“Even though one out of three American children live within a mile of their schools, almost not half of those students often bike or walk to class, ” scientists report.
“Children who live in the South, in country areas, or who have college-educated parents, are among those least likely to bike or walk to school, ” notes the report, which was published in July.
Sarah Martin and her workmates at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP)studied materials from more than 7, 000 children between 9 and 15 years of age.
They found that almost 35 percent of the children lived within one mile of their schools. Children between 11 and 13 years old were more likely to walk or bike than 9-year-olds. Children whose parents had a high school education were more likely to bike or walk than children with college-educated parents.
“The majority of children are missing an opportunity to increase daily physical activity, ” Martin said in a prepared statement.
According to the CDCP, nearly one in five (18. 8 percent)children between 6 and 11 years old are overweight(超重的). Increasing daily physical activity is one of the methods the CDCP gives to help deal with obesity (肥胖) in children.
Martin said that there are all kinds of reasons why children in city areas might be more likely to bike or walk. He said the fact is that schools in city areas may be in mixed-use neighborhoods where it is more likely to bike or walk, compared with other places where there may be fewer safe sidewalks.
21. What did Sarah Martin and her workmates find in the research
A. Younger children would like to bike or walk to school.
B. Older children are much stronger than younger children.
C. Kids whose parents received less education walk more.
D. Some children are becoming much lazier than others.

People speak English in different parts of the world. The same words can be used in different ways, depending on where you live. People can also have completely different ways of saying the same thing.
The Oxford English Dictionary(OED) is asking the public to help it add new words. Editors want to find the regional differences in English around the world. They want to expand its record of the language.
Last year, the OED, BBC Radio and the Forward Arts Foundation teamed up to find local words in the United Kingdom. It resulted in more than 100 regional words and phrases being added to the dictionary. One was “cuddy wifter”, which means “a left-handed person”.
Now, the OED is widening its search to English speakers around the world. Eleanor Maier, an editor at OED, said the response has been great. Editors are listing a bunch of suggestions to include in the dictionary.
These include Hawaii's “hammajang”, which means “in a disorderly state”. Another is the word for a swimming costume, “dookers” or “duckers”. It is used in Scotland.
The OED also might include the word “frog-drowner”, which Americans might use to describe a downpour of rain. Another possibility is “brick”. It means “very cold” used by people in New Jersey and New York City.
The dictionary has already found that, depending on location, a picture hanging off center might be described as “agley”. It might also be called “catawampous” or “ahoo”.
“The OED aims to cover all types of English, ” Maier said. That includes scientific words, slang and regional language. Maier also said that it can be difficult for the OED's editors to identify regional words. The terms are more often spoken than written down.
The appeal is called Words Where You Are. It is looking for more suggestions. “We were surprised and pleased by the number of regional words we were able to include, ” said Maier.
24. “Freezing” is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A. hammajang B. dookers C. brick D. ahoo
25. Which local word of the following is most likely from the United Kingdom
A. Agley. B. Frog-drowner. C. Cuddy wifter. D. Brick.
26. What can be inferred from the passage
A. It is challenging to create a complete collection of regional words.
B. People are not committed to responding to the appeal for regional words.
C. People use regional words only when they are home or with close friends.
D. Having an understanding of regional words can be helpful when communicating.
27. Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage
A. It's time to trace the source of local words.
B. The same English words can be used to say different things.
C. The OED aims to enlarge its collection to appeal to locals.
D. The OED will include more regional words from around the globe.

When an empty parking spot appears before us, many of us would see it for what it is—a place that could be filled with cars and trucks. But to eco-engineer Shubhendu Sharma, it's a space to be planted with trees and turned into a forest.
What's more, he believes these tiny forests can grow anywhere, including our most crowded and polluted cities where they can help maintain clean air and water and provide habitat for animals and insects. “A forest is not an isolated piece of land where animals live together, ” says Sharma. “A forest can be a complete part of our urban existence. ” Most of us know just how important trees are to our health and to the planet. Yet millions of hectares of forest are cleared every year due to farming, ranching, logging and construction. The World Wildlife Foundation estimates that 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest and surrounding ecosystems have already been lost.
Inspired by the work of Japanese scientist Akira Miyawaki, Sharma built a forest in the backyard of his family's home in northern India in 2010. He planted 100 young trees in the 75-square-meter plot. They grew and a dozen species of birds came to check them out. The plantings created welcome shade, and their roots were able to absorb even the abundant monsoon (季风) rains. After a year, he had his own forest. Since then, Sharma has founded a company called Afforestt. Its top priority is to bring back natural forests to places where they no longer exist. So far, Afforestt has planted 144 forests in 45 cities around the world. Sharma has shown you can take a space the size of six or seven parking spots and create a forest with 100 trees. Ready to create your own tiny forest If your answer is yes, let's follow Sharma's 5-step procedures to grow our own forests.

