The Other Mrs.
by Mary Kubica (Park Row, $27)
“Full of Secrets in the latest terror-meets-family drama from the best selling author of The Good Girl,” said Cogdill. A troubled couple and their children move from Chicago to an island in Maine to attempt a fresh start, but trust among them is not enough even before a niece joins the household and a murder puts the father’s honesty in doubt. The Other Mrs. “moves at a quick pace, with believable and surprising twists and an unexpected ending.”
Sharks in the Time of saviors
by Kawai Strong Washburn (MCD, $27)
“Despite its unclear feeling of of sadness, this novel about Hawaii feels like a drop of tropical sun,” said Jenny. It follows a native islander who is regarded as a potential savior by his family and community after he falls from a boat at age 7 and is rescued by uncommonly gentle sharks. As Nainoa and his family members take turns telling the story. “The author’s hoping for the land and traditions of Hawaii is so strong you might catch his homesickness.”
The Jetsetters
by Amanda Eyre Ward (Ballantine, $28)
“Sure, this novel’s plot sails through the Hallmark into Love Boatish,” said Judy Blundell. But after a woman brings her family together for a journey, which she’s won by writing about a long-ago story with Pablo Picasso, humor and an attention to detail carry the story. Through the author’s involvement in many tricks, she “uncovers how family journeys are saved, over and over again, by short period of moments of connection with celebrities.”

by Nguyen Phan Que Mai(Workman, $27)
“The story of Vietnam is so much bigger than most Americans know,” said Diana Nelson Jones. This “wonderful and vivid” novel by a Vietnamese poet follows a single family across several decades of 20th-century occupation and civil war, but “the story is inspired by the family’s extraordinary adjustment” and by the author’s writing skill. “The book is so destroying in places as to be unbearable, but then the flow of the writing and the story brings you onto a wave of hope.”

I’m A Nurse By Day But An Artist By Night
Hello everyone! My name is Joe Mari, I am a male nurse from the Philippines who is working overseas, and sometimes, being away from your family and friends, you’ll mostly feel lonely, bored, and homesick. So in my spare time I draw portraits of people using Faber Castell classic coloured pencils, ballpoint pen, and pencil for black and white ones.
I started drawing and won my first inter-school competition when I was 5. By that time I had no dreams of being an artist, as I thought it was all a ‘game’ and I was never serious about art. I became a part of my school paper as a cartoonist until high school and then time passed and I have forgotten about drawing. It went on to being just a hobby until I tried to get back at it again two years ago. I watched YouTube videos every night, trying to figure out how to improve my skills. Drawing people’s faces is a fascination for me, which is obviously displayed in my works.
You’re probably wondering why I never took any courses related to art, and why I am a nurse. You see, there is a fine line between your dreams and your passion. I took the medical field in hopes of giving service to as many people as I can. I have always been fascinated by the world of Science and by the world of Art at the same time.
My intention in sharing this story is not to compare, but rather to bring out whatever other interests you may have inside you. Sure you may be working in front of a desk at day, but who knows, maybe you also rock out with your band at night. With enough patience and perseverance, nothing can prevent passion.
I hope I inspired you all with my story, so go on, get that paper and whatever tool you can use to create art!

