Fifty years ago, Noreen Wake left American University. She had loved singing in the choir, learned to swim in the pool and spent long days in the library studying.
But she couldn’t get her mind around algebra (代数)—the Maths that she had studied before in public housing and that was meant for business, the work of accounting. She left American University because of money and her poor grades.
She always planned to come back.
She went to work for the government and, over the years, married and had children, taught at a Sunday school, travelled abroad for the US Agency for International Affairs and other jobs, struggled against heart attacks, and helped poor children in the city.
Finally, in 1995, she started taking classes again. Maths was a horror, still, but this time she attacked it: she got a tutor (私人老师). She designed the major she wanted, a mixture of education, cultures and religion (宗教), just the thing for the job she had always wanted. Her mother died, and then her husband. She had to take time off, twice, for an operation, and sometimes she felt so weak that she would sleep in her car between classes.
Ten years later, Noreen Wake did it: she graduated from American University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, a couple of weeks before her 69th birthday.

There are some famous examples of animal intelligence. Pigeons are one example. These birds can find their way home from anywhere. Scientists have also shown that pigeons have really good memories.
Rico is a very famous example of dog intelligence. A scientist studied Rico carefully and found that he knew the names of more than 200 items. Rico could still remember the names after not hearing them for four weeks.
