One night, as I was driving down the road, I found something was sitting in the middle of the road. A few seconds later, I realized I was looking at a large turtle (海龟). Afraid of it being crashed by cars, so I pulled over, ran across the road and dragged the turtle to safety. But I’d made one big mistake.
I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned out OK generally, I was determined to figure out how to move a turtle properly. I needed to find someone who dealt with turtles. I found the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. I talked to Dr. Sue, its Executive and Medical Director.
Dr. Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation, including rescue, settlement, birth programs, research, and education. Sue explained that southern Ontario is home to a vast majority of turtles in Canada, but is also one of the vastest road networks of the country.
“Ninety percent of injured turtles brought in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lot of time on land. And they do travel many kilometers on land for a variety of reasons, to find a nesting spot, or to hang out for the summer or winter. Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr. Sue said.
Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team gets to work with healing injuries, and help their patient.
24. Why did the author stop the car
A. To help the turtle. B. To see the thing clearly.
C. To prevent a car accident. D. To find something good.
25. What happened to the turtle
A. It got hurt by people previously. B. It lost its direction.
C. It was run over by a car. D. It was injured a little bit by the author.
26. What did Dr. Sue suggest at last
A. Leaving the turtles alone. B. Making Ontario home to turtles.
C. Changing the road conditions. D. Helping turtles find nesting spots.
27. What does the underlined word “patient” refer to in the last paragraph
A. The director. B. The turtle. C. The author. D. The driver.

The British are known for their sense of humor. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, “It’s a little damp (潮湿的) outside.” Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, “She isn’t exactly friendly.” Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humor.
Another key to understanding British humor is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies (喜剧) about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedies series Mr. Bean is a good example of this kind of humor.
Mr. Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr. Bean doesn’t talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr. Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr. Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humor. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humor.
28. Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes
A. The British often enlarge the fact.
B. The British try to understate something .
C. British jokes are connected with many different cultures.
D. British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.
29. The author explains understatement by _______.
A. describing a process B. using examples
C. following time order D. making comparisons
30. Mr. Bean makes laugh by ______.

C. making jokes about others’ accent
D. using his body movement and facial expressions
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. British Humor in Comedy B. Humor in Different Cultures
C. Developing Your Sense of Humor D. Understanding British Humor

For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
32. How did the researchers reach their conclusion
A. By analyzing a mass of data.
B. By conducting genetic research.
C. By comparing various levels of activity.
D. By tracking the subjects for many years.
33. What does the study show about depression
A. Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B. Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C. Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D. Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
34. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Harmful. B. Unusual. C. Common. D. Complex.
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To discuss a disease of depression.
B. To explain a phenomenon of depression.
C. To analyze a genetic risk of depression.
D. To introduce a method to lower the risk of depression.

Out of a 13-year-old girl’s summer boredom, I put up a tent in our yard and intended to sleep in it. It was midnight and my dad had been asleep upstairs. A girl knocked on the front door, asking if she could use our phone to call her parents.
I watched her struggle to dial the numbers. After she dialed the wrong numbers several times, I offered to do that for her. But after I dialed several times, there still no people answered the phone. Looking at the girl, I said, “Want to sleep in my tent ” She hesitated for a while and agreed.
I accompanied her into the darkness of the yard, entered the tent, and turned my lantern on. She told me how she got here. She and her parents had a nice dinner. After dinner, she expressed she wanted a beautiful dress in a special style, but it was too expressive for her parents. They argued fiercely(激烈地)and she left in anger. She wandered alone aimlessly(漫无目的地)until she found herself on an unfamiliar road. Her cellphone was in her parent’s bag and she seemed to have got lost. She wiped her eyes with my pillow, looked at me sadly, and then said, “Why didn’t my parents buy that dress for me ”
I knew just nodding obviously couldn’t solve the problem. “Do you think your parents love you ” I asked. Hearing my questions, she nodded and said regretfully, “My parents always meet my request as far as possible. This is my fault to ask them to buy that dress which they can’t afford(支付). ” At the time, my phone rang. It turned out her parents’ call. W: Jason, have you read today’s newspaper
M: No. I was surfing the Internet the whole morning. So what is in the paper
W: A ship that was carrying 14,600 live sheep from Romania turned over in Port of Midia in Romania last week. The ship was sailing to Saudi Arabia.
M: I hope nobody died in it.
W: The ship’s crew were all saved. Several different groups worked to rescue the sheep, but at the end of several days, only around 75 sheep were saved.
M: That’s really bad news. I don’t think it’s a good idea to move large numbers of live animals on ships.
W: I agree. Even when ships sail safely, the conditions often aren’t good for animals.
M: You’re right. I watched a video on the Internet in April last year. It showed thousands of sheep dying in the heat on a trip from Australia to the Middle East.
W: Poor animals! I don’t think live animals can survive in such weather as today’s in a ship.
M: Yes. The temperature is just too high in summer for both humans and animals.
Text 10
W: Good morning, boys and girls. My name is Tiera Fletcher. I’m glad to be invited here by your head teacher to tell you about what I loved doing as a young girl. When I was little, I was really interested in mathematics. My mom was working for a large company. She helped her company keep track of money. She began to teach me about the basic knowledge of mathematics before I turned five. I really loved dealing with numbers. I’d use math to help her with her shopping. We would go to the grocery store. She would have me tell her how much we would spend on the things. So that’s how I practiced math. Since I didn’t complain about it, my mom understood that I must have a love for math. When I was young, I also loved drawing and building things. When I was drawing a house, I would actually want to build it. I’d use simple materials to build it. Today, I work as an engineer at Boeing. I do what I truly love doing. I hope you all can find out what you truly love and do it in the future.
