The chasm(鸿沟)separating Garang Piol from his dream of attending Cape Town University, the top university of Africa, in 2018 was wide. The former soldier from the Republic of South Sudan needed money to pay tuition.
In the years after the war's ending in 2005,he had worked as an electrician in a school where he found a chance at education.Later,he worked for Atlanta's Carter Centre in South Sudan, helping root out Guinea worm disease. His salary paid for his living expenses and for his education at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Kenya, where he earned a degree in sustainable development.
David Stobbelaar was in charge of the Carter Centre in South Sudan in 2008 when Garang was assigned to his team.Stobbelaar says Garang impressed Carter Centre staff with his intelligence, organization and communication abilities. The two became good friends over years and Garang told Stobbelaar his experience of being a soldier.
When Stobbelaar was talking in 2015 to Dickstein Hughes,a friend who is a teacher, she was leading her 10th grade English class through a book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Soldier. “I was talking to David about some of my concerns and bringing my students closer to the humanity of the memoir, and he suggested that he could connect me with a former soldier,” she said.
Garang soon was answering questions via Internet from the students. His talk was so impactful that Dickstein Hughes continued contacting him for the next three years, became Garang's friend and came to know of his hopes of coming to Cape Town University for more schooling. Recommended by Dickstein Hughes, Garang was accepted at Cape Town, but the money became the crux. Thus Dickstein Hughes and her class started a GoFundMe account, went door to door and held fundraisers. “Life has challenged him time and time again, and Garang has proved himself time and time again.”Dickstein Hughes said.
Now Garang is one year into earning master's degrees at Cape Town in international development and public health. He is anxious to return home and recreate the process that changed him. “I hope to change the life of others-to help them know they have a future," Garang said.

For many people, catching a smell of freshly cut grass is a pleasant sign that warmer weather is here to stay. For the grass, however, this sent signals an entirely different story.
The smell we associate with freshly cut grass is actually a chemical SOS, one used by plants to beg nearby creatures to save them from attack. After all, when danger strikes-whether it's gardening equipment or a hungry caterpillar-plants can't lift their roots and run. They must fight where they stand. To protect themselves, plants employ a string of molecular(分子)responses. These chemical communications can be used to poison an enemy, warn surrounding plants of dangers or attract helpful insects to perform needed services.
Clearly, plants can communicate. But does that mean they can feel pain According to some researchers, plants release gases that are the equivalent of crying out in pain. Using a laser-powered microphone, researchers have picked up sound waves produced by plants releasing gases when cut or injured. Although not audible to the human ear, the secret voices of plants have revealed that cucumbers scream when they are sick, and flowers cry when their leaves are cut.
There's also evidence that plants can hear themselves being eaten. Researches show that plants understand and respond to chewing sounds made by caterpillars dining on them. As soon as the plants hear the noises, they respond with several defense mechanisms.
For some researchers, evidence of these complex communication systems-giving out noises via gas when in pain-signals that plants feel pain. Others argue that there cannot be pain without a brain to register the feeling. Still more scientists infer that plants can exhibit intelligent behaviour without possessing a brain or conscious awareness.
As they grow, plants can change their paths to avoid obstacles or reach for support with their tendrils(卷须).This activity comes from a complex biological network distributed through the plants' roots, leaves and stems. This network helps plants reproduce, grow and survive.
28.What does the smell of freshly cut grass signal for the grass
A.Warmer weather.
C.Being poisonous.
B.Crying for help.
D.The need of services.
29.How do plants express their pain

