Unit 9 Human Biology
Lesson 2 Brain Power
Part one 听力一
Teaching Aims
By the end of this section, students are able to:
1. Predict listening content based on life experience.
2. Get basic brain information by listening.
3. Identify formal and informal talks.
Activate and share
Look at pictures about the brain and answer the questions:
What is it
How much do you know about it
What functions does it perform in human body
How much does it weigh
....
Watch a video and Ss discuss in group and Ss share with each other.
For example : Why do we need to reduce stress
How can we improve the brain power
Listen for understanding Before listening, read the statements and write T (true) or F(false) ( P 56 Ex.2)
1.The brain consists of only white matter.( )
2.The brain weighs just over a kilo.( )
3.The brain contains about one billion cells.( )
4.The brain uses 10% of the body's energy.( )
5.The brain sends messages in the same way as a computer works. ( )
6.There are more possible connections in your brain, then there are atoms in the universe.( )

Listen for the second plete information about the brain (P. 56 Ex.4)
What matter does it consist of? Gray and white matter.
How much does it weigh
How much body’s energy does it use?
How many cells does it contain
How are messages sent?
What have we learned about the brand in the last ten years?

The brain cells make up nerve cells, which are connected by electrical impulses. The brain sends messages using electrical impulses.
Listen for the second plete information about the brain (P. 56 Ex.4)
What have we learned about the brand in the last ten years?
There are different areas in the brain, which are responsible for different functions. We now know which parts of the brain are related to different parts of our body and feelings from them. The brain also has different areas for different kinds of thinking. you have one area for your first language and another area for a foreign language that you learn when you are older.
Complete the summary with the words from the lecture (P.37 Ex.4)
The brain consists of gray and white matter. It uses 20% of the body's energy. It contains over one hundred billion cells which make up nerve cells. These nerve cells are connected by electrical impulses. There are more possible connections in one brain than there are atoms in the universe.Scientists have mapped different areas of the brain that are responsible for different functions. There are also different areas for different types of thinking such as learning your own language and learning a foreign language.
Get to know the style of the lecture. Tell whether it is formal or informal talk and how we know that.
Find evidences:
Right, the topic of today's lecture is "The Brain".
Well, the brain is an absolutely amazing organ.
...just imagine that, Amazing, isn't it
So, what do we know about this organ ....
Incredible, isn't it
Interesting, isn't it
Makes a normal computer looks simple, doesn't it
The listening is a(n) _________ talk.
A . formal B. informal

The teaching Aims
By the end of this section, students are able to:
1. Learn how to improve the brain power by listening.
2. Learn how to use expressions to ask for and give advice .
3.Get more ways to improve your brain through online resources and show them in class .
Activate and share :
T says to the Ss :Irene ,aged 55 years , is beginning to learn Japanese. She is wondering what can be done to improve her memory.
Would you please tell her some ways to improve her brain power.
1. Listen for the first time and try to figure out the main idea of the listening .
It is about three students asking for ways to increase the brain power.
2.Listen for the second time. And figure out the ways to solve the problems. (P.57 Ex.6)
Listening
What problem do they have What can they do

Bella:
Do exercise that is good for the heart, such as walking and running
Memory isn't as good as it used to be, so do brain exercises really work
Exams are coming up. So he wonders if there are certain foods that are good for the brain.
Is there any particular kind of exercise that can improve the health of her brain?
Challenge their brain with learning new things they are not good at.
Cut down on junk food, increase the intake of Omega-3 fats
Asking for advice
Should I try them
What's your advice, Professor Kim
So what kinds of activities do you suggest?

Giving Advice
You could try learning a new language....
One thing you can do is to cut down on junk food.
It might also be a good idea to increase your intake of ...
I advise you to do exercise that is good for your heart.
Listen again. Complete the Talk Builder in activity 7.
Asking for and giving advice
Get more ways to improve your brain through online resources and show them in class .
More ways to improve your brain.
Drive your brain cells
Exercise your mind
Ask more why
Lose weight
Make a guessing game
Improve the skills you have done
Be a thinker, not an alcoholic
Write for reading
Build trust in the brain
Thank you
