I have dreamt of taking a trip to Hawaii since I graduated, but the best thing always needs waiting. I
took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park, which lies in Hawaii.
When we arrived at Haleakala National Park, we were advised to watch the early morning sunrise. I
was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon, so I could hardly wait to see the sunrise. In the next morning, we
all got out of bed very early and got to the seaside at 3 o'clock. In the first half an hour, we imagined how
wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when
the light touched our skin, so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later, I gradually lost my
patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness, and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends
were still extremely cheerful.
Nearly another one hour later, “Amazing!” Judy burst out and we all shouted to welcome the light,
which was really unbelievable. Until today, I dare say that it is the most impressive sunrise in my life.
However, waiting in the morning darkness is also one memory I cannot wipe from my mind forever.
Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed
determination, but what about the result after that It might turn out to be pleasing, unbelievable and
satisfying. So, it is really worthwhile to wait for the best.

October 15th is a Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than 20 countries to get
millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap. For example, donors will give
150,000 bars of soap to schools in Ethiopia.
Experts say people around the world wash their hands, but very few use soap at so-called important
moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.
Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap.
Partners include the United Nations Children’s Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and
soap makers Unlever and Producer & Gamble. The organizers say all soap is equally effective at removing
disease-causing germs. They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water
and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Rub for at least twenty
seconds. Then rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in
the air.
The partnership for Handwashing says soap is important because it increases the time that people
spend in washing hands. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually
leaves a pleasant smell. The Partnership for Handwashing also says washing with soap before eating or after
using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine or medicine. Handwashing could also prevent the
spread of other disease. When people get germs on their hands, they can infect themselves by touching their
eyes, noses or mouths. Then they can infect others.

English is full of funny expressions that don’t always make sense. Idioms are phrases and sentences
that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word, you may not
understand the idiom because you don’t understand the culture behind it. Here are some English idioms
based on animals.
When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop “monkeying around”.
To “monkey around” means to do things that are not useful or serious, or to simply waste time.
Many American families have and love pet dogs. But for some unknown reason, Americans use
“dog” in a phrase that means to feel unwell. If you are “as sick as a dog”, you’re really, really sick.
Sometimes you may also hear cats mentioned in conversations, “I told you to keep that secret, but
you have just ‘let the cat out of the bag’!” You probably guessed it—that idiom means to reveal a secret or
tell facts that were previously unknown.
Dogs and cats don’t always get along, but they appear side by side in a commonly used idiom. When
it rains heavily, people might say it’s “raining cats and dogs”.
Heavy rain often ruins people’s plans for outdoor activities. But on a lovely day, you can have a
picnic. If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be
really annoying. That experience perfectly explains why people often tell someone who keeps bothering
them to “stop bugging me”.
6 / 11

understanding of English, you have to learn idioms.
32. According to Paragraph 1, idioms are _______.

33. “Monkeying around” can be used to describe children _______.
A. jumping around and wasting time B. doing something useful and serious
C.playing with monkeys with their parents D. spending time playing with their family pets
34. What can be learned from the text
A. Dogs and cats always get along nicely. B. Bugs can be used to show your annoyance.
C. Americans believe cats can give away secrets.
D. Americans use the idiom “as sick as a dog” to describe a healthy man.
35. How does the text mainly develop
A. By sharing experiences. B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving examples. D. By listing figures.
