The animals were having an argument. Each one wanted to be the first. So the Jade Emperor said that the animals should race across the river. The winner would start the cycle of the years.

The cat and the rat were good friends at that time. They asked the ox to carry them across the river. On the day of the race, they climbed onto the back of the ox and started early that morning.The cat became sleepy because she got up too early. When the ox was a few seconds away from the other side of the river, the rat pushed the cat into the water and went into one of the ox's ears.