September usually marks the start of a new season—but what you call that season depends on where you are and whom you ask.
In the UK, people will tell you it’s “autumn”. However, cross the Atlantic and you’ll find that people use both “fall” and “autumn” interchangeably when referring to this time of year. In the English language, the season has two widely accepted names. Why does it have to be so confusing
According to Dictionary.com, “fall” isn’t a modern nickname (昵称) that followed the more traditional “autumn”. The two terms were actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other.
Before either word appeared in the word list of English, the seasons separating the cold and warm months didn’t have common names. The main thing people did during the pre-winter period was gather and collect crops, so it was called “harvest” in Old English.
Then, in the 1600s, more and more people left their farmland and moved into cities. Without farming, the term “harvest” became less useful to city dwellers (居民). Some English speakers needed another name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during that season, so people called the season “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall” for short. But at the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, was introduced in England and overtook (超过) “fall” as the standard term for the harvesting season.
At the same time, British settlers were making their first long journey to North America. They brought the words “fall” and “autumn” with them. Today, using both words to describe the season is a uniquely American phenomenon.
8.Which can best describe the feeling when “fall” and “autumn” are used
A.Puzzling B.Interesting C.Shocking D.Inspiring
9.Why a new word “Fall” was created
A.A short name for autumn was wanted.
B.A normal name for the season was wanted.
C.A proper name to describe crops was needed.
D.A different name to replace harvest was needed.
10.What do we know about “Autumn”
A.It is a French word. B.Farmers like using it.
C.It means harvesting crops. D.It appears later than “fall”.
11.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Harvest and Fall B.Falling for Autumn
C.The Season of September D.Searching for the Origin
Let the kids sleep, said Scott Maxwell in the Orlando Sentinel. In the US, nearly 9 out of 10 high schools begin classes before 8:30 a.m., and 10 percent before 7:30, and buses pick up kids more than an hour before dawn, forcing tired teens to get out of bed without enough sleep.
This early-bird schedule flies in the face of findings that 87 percent of America’s high school students are short of sleep, and that high schools and middle schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. This is “hardly a trivial matter”, because research shows that teens who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight and low in spirits and do poorly in school.
There is no arguing the benefits of enough sleep, said the Los Angeles Times. However, what is “less clear” is that forcing high schools and middle schools to start later is the path to achieving the benefits. One study found that later start times might mean just an additional “15 minutes per night” of sleep. Another study found that teens got “significantly more sleep the first year of a schedule change” but then started going to bed later by the second. And since the buses that transport older kids also carry primary school students in most areas, adjusting high school start times would require adjusting the start time of younger kids.
Since the AAP’s 2014 report, about every believable medical science organization has come out in support of later start times. The Brookings Institution found that later school start times were followed by “a significant increase” in test scores. Some New Jersey schools moved all start times to 8:30 and found “reduced lateness, and teachers reported students were more ready to learn.” The proof is in, and it leads to only one decision: “Start school later.”
12.What does the underlined expression “a trivial matter” refer to in Paragraph 2
A.Something impossible B.Something unimportant
C.Something necessary D.Something valuable
13.What can we learn from the third paragraph
A.The benefits of enough sleep is no so clear.
B.Primary schools start earlier than high schools.
C.Teens need less sleep when they are one year older.
D.15 minutes’ more sleep per night is not enough for teens.
14.What improvement can be seen if students get enough sleep
A.Reduce more weight B.Go to school much earlier
C.Get better marks in the tests D.Be not in low spirits anymore
15.What suggestion may the author give to the government
A.Start school later B.Get enough sleep

I could not hear what was going on the other end of the phone, but it was making her cry, and I was crying too.
When I was younger, I used to watch my mum get ready for work in the morning, tracing the line of her lashes with eyeliner, putting on blouses and heels. She said that she liked how it made her feel. I saw her as somebody who would always be there to protect me, who was capable of anything.
The phone call in question was one that she had been waiting on for a few weeks: the final diagnosis of her breast cancer.
The process of treatment was slow and hellish. After the treatment, all her hair thinned, and she wore false eyelashes some days and penciled in the gaps in her eyebrows. My mother, who would never take naps or sleep past eight in the morning, was suddenly so exhausted by being awake that she would sometimes stay in bed for the whole day. Actually after the surgery, she felt too painful and weak to lift a gallon of milk.
She once asked me if I was glad to be aware of her illness. I spent the majority of the year of her treatment worrying but I told my mother that I was glad to have had the privilege of worrying.
Before my 13th birthday, I’d always considered a birthday to have fun and the joy of becoming a year older. Seeing my mom for the first time after surgery was the end of that. That isn’t to say that she had changed fundamentally; my mother was still beautiful and kind and incredibly strong, but the person that she was no longer tied to my ideas of her.
Growing up and beginning to see your parents as people are inseparable processes. That birthday was the turning point of a year that forced me to begin to see my mother as a person, someone whole and real.

The New York Times states that cheerleading is the fastest growing girls’ sport, yet more than half of Americans do not believe it is a sport.
A sport, according to the Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors, is a "physical activity against/with an the opponent(对手),governed by rules and conditions under which a winner is declared, and the primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants ". Because cheerleading follows these guidelines, it is a sport.
Cheerleading includes lots of physical activity. Like gymnasts, cheerleaders must learn to perform lifts and tosses. This is where the “fliers" are thrown in the air, held by “bases” in different positions that require strength and cooperation with other teammates.
Cheerleaders goal is to be the best. Just like gymnasts, they are awarded points for difficulty, technique, creativity and sharpness. The more difficult the motions, the better the score. Cheerleading is a team sport, so without cooperation, first place is out of reach.
So why do many Americans not think cheerleading is a sport Some people argue that cheerleaders are just “flirts(摆动)in skirts” with their only job to entertain the crowd, but cheerleaders today compete against other teams and work just as hard as other athletes.
Cheerleading is a sport. It is a physical activity that is governed by rules under which a winner can be declared and its primary purpose is to compare the skills of participants. Hopefully, cheerleading will become as well-known a sport as football and basketball, and even appear in the Olympics since cheerleaders are just as athletic and physically fit as those involved in the more accepted sports.
8.Which of the followings are the key elements of a sport
a. rules b. audiences c. skills d. competitions e. balls
A.abed. B.acd. C.acde. D.ace.

