Though the harmful effects of plastic on wildlife and human health are well-documented, this material is hard to avoid. Nearly everything we touch, from grocery bags to drink bottles, to food packaging, contains plastic. Now, Amsterdam’s Ekoplaza supermarket is making it a little easier for consumers to reduce consumption of single-use plastic bags and containers, which are blocking our landfills at alarming rates, with a special plastic-free aisle (通道). Believed to be the world’s first, the aisle has 700 products on sale including rice, beans, yogurt, chocolate milk, cereal, snacks and meat.
While items still require packaging, everything is housed inside reusable or recyclable containers made of glass, metal or cardboard. The unique idea was given to the grocery-chain officials by UK-based environmental group A Plastic Planet, which takes the lead to advocate for at least one plastic-free aisle in supermarkets around the globe. The non-profit has even created a signature “plastic-free” mark to help consumers identify eco-friendly packaging. “This is a consumer-led campaign, ” said a group co-founder Sian Sutherland. “We’re a grass-roots organization. So obviously we’re working with industry and the government, but most importantly, we represent the public. ”
Ekoplaza, which plans to roll out the plastic-free aisles across its 74 stores by the end of the year, is not the only company trying to reduce plastic waste. In Berlin, the Original Unverpackt grocery store has been trying to change customer habits since 2014 by selling everything, from grain to produce and even soaps without plastic packaging. The supermarket, which requires customers to bring their own reusable containers, even sells chewable toothpaste that needs no tubes.
Though it is encouraging to see companies trying to make a difference, for real change to happen, consumers have to avoid products encased in plastics, even if it means giving up their favorite food or drink. As Sutherland put it, “Plastic food and drink packaging remain useful and yet a destructive presence on the earth for centuries afterwards. ”
1. What does Ekoplaza want to do by setting up a plastic-free aisle
A. Cut down managing cost.
B. Reduce plastic-packaging.
C. Make shopping much easier.
D. Increase the amount of sales.
2. Which of the following can make a real difference
A. Consumers. B. Supermarkets.
C. Organizations. D. Companies.
3. What does Sutherland think of plastic packaging in the future
A. It will be of no use to consumers.
B. It will exist for a long time.
C. It will disappear in this century.
D. It will replace other containers.
4. What might be the title of the passage
A. Plastics Are Harmful to the Environment
B. Non-profits Can Help the Supermarkets
C. Consumers Should Change Shopping Habits
D. Supermarkets Take Action for a Cleaner Planet

VI.读后续写
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.
—Tenneva Jordan
I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At the age of eleven, the oldest and my mom’s “grown up”girl, I had to keep my cool. I was in the middle school after all. But every chance I got, when I was alone, I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I had examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.
It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered (撒) presents, she would sigh and warn us, “There won’t be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed. ” Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In years past, the presents would pile up and spill out from under the tree, taking over the living room. I had heard the phrase “giving is better than receiving” , but thought that whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason I couldn’t get to sleep on Christmas Eve.
On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self-control.
“Here’s another one for you, ” said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, confused. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas. I recognized this one. But it had not been mine. It was my mom’s. A new label had been put on it, with my name written in my mother’s handwriting.
“Mom, I can’t. . . ”
注意: 续写词数应为150左右。
I was stopped by my mother’s eager, joyful look.

【参考范文】
I was stopped by my mother’s eager, joyful look. “Let’s see what it is, honey. Hurry and open it. ” It was a blow dryer. Though this may seem only a simple gift, to me it was so much more. Being an eleven-year-old girl, I was stunned. In my world, where receiving lately outweighed giving, my mom’s act of selflessness was incomprehensible. It was a huge act. Tears filled my eyes and I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must love me to give up her Christmas so that I could have a few more presents.
I have always remembered that Christmas fondly. It had such an impact on me. As an adult with children in my life whom I adore, I can now understand my mom’s actions. I see actually, she was not “giving up her Christmas” as I had thought, but was finding an even greater joy in her Christmas because giving truly is better than receiving. My mom’s simple act meant the world to me. Whenever I look back on my mom’s giving, I will choose to give in my life.(共53张PPT)

Call it a mobility system or a wheelchair — it can be seen at the Tokyo airport moving on its own. It is helping with social distancing while fighting the spread of the coronavirus. It also helps older passengers and those who otherwise need assistance walking the last few steps to the boarding gate.
The mobility system seats one person and runs on its own without hitting anything. It has a pre-programmed path of about 600 meters at Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport. It was shown on Monday by WHILL, the company behind the technology.
WHILL Chief Executive Satoshi Sugie said robotics and self-driving technology reduce the need for a human at the wheel. They are good for these times of “living with” coronavirus. The ride lasts several minutes. It travels from the security area to the boarding gate at a speed of 3. 5 kilometers per hour. But many people hope the technology can help in other places, such as hospitals or parks. The technology uses sensors and cameras to see a clear path and avoid hitting those walking toward it. It could also help Japan free up laborers. Japan, like many other nations, suffers from a labor shortage. The technology could free a worker to do another job.
Tests have been carried out at several airports since last year, including John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The company hopes to put it in airports around the world.
The person on the machine can start or stop it through a simple controller. It runs on batteries and is programmed to return to where it started when its passenger gets off. Anyone needing help walking long distances can use it at Terminal One at Haneda airport. It is called the “last-mile mobility, ”says WHILL.
4. What do we know about the mobility system

A. Sensors and cameras.
B. The speed of the machine.
C. The path of the ride.
D. The distance of the ride.
7. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. The system runs completely on its own.
B. The system has been put into use in the US.
C. WHILL will continue to test the system in airports worldwide.
D. The system is controlled by a passenger to return to the start.

