W: In Mauritania, many people make a living by raising animals. But in the long dry season, the grassland could hardly meet the basic food needs of the animals.
To help them, in 2017, the Chinese government sent a 57-year-old Chinese expert Mr. Ren to this northwest African country. At the time, many experts doubted whether the country’s natural conditions were suitable to grow grass.
As soon as Ren arrived, he began the experiment. With the help of other experts, he first found the best method of watering the fields, and then he used cow and sheep waste to improve the soil quality. During his experiments, he tried 21 types of plants. Luckily, he found the perfect types for the desert. Now the planting area is 433,000 square meters. And one of the plants can be gathered 11 to 12 times a year.
Last December, Mr. Ren received a national medal from the government of Mauritania for what he had done.