A.Cheerleading Is a Sport B.Views Vary on Cheerleading

I love snakes. My mom definitely does not. When she was a kid, snakes used to hide in warm spots under the furniture. So she grew up afraid she’d step on a snake. I grew up hoping I’d see one... outside! Lots of people who are afraid of snakes have never even seen one. So where does our fear come from
Scientists wonder about this too. Their experiments with adults, kids, and even babies show that it’s complicated. People may not be born afraid of snakes, but we are born able to see them quickly. In tests with pictures, people picked out snakes faster than they could find flowers, frogs, and caterpillars. It wasn’t just snakes, though. People also found spiders and angry faces faster than “safe” things like flowers. It seems like we find things that might be dangerous to us faster than things that aren’t
People also learn to fear snakes faster than we learn to fear many other things. We take our hints from other people’s scared voices and faces. Some scientists think we’ve evolved this way—faster to see snakes and faster to learn to fear them. After all, if we had to be bitten by a snake to learn that it’s dangerous, we might learn our lesson too late.
So why does it matter if we’re afraid of snakes It may not matter much to us, but it matters to snakes. People protect animals they like, not animals they fear. Snakes may not be as cute as dolphins, but they’re just as important to the environment. Snakes eat insects that are pests to humans. Snakes are also food for other animals, so when we kill snakes, we’re hurting other creatures too.
How do we get past our fears to give snakes a chance Scientists did a study recently where students of your age went on a field trip, Guides helped them find and capture snakes in the forest. Everyone could safely touch and hold a snake. It turns out that snakes aren’t so bad when you get to know them. Most people who were afraid of snakes before the field trip weren’t afraid afterward. In fact, snakes even became some students’ favorite animal. Hmm, maybe I should take my mom on the next field trip.
Remember:Always respect snakes, whether you’re afraid of them or not.
12.We learn from Paragraph 1 that her mom’s fear of snakes is______.
A.unreasonable B.questionable C.acceptable D.incredible
13.According to Paragraph 3, people’s fear comes from______.
A.school education B.others’ influence
C.self-experience D.scientific researches
14.Which paragraph shows people how to overcome their fear of snakes
A.Paragraph 2. B.Paragraph 3.
C.Paragraph 4. D.Paragraph 5.
15.Which of the following will the author agree with
A.Snakes are not dangerous at all.
B.People’s fear matters little to snakes.
C.Snakes are well protected by humans.
D.People should make peace with snakes.

1.(7.5分)Recently,the TV series Granny knows best has become a hit in China, which not only covers the preparation of 32 home﹣made meals, but the unique life stories of 16 grannies as well as the culture and nature that surround them.It is a lesson in cooking with patience and family love taught by the one who knows best﹣Granny. In the series,a young travel chef Jamie Bilbow heads on an adventure across China in search of the masters of home cooking.
Born in England,Bilbow moved to Hong Kong with his parents at the age of one. After studying at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London,he came to Beijing in 2011 to pursue his goals:learning to cook Chinese food and becoming a chef in China. He has so far lived in the city almost 18 years and developed a passion for cooking and Chinese culture.
Among numerous street sellers in Beijing,Jamie Bilbow is the one that is obviously different.Dressed in a green army overcoat and white sneakers which give a touch of China in the 1970s,the Englishman hawks "pitta and hummus",an Arab snack,on a tricycle that he wheels along hutongs at the heart of the capital city.
Wherever he went, his mobile kitchen always drew crowds. After hearing complaints from some customers who missed his food cart,he decided to settle down in a permanent (固定的) location. In 2012,he rented a warehouse from a friend and rebuilt it into a restaurant in a hutong near the Drum Tower in central Beijing.
A favorable turn came when a bilingual school headmaster invited him to teach Chinese parents how to cook Western food:Perhaps influenced by his father,a university professor,Bilbow is good at teaching. He posts information for his twice﹣a﹣week class on his blog including recipes for pasta, avocado salad and steak. The account has attracted tens of thousands of followers so far.
He has also created new dishes that combine Chinese flavors and Western styles. "That is my hobby.I love to study Chinese food and I like to make dishes with both Chinese and Western elements," he says.

