“A usual boring day!” This would be the answer from Roman if somebody asked him how his day was. These days he found everything boring, and nothing excited him.
One day he was lying on the bed in his room as usual. Suddenly the light went off. His room was rather hot without an air conditioner. Though he did not want to leave his room, he had to. Unwillingly, he left his room and came to the living room. It was slightly cool there as the living room had two huge windows.
His young brother was playing with his friend. They were rolling on the floor. He was looking out for the TV remote, but couldn’t find it. He got up and searched for it everywhere, but the remote was nowhere to be seen. He looked at his brother who was still lying on the floor, playing.
He asked him, “where is the remote ”
“Under the sofa,” his brother yelled.
He tried to look through the remote, but it was dark. He put his hand under the sofa. He touched something, grabbed it and took his hand out. It was a snake in his hand!
Upon seeing that, his brother started to yell, “Snake! Snake!” Mom came as soon as she heard the shouting. She was too horrified to see a snake. She was so scared that she even couldn’t speak a word. Two kids were trying to hide behind each other’s back. “What an old trick!” Roman thought and threw it to the kids.
As the snake landed on the floor and neared the kids, it started moving from the left side to the right. Only then did Roman realize that the snake was real, and not a toy. He threw the snake to kids because he thought it was a fake snake and it was the kids who were playing some tricks.
This time Mom almost got a heart attack. Now Roman was scared, too. The snake was only 10 meters away from the kids and was staring at them. They even couldn’t call the rescue team. There might be some deadly damage before their arrival. There was not much time to think. It was the time for a quick action.
Paragraph 1:
As Roman was farther from the snake, he jumped onto the window and grabbed the curtains.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
After the rescue team caught and took the snake away, everyone went inside the home.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version 1:
As Roman was farther from the snake, he jumped to the window and grabbed the curtain. He pulled it so hard that the curtain was torn off immediately. Without hesitation, he threw the curtain at the moving snake and covered it. Then he grabbed the two extremely frightened kids’ arms and pushed them out of the room. The moment the kids went out, they started screaming. Roman went inside the room again and brought his mom out, who was standing still, frozen with fear. Later, he called the rescue team.
After the rescue team caught and took away the snake, everyone went inside the home. Everything returned to normal except that the two kids were still scared. Roman felt guilty and even angry with himself. How could he have thrown the snake to two kids But for the quick action, it would have hurt them! He went up to the kids, patting them on the head, and said carefully, “I’m so sorry. I mistook it for a fake one. Well...” After a short pause, he said in an excited voice, “Shall we play some game together now ” The kids burst into a smile. “What a thrilling day!” Roman texted his friend later that day.
Possible version 2:
As Roman was farther from the snake, he jumped to the window and grabbed the curtain. He pulled it so hard that the curtain ended up landing in his hand. Then without waiting a second, he threw the curtain over the snake. When the snake came under the curtain, he grabbed the kids’ hands and brought them out of the room. He again went inside and took his mother to the front yard. Mom was shaking like a leaf and the kids were sweating hard. Later, he called the rescue team from his cell phone.
After the rescue team caught and took away the snake, everyone went inside the home. Roman went back to his room and tried to sleep, but couldn’t, so he went to the living room where he found his brother was watching cartoons. He sat next to his brother and his cell phone beeped. It was another text from his friend asking how his day was. Roman slowly typed: “Jaw-breaking day”. Then he kept his mobile aside and dragged his brother’s head to his chest and started to play with his hair gently. Then he whispered something in his ear that sounded something like “Sorry”.

Several years ago,I was living in New York and working for an airline,so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart,I was sad because I couldn't stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.
When Christmas morning came, I awoke to a small hand feeling my face. "Dad, Merry Christmas!" was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys' faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection(检阅)had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they pulled everything into the center of the living room.
Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gifts,I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives(侦探)and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages, thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But I had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence(存在),for I hadn't been with them during Christmas these years.

I had to say that my disappointment was growing little by little. I was wondering whether I could get a gift when my younger son ran to me, who was really kind enough to save my face. He asked me to admire his gift which he deeply believed was carefully chosen by Santa Claus. He said happily that he would share some of the gifts of his and allow me to choose one from them. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart, still feeling disappointed.
Suddenly my wife walked up to me.It seemed that she had guessed how I felt. She asked me to look at the Christmas tree which was decorated with so many boxes. I think she was showing off her efforts on the decoration but she took off a small box and passed it to me smiling and saying it was for me. I opened it and saw a letter which read "We will never forget you. Merry Christmas!" Under the letter was a watch which was clicking with delight. I was moved to tears.

