There are many wetlands(湿地) in China and some of them have become the world's important wetlands. The Chinese Yellow Sea Wetlands are among them. They are in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. They are home for many different kinds of birds and animals. The world's largest Milu Deer Nature Reserve(自然保护区) is in them. More than 700 milu deer live freely there. There are not many red- crowned cranes in the world, but every winter you can see some in the Red-Crowned Cranes Nature Reserve in the Yellow Sea Wetlands.
The temperature in the wetlands is usually neither too high nor too low. There is a lot of rain and
sunshine too. They are really good places for wildlife. Offering food and home for some special kinds of animals and birds is not the only reason why we need to protect wetlands. Wetlands are important because they also stop floods. But some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means there will be less and less space for wildlife.
Luckily, more and more people are beginning to realize the importance of wetlands and wildlife. Every year, on February 2, many activities are held to tell people more about wetlands.

It was a great pleasure for the family to move to a house with a very big garden. Betty and Tony could climb up trees, grow flowers and even play badminton. They liked to watch the birds flying among the trees in the garden. They even started to put food out to attract more birds.
Everything was fine for a few days until one afternoon. There was a strange bumping noise on a
window. Betty went outside and found a small bird dead on the grass. Its neck seemed to be broken.
"It must have flown into the window, " Tony said when his sister Betty called him to have a look. "Ah, yes, look here. You can see the mark where it hit the window. There are a couple of tiny feathers stuck on the window. "
"Poor thing! "Betty said.
During the next month, five more birds died in the same way. "Why would they fly to the
windows " they wondered. Finally they knew the truth. When the birds were flying, they couldn't see into the rooms. All they saw was the reflection(倒影) of the garden. They thought that they were flying into trees because they saw trees reflected by the window.
"Something has to be done to save the birds, "the parents decided.
At first, the family tried keeping curtains(窗帘) across the windows, but this made the room dark.
Then they bought some strong black paper and cut out the shape of a hawk. They made six hawks ---one for each window. They stuck the hawks to the windows. They looked pretty and did not keep out much light. When the birds saw the hawks, they would fly away.
After that, there were no more dead birds. The family were much happier.

"Keep out or I'll chase you out! This is my property! "
You hear this every spring. It is a long musical sound - a bird song! Birds use their songs to communicate different messages with one another. People who study bird sounds are learning their meanings.
Usually it is the male that sings. Early in spring he sings to say that he has picked out a piece of property. He sings to attract a female of his same kind. Together they will raise a family in his territory(领地). He sings to tell all other birds of his kind to keep out.
Each kind of bird has its own type of song. Cardinals(北美红雀) sing something that sounds a
little like "What cheer, cheer, cheer". Towhees(红眼雀) sing, "Drink your tea. "
Most of the time, birds pay attention only to the songs of birds of their own kind. Cardinals answer cardinals, and song sparrows(歌雀) answer song sparrows. A cardinal knows that a song sparrow will not try to steal its mate. So you can see the reason why a cardinal may chase away another cardinal but will not bother a song sparrow.
Most different kinds of birds eat different things. To find enough to eat, a bird needs a big piece of land to search in. Many kinds of birds have some ways of dividing up the land into territories. Song sparrows, cardinals, ovenbirds(灶巢鸟), and white-throated sparrows(白喉带鹀) are some of the birds that have territorial systems.
Especially in early spring, birds work out the boundaries between their territories by singing "keep
out" threats and by chasing and fighting each other. The birds continue singing to tell females that they have set up territories. Neighbouring birds seem to agree that there are fences between their pieces of property. Then they do not have to waste energy chasing each other instead of taking care of their young.
Scientists guessed that some birds could recognize their neighbours by small differences in their songs. Two scientists who studied white throated sparrows found that these birds can even tell the difference between songs of individual birds of their own kind. White-throated sparrows have songs that seem to say "I’m your neighbour" or "I'm a stranger" or "I'm your neighbour to the west". Other kinds of birds could tell neighbours from strangers by their songs too.
( )29. What is the article mainly about
A. How birds build up their territories.
B. How birds sing to communicate.
C. How male birds chase after females.
D. How scientists recognize birds' songs.
( )30. A cardinal may not keep a song sparrow out of its territory because _________ .
A. they sing different songs
B. they have separate territories
C. it feels no threat from a song sparrow
D. song sparrows are friendly to other birds
( )31. Some birds have their own territorial systems so that _________ .
A. they don't need to fight or chase each other
B. they often work together against threats
C. they build up fences to protect their property
D. they find a big piece of land to search for food
( )32. What can we conclude from the article
A. Male birds use their songs to communicate more than females.
B. Scientists have learned the meanings of all white-throated sparrows singing.
C. Not all birds can recognize their neighbours by small differences in their songs.
D. White throated sparrows are the smartest birds the scientists ever found.
