A group of wild Asian elephants which traveled for more than 17 months have arrived home. They are now safely staying in their home, their traditional habitat in Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve.
At 8 p.m. on a Sunday, they were guided across a bridge over the Yuanjiang River. The elephants were under watch and kept away from residential areas(居民区). Their condition was good and people continued to guide them back home safely. Before they arrived at the Yuanjiang River, forestry experts spent days studying 80 km of the riverbank before they chose a bridge on the 213 national highway for them to cross.
Heading north, the elephants passed through Pu’er, Honghe and Yuxi. In June, they reached the outskirts(市郊) of Kunming.
The local government sent workers and drones(无人机) to watch the elephants 24 hours a day, clear roads for them to pass safely and lead them away from populated areas with food. More than 180 metric tons of food, including pineapples and corn, was fed to the
elephants. Even if they encroached on(侵占) communities, none of the elephants or people were injured.
Asian elephants, which are included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species as “endangered”, enjoy the top level of protection in China. The forestry department and the local government plan to develop a national park.
