What does the word ecology mean It was 11 by Ernst Hacckel, a German biologist. He joined two Greek words: oikos, meaning "house", and logie, meaning "the study of". Together they mean "the study of the house". The "house" Haeckel had in mind is our 12 , Earth. Earth is home for all living things - humans, animals, plants, and even tiny microbes.
To study a house is to learn how its residents(居民) use it. An ecologist is a scientist who studies the 13 between organisms (生物) and their environment. The environment is an organism's surroundings. It may 14 water, gases, rocks, and temperature.
Ecologists also study the balance of using the environment while protecting it.
An ecologist once asked a boy 15 he thought it meant to protect the environment.
The boy said, "You go into the forest and look for somebody who wants to cut down a tree. You take away his axe. You tell him about how 16 trees are. You say they are good for natural beauty, saving soil, and giving shelter to birds and other animals. "
"Good answer, "said the ecologist, " 17 it may not be easy to find a woodcutter to talk to. Also, remember that sometimes it’s 18 to cut down a tree. If we cut down too many trees, the forest will disappear. If we don't cut down any trees, we won't get any resources from the forest. We have to find the right 19 . "
"I get it, "the boy said. "We need the forest's 20 for wood and paper or we might not have
desks or notebooks for school. "
"Exactly - and school is a good place to learn about ecology, "added the ecologist. "Then you will know how to protect the natural environment. "

"All right then - just one more piece … "Words every girl has said when they are faced with the delicious cheesecake. Of course, many of us know we may eat the whole thing in the end.
It isn't just girls. Most of us find it hard to say "no"to something attractive. However, scientists now say that willpower is very important to success and a happy life.
Scientists in different countries have been studying the effects of willpower on people's lives for a long time. The results are similar, according to an article on February 7 in the Guardian, a famous British newspaper.
In one experiment, scientists told young children that they could either have a marshmallow(圆形软糖) now, or two marshmallows in 15 minutes. Waiting obviously needed more willpower. Scientists then continued studying the children as they grew up. They wanted to see if some children always had stronger willpower. They also wanted to see how having stronger willpower affected their lives.
Years later, scientists found that the children who had waited for two marshmallows were all healthier, happier and richer adults. Oppositely, the children who had shown weaker willpower at that young age were more likely to be in low - paid jobs, to be overweight, to have social problems.
But there is hope, Roy F. Baumeister, an American social psychology(心理学)professor told the
Guardian. Baumeister says we can train our willpower just like we train our muscles. Even a little practice can strengthen our overall self - control if we do it regularly.
You could start by making yourself stand up straight, speaking in complete sentences, or using a computer mouse with the other hand. Scientists have found that people who manage to change little habits often perform much better in laboratory willpower tests.
Like muscles, willpower can "get tired". Don't try to do too many things at the same time, or when you don't have enough energy, for example when you are ill. If you already feel tired, you can try to recharge(恢复) your willpower with a good night's sleep and by eating well.
( )21. The example of a girl eating cheesecake is used to
A. prove that girls have weak willpower
B. introduce the topic of willpower to the readers

D. show the connection between willpower and success
( )22. What can we infer from the experiment
A. The scientists had already known the results before the experiment.
B. It showed that willpower is the most important to success and a happy life.
C. The children who chose to wait were more likely to be successful in their lives.
D. The children who chose only one marshmallow at first had stronger willpower.
( )23. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the training of willpower
A. You should have a goal every day. B. Good rest and proper diet can help.
C. Willpower needs to be exercised regularly. D. Keep willpower from being used too much.
( )24. What is the article mainly about
A. How willpower and muscles are similar and how they can be trained.
B. How willpower afects people's lives and how it is similar to muscles.
C. How willpower is important to success and how we can make it stronger.
D. How willpower is connected with success and how they affect each other.

The painter Craigie Aitchison was born in Scotland. He came to London intending(打算) to
study law,but went to art school instead. There he found the traditional drawing classes difficult, but still kept on painting.
In his late twenties he was given money by the Italian government to study art and liked early
Italian artists, which shows in some of his work. He loved the greens and browns of the Italian fields and the clear light there, and wanted to put this light into his paintings.
This led him to paint colours thinly one on top of another from light to dark, but he insists he's never sure what the results will be. He says, "It's a secret - because I don't know myself. I don't start by painting yellow, knowing I'm going to put anything on top. "Like most talented people, Aitchison makes it sound easy. "Anyone can do the colours - you can buy them. I simply notice what you put the colours next to. "
Unlike some artists, he never does drawings before he starts a painting, as he feels that if he did, he might get bored and not do the painting afterwards. Instead, Aitchison changes his paintings many times before they are finished. This explains why his favourite models are people who don’t ask to see their pictures while he's painting them. "If I feel they're worried and want to look at the painting, I can't do it. "
Since moving to London years ago, he has not felt part of the Scottish(苏格兰的) painting scene. He says he doesn't want to follow any tradition, but just paints the way he can. However, his work still influences young British painters.

What do you see when you look at abstract(抽象) art Can you understand it Does it look like anything
Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or
sculpt things exactly like they looked. They didn't want their art to be realistic (现实主义的). They were more interested in basic shapes and colours.
Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours(his "blue period"). Later, he used more red and pink colours(his "rose period"). Many of his other paintings are called "cubist(立体画派)" because they are made of painted squares.
After a long time, Picasso's paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and
things using strange shapes. His works were so original that many of his fellow artists didn't understand them.
Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes, and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours and shapes to express feelings.
Other artists, like the surrealists(超现实主义者), were interested in subconsciousness(潜 意 识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbols in their works. The meanings or subjects of their works weren't always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams.
There are still many abstract artists around the world. It's often hard to say exactly what their art is about. That's the way many artists prefer. They want each person to look at art and find their own meaning in it.

It was Saturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell them apart sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the Art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet lesson. "How I wish I could do something different today, " said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. "How would you like to be me for a day "they asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Grace put on Karen's ballet dress while Karen put Grace's brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the Art lesson'started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the Art lesson finally ended, Karen didn't dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Grace was struggling in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, "Karen, you should remember the basic steps. You can't rely on copying what others are doing. "
When Karen and Grace got home, they were tired out. They decided that they would never try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that the grass was not always greener on the other side.
58. What was the twins' plan when they decided to do something different
59. How did Karen feel at the beginning of the Art lesson
