;微小的”,可在句中作定语或表语。
That tiny baby is sleeping quietly.
如:那个小婴儿正在安静地睡觉。
Though she was tiny, she had a very loud voice.
虽然她很小,但声音很大。
(2) 此处cry作动词,意为“哭;叫喊”,cry for help呼救。
如:有一个小男孩在路边哭。
There is a little boy crying at the side of the road.

(1) 在本句中,crying all night作定语,修饰baby。在英语中,某些定语放在被修饰词之后,叫作“后置定语”。现在分词短语作定语一般后置。

(2) stay by one’s side意为“在某人身边”,相当于be on one’s side。

field作名词,此处意为“田野;场地”,还可意为“领域”。常用短语:in the field of 在......方面,在......领域。

(1)hug在此处作名词,意为“拥抱;搂抱”, give sb. a hug意为“给某人一个拥抱”。
When Jim got home, his daughter ran to him and gave him a hug.
如:吉姆到家后,他的女儿跑过来拥抱他。
(2)hug还可作动词,意为“拥抱;搂抱”。其过去式和过去分词都是hugged;现在分词为hugging。
He hurried out of the station and hugged his waiting daughter.

(1)awful作形容词,意为“很坏的;讨厌的”。

(2)awfully作副词,意为“非常,极其”,相当于terribly。
It’s awfully nice of you to come all this way to see me.
如:你大老远来看我真是太好了。
5. I regret talking back, not listening to Mom.(教材P51 3a)
(1)regret在此处作动词,意为“感到遗憾;懊悔”。其后通常如:接名词、代词、从句、动词-ing形式或动词不定式作宾语。
The driver regretted his carelessness in driving and went to the hospital to say sorry to his passengers.
司机对自己开车时的粗心感到后悔,并去医院向乘客表示歉意。
(2) regret还可作名词,意为“懊悔;后悔”。
I have no regrets about having become a teacher.
如:我对成为一名教师毫不后悔。
易混辨析:regret doing sth.与regret to do sth.
regret doing sth. 表示“后悔做了某事”(已做)。
I regretted missing a good chance.
regret to do sth. 表示“很遗憾去做某事”(未做)。
I regret to tell you that I can’t attend the meeting.
