The most basic and powerful way to communicate with another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we can give each other is our full attention(注意力).
When people are talking, just listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most of the time to care about it is even more important than understanding it. It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of saying and meaning "I'm so sorry" when someone is sad.
One of my friends told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often broke in to tell her that something similar happened to them. For some reasons, her sadness became a story about them. In the end, she stopped talking to most people. We connect through listening. When we break in on what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care.
This easy thing isn't that easy to learn. When I was young, I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence(沉默) often has more power to heal(治愈) and to connect than the kindest words.

9、What can we know from the passage
A. The only connection between people is listening.

C. People don't want others to break in when they are telling their stories.
D. People listen only because they are too shy to speak or don't know the answer.
10、What's the main idea of the passage
A. Being a good listener makes you a good talker.
B. Listening to people isn't something easy to learn.
C. Most listeners are too shy to show themselves.
D. Sometimes a loving silence does a better job than beautiful words.
Yesterday I went to buy a little tree for my father. When I was talking with the cashier(收银员), he asked what I would be doing with this little tree. I said that it was for my dad, because he no longer lived at home.
The cashier just stopped and looked at me with the kindest look. He shared with me that his grandfather couldn't live in their home any longer either because he had Alzheimer's disease(阿尔茨海默病). So I shared with him that my dad was on the same journey. We talked about the difficulties because of the illness, not only for those who are ill, but also for their families.
When I was paying for the tree, he said, "Because this is for your dad, let me see what I can do for you." He took some coupons(优惠券) from a drawer and reduced my cost by over 60% .
I thanked him for his kindness. We wished each other Merry Christmas and the best hopes for our loved family members.
On the way home I kept thinking of the kindness he offered me. It was truly a moment of "kindness given, kindness received," I made Dad's tree more beautiful as soon as I got home. So thankful. So blessed.

Hi, Lingling,
16 It was great to hear from you. You sound great fun, and I can't wait to meet you. 17 I’m quite tall, with short fair hair, and I wear glasses. I’ll wear jeans and a T-shirt for the journey, but I'll also carry my warm coat. I’ve got your photo. You look so pretty. I’m sure we’ll find each other!
18 You sound just like me! I spend a lot of time with the school orchestra (管弦乐队), but I also like dance music — I love dancing! I enjoy sports as well, especially tennis. I work hard at school and I feel stupid when I get bad marks and I get angry with myself — I should work harder.
19 Well, at first I felt a bit sad because I will leave my mum and dad for a few days. 20 I’m quite shy when I'm with strangers. I'm always sorry when I do something wrong, so please help me do the right things when I’m with you in China.
See you next week!
Yours,
Sally

Starting a book club is easy—all you need is to love reading. Here's how to get off to a flying start.
When you set up your book club, the first thing is to get members for your club. They could be friends, family, or those you know through various activities, but they should all love to read. A small group of seven to ten people is usually an ideal size for a book club. Too many can make it difficult to make discussions.
Once you have a group, agree on how often you want to meet—usually clubs meet monthly. Pick a regular date and stick with it. That way, members can easily plan for it. Send out e-mails a week before the meeting to give people a written reminder. Set the length of meeting time. An hour is a good start. Two hours usually does the trick.
Then, you need a good place. Libraries, parks and restaurants are all good meeting places. For many clubs, home is the best place as it's quiet. And noisy public(公共的) places can make talking less relaxing and comfortable. If members bring a plate of food or a bottle of drink, it can help start conversations.
Please don't forget the most important thing—the book! Think about the books your club will enjoy. Fiction Non-fiction Your club can choose books in different ways. You can take turns to recommend books. Let everyone vote on what books to read. Anyway, make sure to keep it light and fun.
After all this has been decided, your book club is ready. Now, it's time to hold the first meeting. Enjoy your reading.
How to start a book club
1_____ members You can include those who love to read. Size matters: seven to ten people are enough for discussion.
Setting the time Set a 2_____ date. Send everyone an e-mail to remind them of the monthly meeting beforehand. Decide on how long the meetings will be.
Deciding where to meet You can meet in 3_____ places, like libraries, parks and restaurants. For many clubs, meeting at home is 4_____ relaxing and comfortable.
Choosing the books Think about the books your club will enjoy. Decide on the 5_____ of choosing books: allowing everyone to recommend or vote on the books.
