If you want to travel to a unique place to see some fall leaves, you might want to visit Mt. Koya in Japan. Koyasan is home to 117 temples(寺庙). In the fall, the Japanese maple (枫树) leaves turn deep red and orange colours. Among them are the 1,200-year-old temples and halls that were designed by Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism.
Visitors to Koyasan can spend the night at a temple. For dinner there is traditional Buddhist food called shojin-ryori. In the evening you can enjoy the gardens or relax in the baths before bed. The rooms have the paper doors typical of traditional Japanese buildings, often with a garden view. If you wake up early, there is a morning prayer(祈祷) at 6 a.m. and anyone can join before heading to breakfast.
In the centre of the temples is a cemetery(墓地). As you walk on the path you’ll see a deep well. The legend says that if you can see your face clearly in the water, you will live a long life. Further on there is a special stone which they say is as heavy as your crimes. You can try to lift it with one hand to see how heavy it is!
As you pass through the cemetery you will see some small stone men wearing bibs(围裙) and hats to keep them warm in the cold air. These are called Jizo, and they stay between Earth and the afterworld. They protect travellers, pregnant women, and also young children and babies before birth, during life, and after death. The reason they wear red bibs is because of their connection with the pronunciation of baby in Japanese.

Every Sunday morning I take a walk around a park near my home. There’s a lake in one corner of the park. Each time I walk by this lake, I see the same old woman sitting at the water’s edge with a small metal cage beside her.
This Sunday, I stopped walking and went over to her. As I got closer, I realized that there were three turtles(乌龟), unhurt, slowly walking around the base of the metal cage. She had a fourth turtle on her knee that she was carefully cleaning it with a brush, which made me feel surprised.
“Hello,” I said. “If you don’t mind, I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.”
“I’m cleaning off their shells,” she replied.
“Anything on a turtle’s shell weakens the turtle’s ability to take in heat and blocks its ability to swim. It can also impair and weaken the shell over time.”
She went on, “I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference. ”
“Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent It’s a waste of time. And 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells. So, how exactly are your efforts here truly making a difference ”

What is the purpose of lightning That might sound like a deeply philosophical question, but scientists may have shed some more light on the answer with the results of a recently released study.
The new study published at the end of April in Science found that lightning may play a bigger role in global climate change than was previously known by the scientific community. "Lightning increases the atmosphere ability to cleanse itself" the researchers wrote in the study.
According to the National Weather Service, the probabilities of being struck are quite low—1 in 1,222,000 in a given year and 1 in 15,300 in a lifetime, although many are familiar with the potentially deadly had caused by lightning, which is blamed for an average of 43 deaths in the United States each year, based on data from 1989 to 2018. What’s more, the earth is struck by lightning nearly 20 million times each year, and lightning can travel as much as 10 to 12 miles from a thunderstorm, instantly heating the air to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
As a result, the study estimates that somewhere between 2% and 16% of the oxidizing (氧化), or cleaning that happens naturally in the Earth’s atmosphere, is done by lightning. Why is this significant The oxidation process helps to reduce chemicals like carbon monoxide and methane in the atmosphere. These chemicals, known for being greenhouse gases, have been proven to contribute to rising temperatures associated with climate change. Researchers say that more studies will need to be conducted to verify the degree to which lightning contributes to the fight against global climate change.
12、What has the recent study found
A.Lightning is a deeply philosophical question.
B.Lightning reduces the atmosphere ability to cleanse itself.
C.Lightning prevents the process of oxidation.
D.Lightning is likely to be important to the climate change.
13、What can we learn from the National Weather Service
A.The earth is struck by lightning 20 million times each year.
B.Lightning causes many people to die every year in the U.S.
C.Lightning can travel as much as 11 miles from a thunderstorm.
D.The heat in the thunderstorm is 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
14、What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Carbon monoxide can lead to rising temperatures in climate change.
B.Lightning cleans the earth's atmosphere by accident.
C.The oxidation process can produce methane in the atmosphere.
D.The study has been completed by researchers.
15、What can be the best title for the text
A. The effect of climate change. B. The purpose of lightning.
C. The earth's atmosphere. D. Two greenhouse gases.

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.
Dust found the boy lingering on and hesitating what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want ” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”
The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines(小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs ” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

Reduce Waste on Campus
Last week, we took part in an activity aimed at reducing waste at school. Held in the schoolyard and lasting for three hours, the activity attracted over 400 students as well as some teachers to participate.
There was a lot going, among which two major events were most impressive. We watched an educational video in which the light was left on during the daytime, much uneaten food was thrown away, and the water was kept running with nobody around. Besides, all the participants worked in groups to make posters that could remind us to cherish what we had owned and stop every trivial wasteful behavior.
Through this meaningful experience, we’ve realized how severe the situation is and how urgent it is for us to spare no effort to make a difference.

参考范文
The boy headed back down to the old man’s house. The thought of knocking at the old man’s door filled the little boy with fear, though, he still knocked on the door, waiting breathlessly. Finally, it opened, and out came the old man. Seeing the boy holding a well-wrapped dog figurine, he looked very astonished but still glared at him without a word. Determined to break the ice, the boy gave the old man the gift with a precious card attached, expressing his care. Deeply moved by all the boy did, the old man could say nothing but to hug him tightly, the tears of appreciation welling up. Out of gratitude, he bought a magazine from the boy and saw him off.
From that day on something changed inside the old man. He adopted a real live dog and treated him as his child. It seemed that it was the company of the dog that led the lonely soul out of darkness and loneliness. Gradually, he was willing to greet others and wear a bright smile, expressing his appreciation to life. Indeed, only when we open up the door of our heart, can we be bathed in the brilliant sunshine and enjoy the warmth of love and care.
