教师活动:引导学生思考“Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks”,回答下面问题。
What are the similarities between painting and poetry
In my opinion, both painting and poetry are art forms that express beauty. Painting expresses beauty by means of colours, light and shapes while poetry does the same by means of sounds, words and abstract images. Both are well worth appreciating as they provide us with artistic pleasure.
教师展示四幅经典绘画作品,回答下面的问题。
(1) Which type do you think each of the paintings belongs to Why
Picture 1 is a portrait painting because the painting is of a person's head and shoulders.
Picture 2 is a still life painting because the painting is of flowers that have been arranged in a vase.
Picture 3 is a real-life painting because the painter painted real people in a real situation; they are dancing and socializing.
Picture 4 is a landscape painting because the painting is of a natural view of mountains.
(2) What famous painters and paintings do you know about
The Chinese painter Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) painted landscape scenes, birds and flowers, as well as people. He is well known for using splashed ink and colour technique, which embraces both Eastern and Western influences. One of his works, Lush Mountains in Misty Gleam, fully demonstrates this technique.
The abstract part of the painting is done by splashing paints and ink on a sheet of gold paper. The visual impact of the bright hues of colour is striking. Over the abstract imagery, he placed a pavilion at the top of the mountain which emerges from the mist with water falling down the side. The colours and the technique together created a painting that is recognized for its unique style and breathtaking scenery.
I know of Qi Baishi (1864-1957), who enjoyed painting many different animals, landscapes and still life scenes. He favoured using heavy ink in bright colours and he used an energetic brushwork style. In his famous work, Shrimps Playing Around, eight shrimps are drawn using simple lines. Each shrimp appears to be full of life and seems to be playing around in the water. Even though the painting may appear to be simple, the distinctive features of each shrimp can be clearly recognized on close inspection. The painting is a good representation of Chinese ink paintings.
One of the most influential artists in the Renaissance was Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). His most easily recognizable painting is Mona Lisa, an oil painting that was painted sometime between 1503 and 1519. The half-body portrait is of a woman with a distant landscape in the background. This painting has had art experts debating for centuries about the woman's true identity as well as the reason for her mysterious smile.
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a famous female painter from Mexico, best known for her brilliantly coloured self-portraits. Her painting technique is considered by many experts to be in the surrealist style. One of her famous paintings, The Two Fridas, shows twin figures holding hands, each figure representing an opposing side of Kahlo-one is the traditional Frida in a traditional Mexican costume, with a broken heart, sitting next to an independent, modern dressed Frida.

二、While-reading
1.教师活动:引导学生思考下列问题,并通过文章标题猜测文章大意。
(1) What do you think the travel journal talks about according to the title and the pictures
The travel journal might talk about the thoughts people have when they look at one of an artist's works for the first time. It gives a different impression every time one looks at it. The title "First impressions", together with the pictures, also reminds me of the Impressionist painters and their unique techniques. The travel journal could mention how they used the techniques, what effects they created, as well as the reasons why artists used them.
(2) Why do people visit art museums
People visit art museums to appreciate the artists' spectacular masterpieces and to be inspired by creativity. They instil a sense of awe that someone created something so beautiful or unique. Visiting art museums is also one way to learn about cultures, beliefs and traditions. Art museums let us see a country's history through its art. They are the pride of a country because they showcase its creative intelligence.

(5) What influence did the Impressionists have on other painters
The Impressionists influenced the Post-Impressionist painters as well as painters in modern art, by encouraging artists to look at the world from an entirely new point of view.
5.学生活动:思考并回答下列问题。
(1)Which of the following do you think is most likely to be an impressionist painting Give your reasons.
I think the painting in the middle is most likely an Impressionist painting because it is probably a normal everyday scene for the painter. The boat and its surrounding scene are just an impression of what the painter saw so they are not painted in clear detail—the soft edges of the boats, factory chimneys, sea and sky seem to mix together. This tells me that the painter used the Impressionist free brushwork technique. The painter also used light and vivid colours to express his or her feelings.
(2)If you were a tour guide of the Musée d'Orsay, how would you introduce the museum to the visitors
The Musée d'Orsay is a world-famous art museum in Paris, France. It is unusual because it was previously used as a railway station. This museum is famous for its large collection of paintings from the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements of the 19th century. It also displays masterpieces from masters such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. A visit to the Musée d'Orsay allows visitors to look at and compare the different styles between the two art movements. They can enjoy looking at the world from an entirely new point of view.
