Buy Nothing Day
For many people, the last weekend of November kicks off the holiday shopping season. But a growing number of people are celebrating a different kind of holiday. It’s called Buy Nothing Day. On this day, people are encouraged not to spend any money at all. The movement was started in 1995 by a group who cared about the environmental effects of shopping. “If we buy something, we think we are helping the economy. But we’re killing the planet, and wasting our resources,” said one organizer. “For one thing, just think about all the paper and plastic we’re wasting on shopping bags.”
There are Buy Nothing Festivals in most major cities. Participants go to big shopping centers and malls and hand out leaflets about the bad effects of shopping. Other participants cut up their credit cards in public.
Some organizers are unhappy this year because major TV networks will not give them air time to advertise Buy Nothing Day. Although it’s hard to advertise this event, over one million people in at least 65 countries are expected to take part in the next Buy Nothing Day.

I like playing the piano very much. Carl Smith became my new piano teacher when I was fourteen years old. In one of my lessons, he asked me how long I practiced the piano every day. I said three or four hours a day.
“Well, please don’t do that again!” he said to me loudly. “When you grow up, you are going to be much busier. Practice in minutes! Five or ten minutes before school, and it will become a part of your life.” I did as he told me. And I played the piano very well later.
Years later, when I was teaching at Columbia, I wanted to write. But for two years, I wrote nothing down on paper. My excuse (借口) was that I had no time. Then I sat down and wrote about a hundred words when I was free. To my surprise, I wrote many books in this way. And some of my books were came out.

I had spent an hour in the bank with my dad to transfer (转帐) some money. I asked him, “Dad, why not use online banking ”
“Why would I do that ” He replied.
“Well, then you won’t have to spend an hour here to transfer your money. You can do your shopping online. Everything will be easier!” I was excited to try to persuade (说服) my father to use online banking.
He asked, “If I do that, I won’t have to step out of the house ”
“Yes!” I said. I told him how even large things like cars or computers can be delivered (递送) to our doors now and how SF (顺丰速运) delivers everything.
However, his answer left me tongue-tied. He said, “Since I walked into this bank today, I have met four of my friends and I have chatted a while with the staff (员工). I have plenty of spare time, so I like to come to the bank. Two years ago, when I was seriously hurt, the store owner from whom I buy fruit came to see me. Besides, when your mom fell down a few days ago, the bank manager saw her and helped her get to the hospital.”
He continued, “Why would I want to stare at my computer all the time I like to know the person that I’m dealing with and not just the ‘seller’. Does SF deliver bonds (情感纽带) and relationships as well ”
I was silent after hearing his words. My dad was right, of course. We shouldn’t depend so much on technology. It’s better to spend time with real people.

An old farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson. Every day Grandpa read books in the early morning. His grandson tried to do everything he could to imitate (模仿) his grandfather.
One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa! I try to read books just like you, but I don’t understand it, and I forget what I do understand as soon as I close the books. Why do we read ” The grandfather looked at him and answered, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”
The boy did as he was told, but all the water was out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, “You’ll have to run a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the same took place. The old man said, “You’re just not trying hard enough. Try again.” The boy again put the basket into the river and ran very hard, but when he reached his grandfather, the basket was empty again. He said sadly, “See Grandpa! It’s useless!”

“It’s a waste of time,” I said when my mom told me to join Madcaps, a mothers and daughters club that helps charities. When she told me, I had to volunteer at a homeless shelter (收容所), I thought that things could not get worse.
We got there late and walked to the dirty homeless shelter, where we saw a lady shouting at the security guard (保安). He dealt with her and then led us to the kitchen, where we ran into five mothers and daughters from Madcaps.
Then homeless people started to walk in and a little girl, around 5 years old, walked up and pointed to the food I was handing out. I handed her a cold sandwich and she nodded to say thanks. She then walked over to her parents, who were seated at a large table.
As the little girl walked away, I thought about how much I had. I go to one of the top schools in San Diego, I have a great house by the water, and I have a warm meal every night. Then I thought of how little she had. She probably didn’t go to school, and this is where she sleeps and eats every day. The little girl makes me realize just how lucky I am.
After that experience at the homeless shelter, I had a change of heart. Now, I love Madcaps and don’t miss one meeting. I have gotten over being socially awkward (尴尬的) and now have many friends to play and hang out with.
I believe that if you have an open mind about things, you can learn about yourself. You can also make a difference.

In England, “Bank Holidays” are Easter Monday, May Day, the Spring Bank Holiday (the last Monday in May), the Summer Bank Holiday (the last Monday in August), Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. During the Bank Holiday, all the banks are closed.
The August Bank Holiday is perhaps the most popular one of the year, partly because it comes at a time when children are not at school. Very many people try to make this a long weekend, and go away to the seaside of the country. The result is that anyone who can manage to take a holiday at another day would be well advised to do so, for the roads get crowded with traffic.
In recent years, there has been much talk of creating another Bank Holiday, mid-way between August and Christmas, but nothing has yet been done. October would be a good month because the weather is often pleasant then. Many people would welcome an extra (额外的) bank Holiday or two because England has fewer than most European countries.

Many of us read news every day. Maybe it’s because we’d like to know what’s happening in the world. Today we can get news from TV or the Internet, but how did ancient people get news
At the very beginning, information spread from mouth to mouth. People knew their communities from neighbors or travelers. Ancient Romans changed the way people got news. They posted daily happenings at public squares in the cities. Ancient Chinese did it in another way. The government had news sheet(传单)sent to officials(官员)in the whole country so that people could know what was going on in the capital.
In the 15th century, the development of printing technology led to one step in helping news spread. In the 16th century, the first real newspapers appeared. People started to form the habit of reading newspapers and share their opinions. The invention of telegraph(电报)machines led to another big step in news spreading. News stories were sent to the papers in minutes instead of weeks.
Now we get news in seconds from all over the world. We can become some kind of reporters by posting online what happens around us.
