Unit 4 I used to be afraid of the dark.
Section B (1a-1e)
I. Teaching material and students analysis
This unit is aiming at talking about what the people used to be like with the usage of used to be, used to do. All the activities are mentioned about the topic of how to describe the people’s appearance and personality.And the students have learned English for many years .They know a lot of words to expression themselves.So they haven’t any trouble in this class.
Ⅱ.Teaching aims
1. Knowledge objects
(1)Master the key words and phrases:
ant, inset, be on the soccer team, be nervous about
(2) Target language:
① I used to be nervous about tests all the time.
② We used to hate P.E class in the past, but now……
2. Ability objects
(1) Enable students to describe people’s appearance and personality by using certain adjectives and the structure of “used to”.
(2) Be able to talk about what someone used to be like and what he used to do.
3. Moral objects
Enable the students to deal with changes correctly.
III. Teaching important points
Learn to talk about what someone used to be like and what he used to do by using “used to”.
IV. Teaching difficult point
To grasp the structure used to, including statements, yes/ no questions and short answers.
V. Teaching aids
The photos about one’s childhood and PPT.
VI. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warming- up and revision
1. Daily greeting.
2. Let the students enjoy an English song Days of My Past about childhood ,then I will ask some students to share their childhood by using the structure of “used to be” .
e.g. S1. I used to be shy when I was a child.
S2:I used to be thin when I was a child.
S3: I used to have short hair when I was a child.
Step 2: Presentation
Work on 1a
1. Have students look at the pictures in 1a. Try to understand the activities in the pictures.
______ P.E. class ____ painting pictures
____ music class ____ ants and other insects
2. Let students check the things they used to like when they were child.
Work on 1b.
1. Let students try to write some sentences. Then discuss with their partners.
e.g. I used to like painting pictures when I was a child.
2. Let the students write their sentences on the exercise book.
Step 3: Listening
Work on 1c:
1. Tell students to read the sentences in 1c and try to understand the meaning of them.
1) ____ I didn’t use to like tests.
2) ____ We used to walk to school.
3) ____ I used to hate P.E. class.
4) ____ I used to be on the soccer team.
2. Play the recording for the students. Students just listen for the first time. Play the recording again and check the sentences students hear.
3. Check the answers on the screen.
Work on 1d:
1. Let students read the sentences in 1d first. Tell them to listen again and fill in the blanks with the right words.

In this class, we’ve mainly learned how to talk about something you used to like or dislike by using the structure “used to”
