第二部分 阅读 (共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题; 每小题2. 5分,满分37. 5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Recently, a woman who lives in a small apartment in San Francisco asked me a question. She wanted to know how to prepare for a big earthquake. In fact, it's quite necessary for people in San Francisco to do that. Since she lives in an apartment, she cannot store water in a backyard or place a rain collection system. Here is my answer to her.
Firstly, you should store water and food. Storing water is actually very easy. A gallon per day is enough for you to drink. You can buy one of those 5-gallon spring water containers and put it in the kitchen. Check the expiration date(保质期), and get some new water when needed. Food isn't that hard, either. Get a few cans of soup, some canned fruit, and canned chickpeas or beans. Make sure they all can be eaten without heating. This will cost less than MYM20 and take up very little space in your kitchen. Prepare a cheap can-opener, tape(用胶带粘贴) it to the can, and forget about it.
Secondly, first aid is going to let you stay out of limited medical facilities(装备), allowing you to avoid getting truly injured. In a big disaster, you'll probably get hurt. Being able to clean and protect a skin wound is important. The Red Cross first-aid kit is cheap ($16) and small, and contains what you need.
Finally, information is almost as important as the other two. You really need a small radio to know what is going on around you. There are going to be shelters, first-aid facilities, and safe and unsafe areas. You need a radio to know where they are. The National Guard will be somewhere helping out, and you need to learn where they are. The network will probably be down, so you can't count on that.
Therefore, you just need $60 and about 30 minutes of shopping, and then you can survive for 3 days without any help.
21. What was the woman's problem
A. She was afraid of big earthquakes.
B. She didn't have a backyard to store her things.
C. She didn't know how to prepare for a big earthquake.
D. She didn't know how to set up a rain collection system.
22. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 means the woman should .

A. It's not an easy thing to do. B. It can't be used to save a life.
C. It's important in an earthquake. D. It's too limited for people in a disaster.
B
Earthquakes happen without warning (前兆) . They can happen any time of a day, at any point during the year. But don't worry because most are so weak that they cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people. However, it's important to know what to do when an earthquake is happening.
Do not go outside. You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings. If you are outside, stay away from buildings and power lines (输电线) .
Stay under a desk, table, or other strong furniture. Hold on to it. Or stay in a corner of the building. Cover your face and head with your arms and cover your mouth with a towel or clothing. Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.
Keep away from windows, pictures or advertisements on the wall or the building, and anything else that could fall and hurt you. Most people get injured by falling things during an earthquake, not by the shaking itself.
Also keep away from a fire. You could fall down and burn yourself in the fire.
If you are driving when an earthquake happens, stop the car if it's safe. Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops, and don't drive near bridges. Try not to stop by power lines or trees. These could fall and hurt you.

On January 6, firefighters lifted Marcus'coffin (棺材) —covered with an American flag—onto a yellow fire engine. 第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I suppose it wasn't easy for either of us in the beginning. Welcoming an out of control fifteen year old boy into one's home would be difficult for any step mom. Walking into a new family in a different house in a strange city could get any teenager into trouble. It did for me, but Judy placed her anxiety aside and accepted me. She saw the good in me, even if it lay buried under years of pain and distrust.
It certainly helped that three great kids came with her. The two boys and I hit it off right away. They were athletes even at a young age, and we played indoors and outdoors every day. The older daughter pecked (啄) at me whenever she could, but I fought back. We all grew close over time.
Judy was a busy working mom, but she always made some time to inquire (询问) about her kids' worlds. I don't think it was boring conversation either. Judy always showed great interest.
She and my dad met at the end of two troubled marriages. They loved each other enough to throw everything into a bag and walked ahead with life. They began as two adults with three kids. They bought a bigger house, and began a new life.
I remember one day talking with father's sister on the phone. We got on to the subject of my mom and dad's divorce, and I mentioned how sad I felt for my mom.“But isn't it wonderful that your dad has got happiness ” she said. I'd never thought about it like that before. From then on, I saw Judy in a new way—as a companion for my dad. I began to love her as my stepmother.
I graduated from community college and wandered around here and there, not really achieving anything. I was sure Judy and Dad had a few conversations about me, but I thought Judy always saw my spark (闪光点) . Judy always looked at the good in everyone.
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:
Everyone threw up their hands but Judy still held onto a hope that maybe I'd finally achieve something. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

To make us students know about how to protect ourselves during an earthquake, our school organized an earthquake emergency evacuation drill today.
Before the drill started, our teachers gave us some basic and useful instructions on what to do during an earthquake. When the alarm rang, students left the teaching building in order. Within a minute, all of the students gathered on the playground, for which we were praised by our headmaster.
This drill is really meaningful and helpful, from which we have learned some related skills in dealing with emergencies in an earthquake.

Paragraph 1:
Everyone threw up their hands but Judy still held onto a hope that maybe I'd finally achieve something. I could see it in her eyes, and through that beautiful smile, I could see true happiness and honest motherly pride. Judy bought kitty cats as Christmas presents, because she knew I loved cats. I was very grateful that she trusted me. Now I'm a university professor and an author of children's adventure novels.
Paragraph 2:
We held a family birthday party recently. I sat and talked with her grandson, a young man who lost his father a couple of years ago. He is facing challenges ahead of him, but with the right push, he might find his path. Judy sent me an e mail thanking me for spending time with him, but I recognized that I was just like that grandson many years ago. I think Judy sees the same good in him as she saw in me many years ago. I'm sure she'll never give him up either.
