April 16, 1889: born in London, parents were entertainers
1899: father died, mother became sick, had to fend for himself, joined a stage group
1910: began working in stage shows and toured US
1912: was offered a movie contract in US, huge commercial successes
1917: set up his own studio, controlled all aspects of his films
1936: films very successful, his most successful one is Modern Times
