A
There was something in the elderly woman’s behavior that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of step, the woman moved with deliberation, and there was no hesitation in her gestures. She was as good as anyone else, her movements suggested. And she had a job to do.
The elderly woman had walked into the store along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, huffing(深呼吸) and sighing, checking her watch every few seconds. If she had possessed a belt, her mother would have been fastened to it as a means of dragging her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.
The older woman detached from the younger one and began to glance over the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title scrawled (潦草地写) on a crumpled(皱了的) piece of paper. The title was unusual and a bit unfamiliar. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about movies, about quality.
Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I think I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d passed away the previous Christmas.
As we walked along the back of the store, I narrated its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.
We found the movie, and I complimented(赞美) her on her choice. She smiled and told me it was one she’d enjoyed when she was her son’s age and that she hoped he would enjoy it as much as she had. Maybe, she said with a hint of eagerness, he could enjoy it with his own young children. Then, reluctantly, I had to return the elderly woman to her keeper, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.
I accompanied the older woman to the queue at the cash register and then stepped back and lingered near the younger woman. When the older woman’s turn in line came, she paid in cash, counting out the dollars and coins with the same sureness she’d displayed earlier . . .

I began writing poems fifteen years ago while I was in college. One day I was in the library, working on a term paper, when I came across a book of contemporary poetry. I don’t remember the title of the book or any of the titles of the poems except one: Frankenstein’s Daughter. The poem was wild, almost rude, and nothing like the rhyme-and-meter poetry I had read in high school. I had always thought that poetry was flowery writing about sunsets and walks on the beach, but that library book contained direct and sometimes shocking poetry about dogs, junked cars, rundown houses, and TVs. I checked the book out, curious to read more.
Soon afterward, I started filling a notebook with my own poems. At first I was scared, partly because my poetry teacher, to whom this book is written for, was a serious and strict man who could see the errors in my poems. Also, I realized the seriousness of my devotion. I gave up geography to study poetry, which a good many friends said offered no future. I ignored them because I liked working with words, using them to reconstruct the past, which has always been a source of poetry for me.
When I first studied poetry, I was single-minded. I woke to poetry and went to bed with poetry. I memorized poems, read English poets because I was told they would help shape my poems, and read classical Chinese poetry because I was told that it would add clarity to my work. But I was most taken by the Spanish and Latin American poets, particularly Pablo Neruda. My favorites of his were the odes—long, short-lined poems celebrating common things like tomatoes, socks and scissors. I felt joyful when I read these odes, and when I began to write my own poems, I tried to remain faithful to the common things of my childhood—dogs, alleys (小巷), my baseball mitts (手套) and the fruit of the valley, especially the orange. I wanted to give these things life, to write so well that my poems would express their beauty.
I also admired our own country’s poetry. I saw that our poets often wrote about places where they grew up or places that impressed them deeply. James Wright wrote about Ohio and West Virginia, Philip Levine about Detroit, Gary Snyder about the Sierra Nevadas and about Japan, where for years he studied Zen Buddhism (禅宗佛教). I decided to write about the San Joaquin Valley, where my hometown, Fresno, is located. Some of my poems are absolute observations and images of nature — the orange yards, the Kings River, the Sequoias (红杉). I fell in love with the valley, both its ugliness and its beauty, and quietly wrote poems about it to share with others.

V七选五
Travelling with friends can be an absolutely amazing experience where you could make lifelong memories or it could end up ruining your friendship. 1 Here are some rules you should follow to make sure your next trip with friends goes as smoothly as possible.
2 Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that’s not always the case. In an effort to keep everyone happy, go over travel plans and expectations ahead of time. Have each person categorize activities or sights into “must-see” “want to see” and “would go if we have time”. Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions.
Communicate and respect each other. Everyone has personal preferences when travelling—from getting the bed closest to the bathroom or sitting in the airplane’s window seat. But sometimes things don’t go as you like. In this case, share your requirements directly with your travel companions. 3 Have a conversation when problems arise, for communication is the key.
Don’t disappear. When travelling with a group—or even just one other person — you may want some alone time. That’s completely fine, but make sure your friends know where you are and have a way of contacting you. 4
Get off your phone. Of course, your friends will understand if you need to take a call from a family member, or in the event of a work emergency, but other than that, try to stay off your phone. 5 After all, the appeal of this type of trip is to spend time with friends. Just enjoy it!
A. Give each other some space.
B. Include at least one activity for everyone.
C. And remember that consideration and respect go a long way.
D. At the same time, listen to their concerns and be respectful of them.
E. Don’t respond to non-urgent work contact or send messages frequently.
F. It’s especially true of travelling in foreign countries or unfamiliar places.
G. So it’s important to make sure you and your friend(s) are on the same page.

I’m Li Jin, a student at Chenguang High School. It is acknowledged that a lecture about western art will be given in the coming interchange activity in summer vacation. I’m writing to give some suggestions about the topic of the lecture.
As a music lover, it is classical music that I’m greatly fond of. Therefore, I would appreciate it if you could talk about something about western classical music, such as the origin and developing progress of it. In addition, some representative figures and their masterpieces are also expected to be introduced.
I firmly believe this lecture will enrich my knowledge about western classical music and develop students’ interest in western art. I hope that you will take my suggestions into serious account and have a wonderful trip to our school.