Georgia O’Keeffe always thought of herself as an artist. By 1928, the rest of the world did, too. At the age of 41 she was living in New York City and becoming a well-known painter. Still, O’Keeffe wasn’t happy. New York had been a good source of ideas for almost ten years. Now those ideas were drying up. O’Keeffe felt like she needed a change. She had visited New Mexico in 1917 with her sister. The wide open space had thrilled her. “Maybe I should go back, ” she thought. In April of 1929, O’Keeffe packed her bags.
The wide open space of New Mexico drew O’Keeffe in. She spent hours just watching the sky change. Because the light was so clear, she felt like she could see for the first time. The beauty of the land renewed her. She couldn’t wait to start painting. Cow and horse skulls and desert flowers filled her canvases (画布). The colors of the desert inspired O’Keeffe. As a result, she made new choices in her artwork. “The color up there is different, ” she explained. She loved the dusty blues and greens.
That August, O’Keeffe went home to New York. It was the start of a pattern. Each spring, she traveled to New Mexico to paint. These trips restored her spirit. Then, in the fall, she would return to New York. There, she showed her work. Each time O’Keeffe visited New Mexico, she explored a little more.
The bleached(漂白的, 晒白的) animal bones and skulls that O’Keeffe found excited her because she could see their special beauty. The bones didn’t mean death to O’Keeffe. To her, they showed the lasting beauty of the desert. The landscapes, clear light, and bright colors also spoke to her. She often painted close-ups of the rocks and mountains. Later, she began to travel more in search of new ideas. However, she always came back to New Mexico.
As O’Keeffe grew older, her eyesight began to fail. Still, O’Keeffe wasn’t ready to give up. Her friend Juan Hamilton helped her work with watercolors. He also taught her to sculpt. As a result, she made art into her 90s. When she died at the age of 98, Hamilton sprinkled her ashes over the desert. Her body became part of the land that had touched her art and her life.
8. Why was O’Keeffe unhappy in New York in 1928
A. Because she was lack of the creative ideas.
B. Because she felt disappointed about her job.

Martha Graham, born in 1894, was one of the most famous dancers and creators of dance, whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the modern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture. She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.
Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on. So Martha’s parents didn’t approve of her desire to dance at the beginning. Until 1916, she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing.
In 1936, Graham made her defining work, Chronicle, which signaled the beginning of a new era in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner. Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, reflected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes.
Graham continued to dance past the age of seventy. Once again, she was met with criticism from people who came to watch her shows. But she didn’t give up. Her last completed ballet was 1990’s Maple Leaf Rag. A Dancer’s World is an introduction to Graham and her work. She tells about her dances and her dance group shows some of their methods.
Martha Graham received many awards during her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976. She was the first dancer to receive the country’s highest civilian honor. She died in 1991. In 1998, Time magazine listed her as the “Dancer of the Century” and as one of the most important people of the twentieth century.
12. Why are some famous artists mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To show Martha Graham was influenced greatly by them.
B. To show Martha Graham kept in touch with them regularly.
C. To show Martha Graham had a great effect on modern dance.
D. To show Martha Graham liked to make more friends with them.
13. Why didn’t Martha’s parents approve of her desire to dance at first
A. She was too old to learn American dance.
B. American dance was seen as a lower art form.
C. There was no academic school to teach dancing.
D. Her family was too poor to afford her tuition.
14. When Martha Graham continued to dance in her 70s, she________.
A. was warmly welcomed by the youth
B. achieved huge success once again
C. received many awards for her age
D. was attacked by people
15. What is the text mainly about
A. The background of modern dance in America.
B. The development of modern dance in America.
C. Martha Graham and her achievements in dance.
D. The awards Martha Graham won in her life.

When I was 17, I read a magazine article about a museum called the McNay Art Museum, once the home of a watercolorist named Marian McNay. She had requested the community to turn it into a museum upon her death. On a sunny Saturday, Sally and I drove over to the museum.
“Do you have the address ” Sally asked while we were on the way.
“No, but I will recognize it. There was a picture in the magazine. ” I answered confidently.
“Oh there it is. ” I pulled my car slowly over a house which seemed like a house with heavy smell of life rather than a former residence(故居).
Surprisingly, nobody was at the gate and admission was free. We opened the door and entered, excited. A group of people sitting around a table stopped chatting and stared at us.

The people in the hall seemed very confused, keeping their eyes on me with curiosity. What was their problem Some nice sculptures were well placed along the staircases (楼梯) and some paintings from Van Gogh or Picasso were hanging on walls and I appreciated them and highly praised the most beautiful house. Suddenly a picture of a man surrounded by a warm family caught my eyes and I also spotted the sweet girl among them.
“This is the most beautiful house I have visited. ” said I, turning sharply, almost scaring the girl standing behind me.
“The most beautiful house The most beautiful house! ” She murmured.
“Am I at the McNay Art Museum ” asked I.

She smiled, shaking her head. “Sorry, the McNay Art Museum is on another street. ” “What’s this place ” I asked still confused. “It’s my home. ” she said with a sweet smile and her answer shocked me. Recovering from the shock, I raced to the staircase and called Sally to come down immediately. I pushed her towards the front door, waving at the family and asking them to forgive us for breaking into their beautiful house. Outside, when I told Sally what had happened, she covered her mouth, laughing.
Years later, after a public speech, a woman approached and thanked me, asking whether I once entered a house, thinking it was the McNay Art Museum. “Yes. But how do you know We never told anyone. ”I asked in surprise. “That was my home. I was the girl saying hello to you in the hall. ”I locked my eyes on her and could figure out the familiar sweet smile. She told me she never felt lucky before we came over and she never realized what a beautiful house she once lived in. Her feeling about her home changed after that and she had always wanted to thank me.