Though larger cities were mostly spared, Sunday's tornadoes damaged some small towns in the middle of the US. One of the hardest hits was Van, Texas, a town of about 2, 600 people located 70 miles southeast of Dallas. Winds there reached up to 140 miles per hour and damaged about 30 percent of the area. Weather experts said it was the strongest tornado to hit the town in more than 70 years.
Emergency workers in Van moved quickly to help those affected, but two people were killed and more than two dozen were injured by the tornado's winds. A driver in the nearby town of Corsicana was killed by floodwaters that had risen after the storm.
In Lake City, Iowa, a tornado tore the roof off South Central Calhoun High School. One hundred and fifty people had gathered in the school's basement for safety, and all escaped without major harm.
Nine people were injured in the 130-mph winds of a tornado that touched down in Delmont, South Dakota, but tornadoes weren't the only severe weather that state saw on Sunday. Residents in the Black Hills region were faced with a late-spring snowfall of 10 to 18 inches.
Scientists measure tornadoes using the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale. It categorizes tornadoes based on the amount of damage they cause and their estimated wind speed. EF1 tornadoes are the weakest, while EF5 tornadoes are the severest. The tornado in Van was categorized as an EF3.
Although tornadoes can happen in any state, they are most common in the central US. This is why that part of the country is nicknamed (给……起绰号)Tornado Alley. Though this past weekend's storms were damaging, they were not abnormal for this time of year. More tornadoes hit the US in May than in any other month, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
“We've had at least one tornado reported somewhere in the nation every day since May 2, ” weather expert Greg Carbin said. “It's a dangerous time of year. ”

I hit the back window of a new car with a hammer. In a flash I was in. I started the car, just like my older brother had taught me. I was 12 then. It seems crazy now. Today, everyone knows me as Donald Driver, a famous football player. I've dedicated (致力于) my life after football to helping disadvantaged kids around the country.
Mom would have killed me if she'd known what I was up to. My dad had gone to prison while she was pregnant with me. Mom wanted a better life for me, my two brothers and two sisters. She worked long hours to support us. But she often fell behind on rent and then we'd have to move. Trouble really started when we moved next door to a man named J. R. Mom trusted him to care us while she was at work, and he did. What Mom didn't know was that J. R. and his friends were thieves.
My older brother Moses and I served as lookouts (放哨人). We knew it was wrong, but the money was too good-$100 a night. We broke it into smaller bills, and regularly slipped some into Mom's purse. Then Moses discovered we could bring in even more cash by stealing cars. We practiced giving the same smile, hug and kiss for my mom when we came home, no matter what we'd done on the streets.
Now, though, I was about to get caught. The police got closer. I turned into a back alley. Suddenly, up ahead, a car backed out of a driveway. I saw a little old lady sitting in the driver's seat. But it was too late. I stopped and jumped out to see if the old lady was damaged. The woman, Evelyn Johnson, looked angry, but unhurt. “Go sit in my house right now, ” she said. It was the tone of voice that no kid can disobey. The police arrived and began to question the old woman.
“The man who did this ran that way, ” she said, pointing down the alley.

When the police drove off, Evelyn Johnson pushed some cookies in front of me. “You've been given an opportunity, ” she said. “Don't waste it. There aren't any second chances. ” I went back to Miss Johnson's house a few days later, trying to do something for damaging her car. I went again the next week, and I kept going back. “How are your grades ” she'd ask. “Did you win the game ” I liked that she cared. Sure, my mom cared, a lot, but she worked so much. Miss Johnson always had the time. Over the years, Miss Johnson had become like a real grandmother to me.
I spent more time studying and football kept me busy too. All throughout the difficulties, I thought about Miss Johnson and the chance she'd given me. I worked hard on the football field and became a famous football player. I turned into an alley to escape the police. Little did I know I'd find a way to a better life than I could ever have imagined.

M: Can I help you
W: Yes. I'm going on a tour to New York. I'd like to confirm my itinerary.
M: Well, let me see…Is that the tour with two nights in the hotel, but three days altogether
W: Yes, that's right, 1 arrive early on the third and leave at 10: 30 p. m. on the fifth.
M: That's great. I see that you've booked through to Chicago on the fifth. So it really is a full day on the fifth. Plenty of time for shopping and sightseeing. You'll even have enough time for a show in the evening because the train station is near the theatre.
W: I think that'll work out fine. I hope I'll be able to sleep on the train.
M: Believe me, it'll be an interesting experience to ride on the train.

M: Hey, have you heard that Robert is retiring
W: Oh, really Maybe you’11 be made the athletic director. Keep your fingers crossed!
M: Oh, I hope not. Whoever they choose is fine, as long as it isn't me. I'm the wrong person for that job!
W: Why do you say that I mean, what kind of person does it take
M: Someone with a more easygoing personality.
W: Oh, come on. You seem like someone who could handle anything.
M: Me You've got to be kidding. That job would make me much too nervous. Besides, I'm happy with things the way they are. I consider teaching tennis a challenge, and it's a chance to get people interested in sports.
W: So you really don't think you're fit for the job
M: No, I really don't. I can't imagine myself managing staff and worrying about finances. I don't handle pressure too well.
W : You know, that's not the impression I have of you at all. That's how I'd describe myself.