Drinking your daily cup of coffee may help to lower your risk of stroke(中风)and heart disease, according to a latest research.Researchers at the Heart and Vascular Centre,Budapest,Hungary have found that drinking up to three cups of coffee a day may help protect your cardiovascular(心血管的) system.
The team studied data from nearly 500,000 people registered in the UK Biobank with an average age of 56 and no signs of heart disease at the time of recruitment. They divided them into three categories according to their coffee drinking habits:non-drinkers,up to three-cup-a-day drinkers and more than three-cup-a-day drinkers.
Considering influencing factors such as age, sex, weight, height, physical activity, blood pressure, diabetes, socioeconomic status, and usual intake of alcohol, meat, tea, fruit and vegetables, they found that three-cup-a-day drinkers had a 12 per cent lower risk of death from all causes,a 17 per cent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and a 21 per cent lower risk of stroke.
“To our knowledge, this is the largest study to systematically assess the cardiovascular effects of regular coffee consumption in a population without diagnosed heart disease," said study author Dr Judit Simon.
To further investigate the effect, the researchers used data from more than 30,000 participants in the UK Biobank who had undergone MRI(核磁共振成像)scans to determine the structure and functioning capacity of their hearts.
Dr Judit Simon said,“The imaging analysis indicated that compared with participants who did not drink coffee regularly, daily coffee consumers had healthier sized and better functioning hearts. Our findings suggest that coffee consumption of up to three cups per day is associated with favourable cardiovascular outcomes. While further studies are needed to explain the underlying mechanisms, the observed benefits might be partly explained by positive changes in cardiac structure and function.”
32.What is the latest research mainly about
A.The risk of heart disease.
C.The cups of drinking coffee.
B.The ways to avoid stroke.
D.The benefits of drinking coffee.
33.Why does the author mention the influencing factors in Paragraph 3
A.To show the difficulty of the research.
B.To show the reliability of the findings.
C.To introduce the process of the research.
D.To introduce the limitation of the findings.
34.What do the two data analyses have in common
A.They have been accepted widely.
B.They oppose coffee consumption.
C.They find coffee's positive effects on people.
D.They focus on negative changes in people's hearts.
35.What is Dr Judit Simon's attitude to drinking coffee
A.Favourable.
B.Skeptical.
C.Tolerant.
D.Carefree.

As is well known, making art is good for your health. It can reduce stress and improve your spirit. But you don't have to be a full-time artist to get these benefits.36 And the more you do it, the better. Here are some tips to help you kick-start your creative art habit. Don’t require yourself to have great skills. In fact, there are no differences in health outcomes between those who are identified as experienced in art and those who aren't. 37
Figure out your mode of creative expression. There are many choices available: painting, cooking, baking, woodworking, sewing-the sky is the limit.38 Anything that sets off your creative mind is good for you. And don't feel like you have to stick to one thing. Mix it up-do whatever you're in the mood for.
39 Once you have your art materials, here comes the fun part. Let yourself get lost in the process and just play. It's the physical act of making art that causes those feelings of stress relief and positive spirit, not what you make. So, you don't even need to finish what you're making to feel those health benefits.
Think about making art like any healthy habit. Just as you make time to exercise and hang out with friends, you should make time for your artistic creation. You don't even need a few hours. Doing just 10 minutes of art each day can do wonders. 40 You could set up a corner table for your art supplies. If space is an issue, put them all in a container that's easily accessible.
A.Keep an open mind.
B.Improve yourself with regular practice.
C.Focus on the making and let go of expectations.
D. However, developing interest in art takes little time.
E. In addition to carving out time, carve out a physical space for art.
F.All you need to do is just to spare some time to make art in your daily life.
G.So no matter what your level is, you could feel all the good things that come with making art.

Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. He'd hiked the park near his home in Southern Califonia numerous times. But after exploring along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.
As the day faded into dusk, following several hours of aimless wandering, his concern turned to fear. The place was remote and rough. With no flashlight, only a little water and a power bar in his backpack, and less than ten per cent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour journey he'd planned.
Compean climbed to a spot, some 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal." SOS. My phone is going to die. I'm lost.” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was.
All Compean could do then was to wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast, and the winds were becoming stronger. Wearing little, Compean was chilled to the bone. He hugged himself into a tight ball, using his backpack to protect his bare legs. But he wouldn't sleep. After spotting two mountain lions and a bear, he spent the night on high alert, keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him in case an animal came close.
Sixty miles away in Ventura County, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a Tweet from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff's search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the message to the public, hoping someone might know the location.
Kuo,then 47,works in the tech industry, and he has an unusual hobby.“I have always loved looking for where photos are taken,” he says. When he saw the unclear image of Compean's legs surrounded by an endless landscape of rocks and plants,he instinctively pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. Since the Sheriff's Department said Compean's car was parked near Buckhom Campground, he soon narrowed his search to a possible location. The final step was comparing the original photo with the 3D images of that place from Google Earth.
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
