On the basketball court, Juan Adames is a point guard (控球后卫), always looking to put teammates in the best position to score. He specializes in assists (助攻).
  Off the court, he’s the same way. As a senior at Germantown Academy in Philadelphia, US, Adames has created a nonprofit organization called Leaders of Tomorrow that focuses on mentoring (指导) young people as well as helping to create and coordinate (配合) community service projects.
  “We want to make a difference,” the 18-year-old said. “We're near-peer (接近同龄的) mentors, trying to connect with young kids and give them some knowledge that maybe they wouldn't get in a school setting.”
  Adames said he was inspired to create his organization when he learned of the shooting death of a young man outside a recreation (娱乐) centre in the summer of 2018. “I thought, ‘If there had been some places for him to go after school he still would be alive',” Adames said. “It made me determined to figure out a way to help.”
  Adames and others reached out to state representative (议员) Jared Solomon of Pennsylvania's 202nd District to initiate (发起) a series of community service projects. Leaders of Tomorrow hosted a Stop the Violence rally (集会) that included guest speakers and community leaders. “I used to hear all the time that young people today don't want to get involved (参与),” Solomon said. “\[But\] these young people want to make a difference.” The group raised $1,000 (more than 6,000 yuan) to buy food to make meals for the Woodstock Family Centre and joined with Solomon to distribute meals to needy families.
  “We're not surprised by Juan's leadership and his vision (远见),” said Germantown Academy basketball coach Matt Dolan.
“He has been a role model for our younger group.” Adames and the group's members feel their work is more important than ever. “Young people are being heard,” Adames said. “They're inspired to try to make things better. That's what Leaders of Tomorrow is all about. We want to put \[these young kids\] on the right path to help make our society better for everybody.”
