Every country has different everyday ways and cultural customs. To get to know American life, it pays to know certain habits most native—born Americans share.
Greetings
Americans shake hands firmly with each other when first introduced, or when they meet again, but rarely when they part (a more European custom). Social kissing, as a greeting, accompanied by a light body hug, is also sometimes acceptable between men and women who know each other well and among women. American men rarely hug each other or kiss on both cheeks.
Distance and Eye Contact
When two Americans are standing and talking to each other, they stay at least 16 inches away from each other, farther away than is customary in many other cultures. An American may feel threatened if you come too close, even if such a distance is perfectly ordinary in your own culture. Touching is not recommended, but making full eye contact at the first meeting stage is basic. Americans tend to warm up to people who smile, especially when the smile is accompanied by full eye contact.
Getting to the Point
When asking an American for something, especially when dealing with sales help in stores and markets, too much small talk is not required as in some other countries. A brief “excuse me” is usually enough to get the person’s attention, say, when asking for directions. Americans may feel threatened and become suspicious(起疑心的)if a stranger begins with a general “hello, how are you ” and does not get to the point directly. Americans do exchange humorous greetings among people they already know, but even then they are likely to get to the point relatively quickly.
21. Which of the following do American men hardly do when they meet

To raise money for restaurant workers who had to stay at home during COVID—19, two brothers, Aiden and Louis Ardine, decided to walk 3,200 miles across America.
Having just arrived on the sands of the Pacific Ocean, Aiden and Louis Ardine have now completed their five—month walk. They had hoped to raise $ 30,000 for some charities(慈善组织)that were helping restaurant workers waiting for lockdown(隔离)to end, but ended up making $ 70,000—which they gave away to the COCO Fund and the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation.
“This would not have been possible without the help of a huge community of people, whether people were donating or helping us guide our way across the United States.” said Aiden Ardine. “This was surely an adventure full of hope, and it proved people are born good and want to help their neighbors.”
Just like cross—country trips in this nation, their journey was characterized by amazing views, long roads, and helpful strangers: like a man who passed them in the extreme heat of summertime Iowa, before doubling back and giving them a cold drink; or a Nevada campground manager who let them stay for free.
In Utah they had what the naturalist John Muir would have described as an “interview” with a black bear. When rounding a corner in the path, they found themselves within a few feet of it.
When they reached San Francisco, their supporters were waiting for them on the beach. Afterwards they flew home along with their mom who had been there to meet them. After their adventurous stay away from home, we can only imagine she was really feeling proud of her sons.
24. Why did the two brothers collect money
A. To set up some charities.
B. To help end the lockdown.
C. To complete their five—month walk.
D. To help restaurant workers stuck at home.

Natural selection is the process(过程)by which one type of animal survives because of certain characters that make it more likely to live than others. The history of the peppered moth(灰蛾)is an example of the natural selection process.
In nineteenth—century England, certain types of peppered moths were able to live better in changeable environments. During that time period, great changes were happening in Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution was part of this change, and with it came air pollution. Natural selection often takes hundreds or even thousands of years to occur. For the peppered moth, this process happened comparatively quickly.
At the beginning of the Industrial Age, most peppered moths in England were light—colored and covered with black markings, although a few moths had dark—colored wings. Because the light—colored moths looked like the light—colored bark(树皮)on the trees, they could not be easily seen by birds that would eat them. The light—colored moths became easy for birds to see against the dark tree. Since the dark—colored moths now had the advantage, their numbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered moth went from being mostly light—colored to being mostly dark—colored.
In the twentieth century, the air cleared up, and the peppered moth population changed again. As tree bark lightened due to less soot(煤烟)in the air, light—colored moths once again had an advantage. Their numbers increased as soot levels fell. Depending on their environment, the coloration of the moths helped them to be “naturally selected” to survive.
28. What do we know about the peppered moth’s natural selection process
A. It is a general process of insect change.
B. It has nothing to do with the soot levels.
C. It shows bark can protect peppered moths.
D. It takes less time to complete this process than others.
29. What can be inferred from the third paragraph
A. The color of moths was unimportant.
B. Most of the bark was darkened with soot.
C. Peppered moths prefer dark—colored trees.
D. Birds are less able to recognize dark moths.
30. What helped the peppered moth survive natural selection
A. Their natural color. B. Their large population.
C. Their wide range of food. D. Their dark wings.
31. In which part of the website can we find this text
A. Technology. B. Air pollution.
C. Science fiction. D. Biological Science.