As William Shakespeare is to literature in English, so is the poet Du Fu to the Chinese literary tradition. “We have Dante, Shakespeare and Du Fu. These poets create the very values by which poetry is judged, ” remarked Harvard Professor Stephen Owen in Du Fu, China’s Greatest Poet, a new documentary that aired on April 7.
Aimed at introducing the charm and beauty of traditional Chinese literature to viewers around the globe, the documentary invited famous British actor Ian McKellen, who played the wizard Gandalf in the film series The Lord of the Rings, to read 15 of Du’s poems that have been translated into English.
The one-hour film traces the poet’s life experiences in detail. Born in 712, Du lived under the reign of the Tang Emperor Xuanzong(713—756), a time marked by extraordinary prosperity, inclusiveness and cultural accomplishment.
However, as the An Lushan Rebellion floored the empire, the 43-year-old Du, the former civil servant at the Tang court, had to take his family out of his hometown, and faced starvation and sufferings. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing and about 1, 500 poems have been kept over the ages.
Even though he never held a high position in the government, Du still cared about common people. For example, in the poem My Cottage Unroofed by Autumn Gales, he wrote that “Could I get mansions covering ten thousand miles, I’d house all scholars poor and make them beam with smiles”.
“That is why he was honored as a Poet Sage by later generations. A difficult life and his spirit of concern about the world helped him create so many masterpieces, ” Shi Wenxue, a cultural critic based in Beijing, told the Global Times.
Without doubt, Du is a cultural symbol of ancient China, but his brilliant works and core spirits have also inspired people outside of China. As the documentary noted, his work represents a precious cultural heritage for the entire world, not just China.
4. What can we know about the documentary

Posing for a picture and flashing the V sign may expose your fingerprints, giving criminals an opportunity to steal your important information.
Researchers with the National Institute of Informatics in Japan successfully got fingerprint information from a picture during an experiment, even though the subject was photographed from three meters away, according to the newspaper.
“Once you share them on social media then they’re gone. Unlike a password you can’t change your fingers. ”
Biometric(生物统计的) security is reaching the mainstream with more than 50 percent of mobile phones set to include fingerprint recognition for the first time in 2017. The technology is also used in immigration control and for access to high-security controlled areas.
Photos that include both people’s faces and fingers run a higher risk of revealing personal information, and the risk for celebrities is even higher.
Chinese experts in fingerprint identification confirmed the possibility. “Technically, we can use high-definition video cameras to obtain people’s fingerprints, ” said Dr Yin Desen of the First Institute of the Ministry of Public Security. He also said that people’s external features are easily recorded. However, compared to video, it is more difficult to obtain fingerprints through just one photo.
According to experts, criminals are able to use counterfeit fingerprints to commit crimes, such as stealing fingerprint passwords and signing agreements. Yin warned that people should pay more attention when they leave fingerprints or use them as passwords.
8. What is the difference between passwords and fingerprints
A. Passwords can be changed.
B. It is simple to recognize fingerprints.
C. Fingerprints have a higher security level.
D. Passwords depend on users’ experience.
9. Which of the following statements is not mentioned as the use of biometric security
A. Fingerprint recognition.
B. Immigration control.
C. Vehicle identification.
D. High-security controlled area.
10. What does the underlined word “counterfeit” probably mean in the last paragraph
A. Reliable. B. False.
C. Genuine. D. Unique.
11. What can we infer from the text
A. People should use passwords.
B. All the photos run a high risk of exposing personal information.
C. Passwords can be more easily stolen than fingerprints.
D. It’s easier to give away information of fingerprints through video.

It is in human nature to explore new things. To that end, many countries have been exploring space for many decades, particularly the US, Russia, and countries in Europe.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At Sandringham I got to know this kid, Teddy, a funny guy. He is one of those friends with whom you start hanging out and from that day forward you’re never apart. We were both very naughty. When you put us together, it was a disaster. Walking home from school, we’d throw rocks through windows, just to see them broken, and then we’d run away.
One Saturday night, we were at the shopping center and most of the shops were closed. The cinema was still showing movies and the building was still open. There was a shop that sold greeting cards and magazines and it didn’t have a door. So when it closed at night, there was only a metal gate, like a trellis(架子), which was pulled across the entrance and padlocked(用挂锁锁上). Walking past this shop, Teddy and I realized that if we put our arms through the trellis, we could reach the chocolates just inside. We reached in, took a few, and then swallowed the chocolates. We started going back again and again to steal more.
We did this every weekend for at least a month. Then we pushed our luck too far. It was a Saturday night, I reached in to take a chocolate, and at that exact moment a security guard came around the corner and saw me with my arm in up to my shoulder. I brought my hand out with a bunch of chocolates in it. I saw him. He saw me. His eyes went wide.
注意: 续写词数应为150左右。
I tried to walk away, acting natural.

I’m glad to hear from you. I feel proud knowing you are interested in Tang poems. As for my favorite poet, it must be Li Bai. Living in a golden age of Chinese poetry, Li Bai is best known for his rich imagination and striking imagery in his poetry, as well as for his great love for liquor. Many of his poems will remain today. Li Bai is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty. What I appreciate most about him is his landscape poems, which are clear and natural in words with profound messages. They convey his strong love for nature, friends and the people. Best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

I tried to walk away, acting natural. “Hey! Stop, young boys! ” shouted the guard. When the security guard yelled, Teddy and I realized we were in trouble. If he caught us stealing chocolate, we would both get scolded. So we ran out of the shop and quickly down two different alleys. The security guard hesitated and ran in Teddy’s direction.
The next day when Teddy and I ran into the classroom, the headmaster was there waiting. He didn’t criticize us, and only told us that the security guard yesterday broke his leg because of chasing us. Both of us shocked to hear that. I didn’t think what we did could cause such a serious consequence. We cried very sad. “I think they will forgive you if you are willing to admit your mistakes”, said the headmaster. Teddy and I kept nodding and showed our appreciation. Later, we apologized to the security guard and the storekeeper. We also offered to work for the shop to pay for the damage. A few days later, the guard was discharged from the hospital and returned to work. And Teddy and I realized that if we do something wrong, we have to take responsibility.