As a young boy, I was always a troublemaker and up to no good. I liked playing tricks and enjoyed treating animals in an unfriendly way, like running after cats crazily, making them scared at the sight of me. Besides, I often used a handmade catapult (弹弓) to shoot at birds on the trees.
All this did afford me indescribable pleasure but also got me unkind stares and blames from people around. My parents disapproved of my behavior and were constantly criticizing me for the tricks I played. I was even given a good beating from my father from time to time. Nevertheless, I ignored their warnings and did not correct my ways until an incident occurred.
One summer noon when I was eight, I was alone at home and just finished lunch. Feeling very hot and bored, I decided to hang around the neighborhood, holding my trusty catapult.
Soon, I came to Mr Smith’s house. His pet dog, big and strong, was tied to a post outside his house, lying in the shade lazily. Looking around, I found that no one was in sight. I decided to make good use of my catapult to play tricks on the massive dog. Picking up a few small stones from the ground, I aimed at the dog and fired them one by one. Several stones hit the poor dog and it began to bark (吠) loudly in pain and jump up and down. But I felt so fun that I didn’t stop doing so. Eventually, the dog’s anger was fueled and it barked wildly at me while struggling to break away from the rope. Not realizing anything wrong with my crazy behavior, I was just laughing happily.
Suddenly, the rope that tied the dog loosened and the big dog got free from its bonds. In no time, with a few powerful steps the dog was on me. Its sharp teeth sank into my leg. I screamed with pain and fright and fell to the ground, shouting out for help.

【答案】One possible version:
Luckily, my miserable shouts caught Mr Smith's attention. He dashed out of the house and freed the dog's teeth from my leg. Having caged the dog, Mr Smith rushed me to the clinic, where the doctor gave me an injection and dressed the wound carefully. On the way back home, I tearfully told Mr Smith the whole story. Not criticizing me, he looked me in the eye and said lovingly, “Animals are our friends that need our care and love and will treat us well if treated well".
His words left me ashamed and I decided to make a change. Instead of playing tricks on helpless animals, I did what I could to take care of them. With my father's help, I became a volunteer in our local animal shelter, feeding or walking animals. I even set aside my pocket money to contribute to charity which helps save homeless animals. Once a troublemaker, later a caregiver, I gradually won people's praise and respect I hadn't experienced before. Most importantly, never did I feel so rewarded and honored for what I did for animals.

John Blanchard stood up, straightened his army uniform(制服), and studied the crowd making their way through the station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't, the girl with a rose.
His interest in her began thirteen months ago in a library. Taking a book off the shelf, he found himself fascinated, not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin(页边的空白). The soft handwriting showed a thoughtful soul and brilliant mind. In the front of the book, he discovered the owner's name, Miss Hollis Meynell. With time and effort, he found her address. She lived in New York. He wrote her a letter, introducing himself and inviting her to correspond(通信). The next day he was shipped overseas for military service.
During the next year and one month, the two began to know each other by mail. Each letter was a seed falling on both hearts. A romance was budding. Blanchard asked for a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like.
When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting—7 pm at Grand Central Station in New York. “You'll recognize me,” she wrote. “By the red rose I'll wear my dress.” So at 7:00 he was in the station, looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he'd never seen.
A young lady was coming toward him. Her figure was long and slim; her blonde hair lay back from her ears; her eyes were blue as flowers; her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime coming alive. He went toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose. As he moved, a middle-aged woman whispered, “Going my way, Sir ”

I am so glad I could meet you and may I take you to dinner ”
Paragraph 2:
The woman's face broadened into a big smile. “I don't know what this is about on earth,” she answered, “but the young lady in her pale green suit who just went by begged me to wear the red rose on my coat. And she promised if you were going to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you that the young lady is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was just a test!”

Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. He’d hiked the park near his home many times. But after walking along a new path last April, the 45-year-old man was lost.
As the day was near dusk, his concern turned to fear after several hours of aimless wandering (游荡). The area was a wildfield. With no flashlight, only some water and a bar of chocolate in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean was unprepared for anything except the two-hour hike he’d planned.
Compean climbed to a place, about 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal (信号). “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, adding a photo showing where he was. The photo showed his dirty legs hanging over large rocks and plants.
All Compean could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast and the winds were blowing. Dressed only in a T-shirt, shorts, and a jacket, the hiker felt extremely cold. He hugged himself into a tight ball, using his backpack to shelter his legs from the cold winds. But he wouldn’t sleep. After finding two mountain lions and a bear, he spent the night suffering from stress, keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him to stop an animal to come close.
Sixty miles away in Ventura County, Ben Kuo, was a lover of satellite maps (卫星地图) which could help exactly locate things or persons in some areas. He was working at home when he read a twitter online from the Sheriff’s Department (警察局), showing a photo of a man’s legs. The Sheriff’s search-and-rescue teams had spent a night looking for Compean. Unsuccessfully, they post the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Ben’s unusual hobby helped find where Compean was. He had always loved looking for where photos were taken and always tried to identify where movie scenes or television shows were filmed by using a satellite map. When he saw the photo in which Compean’s legs are surrounded by an endless rocks and plants, he quickly pulled up a satellite map on his computer. With the help of the Sheriff’s Department, he fixed the nearby area. The location matched!
The rescue (救援) workers got there as soon as possible. A rescue helicopter was in the air above Compean. After spending more than 24 hours alone in the wilderness, he was finally pulled safely into the helicopter. Days later, Compean couldn’t wait to meet Ben. “Maybe we’ll go on a hike,” Compean joked. Getting serious, he told Ben, “I can’t be too grateful to you for saving my life. What a lucky dog I am!”
