情态动词表示推测
情态动词表示推测的意义和用法
情态动词(Modal verb)本身有一定的词义,表示语气的单词。但是不能独立作谓语,只能和动词原形一起构成谓语。情态动词用在行为动词前,表示说话人对这一动作或状态的看法,多用来表达能力、意愿、义务、许可,还可以表示推测。
英语中表示推测的情态动词主要有 must, can, could, may, might, can’t等。
must > can > could > may > might >can’t
句式 情态动词 含义 用法
肯定句 must 一定 表示有把握的肯定推测。
may/ might/ could 也许;可能 表示没有把握的肯定推测。
否定句 can’t/ couldn’t 不可能 表示有把握的否定推测。
may not/ might not 可能不 表示不太有把握的肯定推测。
疑问句 can/ could 可能 表示推测。
情态动词表示推测的意义和用法
1、must
must表示可能性最大的肯定推测,意思是“一定、准是”。只能用于肯定句。如果要表示“一定不”,应该用can’t。
如:她没接电话。她肯定是出去了。
She isn’t answering the phone. She must be out.
他肯定知道答案。
He must know the answers.
2、may/might
may, might表示推测“可能性”时,意思是“可能”,“也许”。might语气更委婉,可能性更小。may, might表推测时,可用于否定句,但不用于疑问句。
如:他可能不在家,不过我也不确定。
He may/might not be at home, but I’m not sure.
迈克为什么没来上课?他可能生病了。
Why didn't Mike come to class He may/might be sick.
3、 can / could
can表示推测“可能性”时,一般用于否定句或疑问句。can在疑问句中意思是“会,可能”。
如:他不可能拿了她的书包。
He can't pick her schoolbag up.
could 表示某事有可能发生或可能是事实。
如:不要吃它,可能坏了。
Don't eat it. It could go bad.
情态动词表示推测的注意事项
(1)情态动词表示推测时,无时态区别,只有语气差别。表示推测的情态动词的语气强弱顺序如下(由强到弱):
must > can > could > may > might
(2)含有must的句子(must表推测)变为否定句时,要用can’t
如:He must be at home.
He can’t be at home.
情态动词表示推测可以分为以下几种情况:
(1) 情态动词+ do
此结构表示对现在或将来情况的推测和判断。
如:—Do you know where she is now
—I think she might travel in Beijing.
(2) 情态动词+ be doing
此结构表示对现在或将来正在进行的情况的推测和判断。
At this moment, my father can’t be working in the office.
如:此刻,我父亲不能在办公室工作。
(3) 情态动词+ have done
情态动词表示推测可以分为以下几种情况:
此结构表示对过去情况的推测和判断。
The road is wet. It must have rained last night.
如:道路是湿的。昨晚一定下雨了。
(4) 情态动词+ have been doing
此结构表示对过去正在进行的情况的推测和判断。
Your mother must have been looking for you at that moment.
如:你妈妈当时一定在找你。
