Traditional Festivals
Dragon Boat Festival is a Chinese traditional festival celebrated on the 5th of the 5th lunar month. So it’s also called the Double Fifth Festival. It has been celebrated by people all over China for centuries.
During Warring States Period (475-221BC), Qu Yuan jumped into the Milou River to kill himself with the dying of his state Chu. People were so sad about his death that they threw rice and meat into the river to protect Qu Yuan. Then, people started the tradition of memorizing Qu Yuan.
There are interesting customs during the festival. For example, people always eat zongzi, hang the picture of Zhong Kui and wear spice bags. The main custom, dragon boat races, has already become an international event.
