学生活动:完成活动1。Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the questions.
a That football is such a simple game to play is perhaps the basis of its popularity.
b It is fun enough to attract millions of people.
1 What is the function of "to play" in sentence (a) Is it used to give description or show result

Compare them with the following sentences and answer the questions.
1 "To play" serves as attributive in sentence (a). It is used to give description.
2 "To attract" serves as adverbial of result in sentence (b). It is used to show result.
c That football is such a simple game that people play is perhaps the basis of its popularity.
d It is so fun that it attracts millions of people.

4 Why does the author choose to use sentences (a) and (b) in the reading passage
Now look for more sentences with these structures in the reading passage.
3 The first group of sentences uses to-infinitive as attributive and adverbial of result, while the second group uses attributive and adverbial clauses.
4 Because using to-infinitive makes sentences more concise.

不定式作定语
(1)不定式作定语,要放在哪里 ___________________
I want to get something to read during the vacation.假期里我想找点书读。
(2)某些抽象名词后面常用不定式作定语。常见的该类名词有:__________等。

(3)不定式作定语,与被修饰的词语有逻辑上的主谓关系还是动宾关系
He's always the first one to get up.他总是第一个起床。__________________

(4)当不定式作定语,且与被修饰的词语有逻辑上的动宾关系时,不定式动词应该是__________(及物动词还是不及物动词?);如果不定式动词为不及物动词,或者不定式所修饰的名词或代词是不定式动作的地点、工具等时,不定式后面必须有相应的介词,组成及物的动词短语。如:
I have important work to do tonight.我今晚有重要的工作要做。
He is looking for a house to live in.他想找个新房子住。

不定式作结果状语
(1)不定式作结果状语,常与learn, find, see, hear, make等动词连用。
即学即练:He returned home _______ his daughter had just been engaged.他回家后得知女儿刚刚订婚了。
(2)only+不定式,常表示_________(意料中常表示的还是意料之外的结果?)。I hurried to Professor Wang's house only to find he was out.我匆忙赶到王教授家,却发现他外出了。
(3) so/such... as to可作结果状语,表示“如此……,以至于……”。
例如:
【小试牛刀】She was ______ to be unable to speak.她气得连话都说不出来。
(4)enough后面加不定式作结果状语,表示“足以……,去做……”。
即学即练:This room is ________ a third bed.房间足够大,可以再放一张床。
(5)too...to...结构中,也是不定式作结果状语,表示“太……,而不能……”。
即学即练:He is_______________.他太小了还不会穿衣服。
Suggested answers:不定式作定语:
(1) 在被修饰语的后面
(2) plan, ability, chance, idea, hope, wish, promise, attempt, way; to explain
(3)主谓关系;动宾关系

2. With the help of the teacher, try to understand the basic characteristic of to-infinitive as attributive and adverbial of result and be familiar with the commonly used structure and the cases where to-infinitive can be used.