Smoking cigarettes has long been known to lead to health problems and oftentimes, death. With the invention of e—cigarettes or vape(电子烟)as it has come to be known, many were under the belief that a safe alternative(替换物)to traditional smoking was finally here.
Safer yes, but safe, not exactly. The process of vaping includes heating oil that is stored in a pipe through a battery. The fuel is then turned into a vapor(蒸汽)that is breathed in. Because what is breathed in is like water vapor, the theory was that this process was much healthier than smoking, but the real facts tell a different story.
The oil contains nicotine(尼古丁), which is bad, no matter how it is taken in. It is a chemical that causes an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. The oil also has many other harmful things that have not yet been studied. You have no idea what you are breathing in.
Studies have shown that even those who have taken up vaping to quit smoking often finally go back to smoking real cigarettes or they both smoke and vape. Besides, a vape or e—cigarette does not have health related warnings on the cigarette boxes.
A vape can blow up. While the probability of that happening is very small, there are an increasing number of cases that exist where the battery has become extremely hot and finally blew up. These accidents have caused serious burns to those who had these e—cigarettes in their pockets and even injury to their mouth, face and teeth for those who happen to be smoking.
A real safe alternative to smoking is, not smoking. E—cigarettes represent an unknown danger but a danger certainly. Extra caution should be taken if this is an activity you decide to choose. But if you want a healthy alternative to smoking… vaping and e—cigarettes simply aren’t it.
32. Why do people think that vape is safe
A. There is no nicotine in it. B. It doesn’t need to be lighted.
C. It has been proved harmless. D. One takes in vapor, not smoke.
33. What is the author’s opinion about nicotine
A. It can lift one’s spirits. B. It contains only in tobacco.
C. It is bad however you take it. D. It is harmless in small amounts.
34.What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Trying vaping. B. Staying healthy.
C. Quitting smoking. D. Smoking cigarettes.
35. What is this text mainly about
A. Ways to quit smoking. B. Disadvantages of vaping.
C. Alternative to smoking. D. Improvements to e—cigarettes.

Money were tight, so I was excited when a friend mentioned an online company that was trying to hire writers. On checking the requirements for the post, I knew this was the job for me.
Part of the application process involved writing a test article. I thought over the topic, spent several hours doing research, and produced my best possible effort.
One of the requirements involved the use of software that was new to me. The new software saved automatically as I worked, so that seemed perfect. That saved me from needing to hit “save” even now and then.
After completing the article, I checked it several dozen times. It had to be as near perfection as possible. When I could no longer improve it any more, I told the company that the post was ready for them to read and sent them a link.
A few days passed before the company contacted me. They had refused me. I couldn’t understand why. It must have been my article as, until that point, they seemed happy with everything else. They invited me to try again in ninety days, but there seemed little point in doing that. I had no idea what they didn’t like about my article.
Disappointed, I thanked them politely and wondered what else I could do to improve my income.
Next day, I received another e—mail from the company. They wanted me to post my article again. That seemed strange. What was the point of posting an article they’d already refused Following the advice of my friend, I opened my post once more to see if there were any overlooked problems.
I immediately noticed that an editor for the company had edited the article. She seemed to love the piece until she came to the last paragraph. It had too many typing errors.
Near the end, the text turned into three lines of “n”. Here and there, another letter appeared, and then the “n” continued. Over three lines. The word was hidden among dozens of “n”.
I was shocked. How could that have happened Something must have landed on the keyboard. But how had I not noticed it
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At that point, our very cute, extremely curious parrot, flew into the room and landed on my shoulder. I edited my piece carefully again.