2.(7.5分)With the increase in cross﹣country marriages, more and more children are growing up peaking two languages at home,if not three or more. Thus,we know it is possible to learn more than one language from a young age.We also know that children are much better at learning another language than adults. But many parents have a common question:Should they speak to their children in their first language,or try to speak to them in the second language?
Some former studies have reported that bilingual children learn language more slowly and have smaller vocabularies than others of the same age.But these studies are doubtable. They haven't taken account of several factors such as schooling and parental economic status, both of which heavily influence language outcomes.
Recently some new studies focus mainly on the advantages of being bilingual.Studies of lingual children at schools in Canada show there is a cognitive (认知的) advantage of knowing more than one language.
It appears that repeatedly switching from one language to another is like doing crossword puzzles. It exercises the brain. An important part of succeeding in everyday life depends on our selectively attending to related information while ignoring unrelated information.Bilingual children are particularly good at selective attention and keeping unnecessary reactions under control. That makes the process of learning new rules much faster. This early flexibility in cognitive function can then be used for many other tasks, giving children a cognitive advantage throughout life.
Some new immigrants have no choice but to speak to their children in their native language. While learning the local language is quite necessary, connections to family cultural backgrounds are also important.Through the native language, children can better understand their parents' native culture.Happily,in addition to the benefits of brain development, being bilingual appears to be good for the cross﹣cultural communication.
(1)What is the shared confusion of many parents from bilingual families?
A.Whether their children will lose interest in language learning.
B.Whether their children will have smaller vocabulary than others.
C.What should be the right number of languages for their children.
D.What should be the right choice of spoken language in daily life.
(2)Why does the author doubt the early studies on bilingual children?
A.They used a lot of out﹣of﹣date data.
B.They ignored some influential aspects.
C.They were conducted only in Canada.
D.They didn't focus on the advantages.
(3)According to the new studies, being bilingual can help children .
A.lead a healthier life in the future
B.do crossword puzzles more often
C.control their attention and reaction better
D.build a stronger bond with their native culture
3.(10分)A combination of decreasing sea ice and an all﹣you﹣can﹣eat﹣buffet of garbage may be drawing a massive polar bears pouring into some Russian towns. It's a worst﹣case expectation for both the polar bears and people because the invasion (入侵) increases the potential for conflict.
At least 52 polar bears have visited the towns on the Novaya Zemlya islands in northern conflict Russia over the past few months, The Washington Post reports. The bears are getting into homes and office buildings, making officials declare a state of emergency. Videos uncovered by The Guardian show the bear appearance and their hunting for food at the local dustbin.
To be clear, polar bear attacks on people have historically been fairly rare, says Geoff York, an expert at the nonprofit Polar Bears International. "Polar bears see people, people see polar bears, and then everybody walks away," he says. But the worry is that when bears and people live close together, the risk of conflicts increases. And human food is a major draw to bears of all sorts: that's why campgrounds in regions with black and brown bears tell campers to pack away food and throw rubbish into bear﹣proof containers.
For these polar bears, other sources of food are hard to come by right now. To hunt seals, polar bears need sea ice. So at this time of year, you wouldn't normally expect to see polar bears on land, according to another expert, lan Stirling. "That pretty well tells the story," Stirling says. "Climate warming is what's pushing the bears on land on the western side."
The situation on Novaya Zemlya is a preview of what's to come as the climate continues to warm and people push into a melting Arctic,he says. "What we're seeing there in Novaya Zemlya is a possible reality of the future. "
(1)With the invasion of polar bears, what is Geoff York concerned about?
A. The continuous reduction of sea ice.
B. More attacks between bears and people.
C. Bears' being poisoned by waste food.
D. The loss of polar bears' born nature.
(2)What can we infer from the passage?
A. The officials haven't taken measures for possible conflicts.
B. The campers are to blame for polar bears coming to towns.
C. It is common for polar bears to enter towns for food.
D. It is hard for polar bears to hunt seals without sea ice.
(3)What is forcing the bears onto land according to lan Stirling?
A. The rise of temperature.
B. Delicious food in dustbins.
C. The shortage of baby seals.
D. The sharp increase of sea ice.
(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The effects of climate warming.
B. The food sources for polar bears.
C. Why do polar bears enter Russian towns?
D. What's the future for the melting arctic?
