Can you imagine what Edison’s life was like in the years after he had invented the electric lamp Many things had to be invented and built before the electric lamp could really be used by all. Everything that was needed had to be thought of and built by Edison and the men who worked with him. There was no place where they could buy the things they needed. Edison made 360 inventions more in order to send electric power to wherever it was wanted. Edison directed (管理) all the work himself: testing new machines, pulling wires under ground, fixing lights, and so on. He seemed to be everywhere at the same time. He wanted his men to do as much work as he did. But he never asked them to do things that he himself would not do or could not do. He had never thought much about regular hours for sleep; he often forgot completely about sleeping. He slept for a few minutes at a time, in the middle of the night, in an underground room at his power station, with a metal box as his bed. During these days, he almost never saw his wife and children. Everyone probably expected that Edison enjoyed his success when his work was completed. However, he did not notice at all the money and honor he received, because soon he became interested in other ideas.

Fifth-grader Kayla Martel loves basketball. But her school doesn’t have a girls’ team. So for the past four years, Kayla has played on the boys’ team at St. John the Apostle School in Clark, New Jersey. That hadn’t been a problem until earlier this year. The team was told that it either had to ask Kayla and another girl to leave the team or end its season early.
The team, called the Chargers, plays in a league (联赛) that didn’t allow mixed teams after fourth grade. When the league leader found out that there were girls in the team, he gave the coaches (教练) bad news. The team could keep playing but only without the girls.
Keisha Martel, Kayla’s mom, is one of the Chargers’ coaches. She asked the team to take a vote (投票), knowing it would be difficult for the kids to choose.
“They all said, ‘It doesn’t matter. We’re a team and we’re sticking together (团结一致),’” said Keisha.
The Chargers wasn’t allowed to play for a few weeks, but then the league reversed its decision. The team, girls included, played the rest of the season. They even made it to the championship (锦标赛) game — and won!

Let’s look at two old but popular inventions we use in our daily life.
Band-Aids(创可贴)
The first Band-Aid was made by American Earle Dickson in 1921. The idea came to him by chance. Dickson’s wife Josephine often cut her fingers in the kitchen. At that time gauze(纱布) and adhesive tape(胶带)didn’t come together. People had to cut them to the right size. Dickson found they were always too big and soon fell off. So he put a piece of gauze on the center of a piece of tape. This is how he made the first Band-Aid.
Later Dickson’s new inventions became very popular all around the world.
Bubblegum(泡泡糖)
Bubblegum was invented by accident. In 1928, American gum company worker Walter E. Diemer played around with new chewing gum recipes. Chewing gum had already been invented more than half a century before then. But Diemer found that the gum he made was easy to blow. He blew a bubble and then saw the possibilities. He took some of his new gum to a shop and it sold out in a single afternoon. Since then, Dubble Bubble—the first brand of bubblegum—has made kids happy all around the world.

Today most people can't live without a television set! During the 1980s and 1990s the quality (质量) of both pictures and sound became very, very good. The first VCR (video cassette recorder) was introduced in 1977 in the USA.With VCRs, people could record their favorite programs, but the quality was not perfect. The invention of the CD and the DVD during the 1990s produced a better quality of both pictures and sound. The first DVD player was introduced in 1997 in the USA.At that time you could not record programs with DVD players, but today DVD recorders are available.
During recent years, people began to develop new ways to record television programs with machines that had memory. This way your television set can save films, almost like a computer. This new invention is called TiVo, and it has become very popular in the USA.With TiVo, television sets are similar to computers, but at the same time computers are similar to television sets. With a computer you can now pay to download (下载) films and TV programs from the Internet and watch them on the computer screen. In the future, computers will probably take the place of television sets.
Living rooms with large-screen TV sets and big speakers (扬声器) are like small cinemas at home: they are called “home movie theaters”. Watching movies at home or in the cinema are both great and fun, but some people think that cinemas are still the best places to watch movies.