第四部分 写作
第一节
Dear Vesalius,
I’m your classmate Li Hua. I’m writing to tell you something about the new environment you’re in.
It seems that you feel uncomfortable now because you’ve just entered a new environment. Maybe you still need some more time. And maybe you’re a little shy to communicate with others. I think that you can talk with students around you, and be brave to ask them questions that you don’t know. Besides, you can always turn to me whenever you need help. I’m sure that you will get used to this new place soon.
Best regards,
Li Hua
第二节
At that point, our very cute, extremely curious parrot, flew into the room and landed on my shoulder. He usually flew into my room and stood by me while I was working on my computer. Sometimes he would land on the keyboard. He soon learned that if he ran on the keys, little figures appeared on the screen. At some point while my important article was still open on my screen, I must have left the room. While I was away, he came out to play! He must have done a happy tap dance on the letter “n” and then flown away before I returned.
I edited my piece carefully again. This time I made sure it was perfect before closing the window. I wrote a cover e—mail containing a heartfelt apology and explained what I thought had happened. After I sent the letter, I wondered about my wisdom. It really did sound like the age—old excuse teachers hear: “The dog ate my homework!” However, it seemed to do the trick. A few days later, I signed my letter of acceptance to work with the company.

M: Hi, Christine. Will you come to my birthday party this Friday
W: I’m afraid I can’t. I will have to go to Maryland with my friends this Thursday to take part in a celebration of history on National History Day. I don’t think I’ll return this Friday.

W: You know what Foreign reporters carry the bag from Beijing 2008 Olympic Games all the way to Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

M: Emily, I like your sweater.
W: Thank you. I like it, too.
M: Is it new
W: Yes, it’s new to me! But in fact, it’s used. I bought it at a secondhand store last month.
M: Really It looks new.
W: It feels new and comfortable, too. But it’s much
cheaper than a new one.
M: I like to buy secondhand things, too. I bought a used fridge last summer. It works well, just like a new fridge.
W: Great! How about going to the secondhand store this Saturday
M: That sounds good. I need some books and a jacket.
Text 7
W: Are you all right, Kim You look terrible.
M: I’m fine. I just stayed up too late last night. I didn’t go to sleep until 2 a. m., and then I got up at 6 this morning.
W: Did you watch a football game again

W: You shouldn’t have stayed up so late before an exam.

W: Will you have an exam tomorrow
M: Yes, it’s math. But I’m not worried about it all. Physics is the real headache for me.

W: Well, before we decide where we’re going to move, we’d better look at schools. The kids’ education is really important.
M: My workmates gave me some information. There are three state schools and two private.
W: What are they like
M: Well, Comprehensive is the biggest, about one thousand students. They have about forty students in a class.
W: That’s a lot. I expect the private schools have less.
M: Yes, the private schools have only twenty—two a class. There are about two hundred students at Carlton Abbey and one hundred and fifty at St. Mary’s.
W: How many children go on to university every year in each school
M: Well, Weymouth High is very good. Fifty percent of the students go on to university. And Carlton Abbey even better, seventy percent. Donwell and St. Mary’s are not so good, only fifteen percent and Comprehensive not much more, about twenty percent.

M: Excuse me. Can you tell me how to get to the Music Building from here
W: Oh, are you new here
M: Yes, I just got here last night.
W: By the way, is there a concert
M: No, a famous writer will give a speech there. Can I go by subway
W: The subway station is still under repair. And you can’t find a public bicycle at rush hour.
M: Oh, any other choices
W: Well, you have two choices. If you want to go right now, you can walk straight down this street until you pass a library, and then turn right. The Music Building will be straight ahead.
M: How long will it take to get there
W: At least thirty minutes.
M: What’s my another choice
W: If you don’t mind waiting around for a while, you can take the bus. The bus only takes about ten minutes to get there, But you have to wait for the bus. It leaves every hour on the hour.
M: Well, I guess I might as well walk.
