Victor’s project
As part of my history project on transport, I did some short interviews with people in my neighborhood. My first interview was with my friend Susan’s grandmother, Mrs. Sanderson.
Question 1
How did you get to school when you were young
I walked to school with my friends, except for Fridays when we had to carry all of our things for school sports. Then we caught the bus. I enjoyed walking because we could chat on the way. I didn’t like it when it was raining though, but Mum always made sure I wore my raincoat and gumboots. On the other hand, I became a strong walker, and I believe that’s why I’ve been healthy all my life.
Question 2
My parents drive me to school. Why didn’t you go to school by car
You know, we were not rich enough at that time. We could not afford a car until after I had finished school.
Question 3
How did you get around when you weren’t going to school
We often went for a family trip by train. Most weekends we went on picnics and I loved playing with my cousins in the park. The trip took much longer than it would take by car today of course.
Question 4
How do you get around now
I still love walking, but I need to drive my grandchildren around, so I mainly use my car. It is fast.

Katie’s father was at the airport waiting to meet her. She was going to spend a week with him, and usually she really enjoyed their visits. But this time was different: her dad was getting married, and Katie wasn’t at all sure if she liked the idea.
On the way from the airport to her dad’s house Katie almost kept silent. Finally, her dad asked, “Do you want to talk about it, Katie ”
For a moment, Katie sat silently. Then she said, “I’m sorry, Dad. I just don’t think I want you to get married.”
“I thought you liked Celia,” Katie’s dad said.
“I do like Celia.” Katie answered, “It’s not that at all. I just don’t know if I want her for a stepmother—that’s totally different.”
“It really is different,” her dad agreed, “But I hope you’ll get to like having Celia as a stepmother. She likes you a lot, you know, and I’ll bet Megan will, too.”
“Who’s Megan ” Katie asked. She hadn’t heard that name before.
“She’s Celia’s daughter,” her dad replied, “She is your age, actually, so maybe you’ll even have something in common.”
After dropping Katie’s luggage (行李) off at her dad’s house, Katie and her dad went to meet Celia and Megan at a restaurant. They were going to have dinner together. When they got to the restaurant, Celia and Megan were already there. Celia introduced Megan to Katie. At first, Katie didn’t know what to say to Megan. Recently, many people think it’s risky to use credit (信用) card numbers online. However, from time to time, we all use passwords and ID numbers on the Internet. We think we are safe, but that may not be true! A new kind of attack (攻击) is being used by dishonest people to steal IDs and credit card numbers from web surfers. This new kind of attack is called “phishing”.
Phishing sounds the same as the word “fishing”, and it means that a thief is trying to trick people into giving away valuable information. Like real fishermen, phishers use bait (诱饵) in the form of great online deals or services. For example, phishers might use false emails and websites to trick people into revealing (透露) credit card numbers, account usernames, and passwords. They imitate (模仿) well-known banks, online sellers, and credit card companies. Successful phishers may make as many as 5% of the people believe and give away their personal information.
It’s really a big problem! Actually, tricking 5% of the online population is huge. Now more than 4.6 billion people have access (进入权) to the Internet, and 75% of those Internet users live in the wealthiest countries on Earth. It has been reported that phishers send more than 40 billion false messages each year. Even by tricking only 5% of the people, phishers can make a lot of money.
Amy, 18, from California, received an email. A man told Amy that she could get a million dollars in her account as a reward if she sent a thousand dollars to him. Amy did as the man said at once. The “thief” used Amy’s Social Security number to get credit cards in her name and transferred her money.
How can people avoid being cheated online Above all, they have to learn to recognize the email that has been sent by a phisher. Always be careful with any email with urgent (紧急的) requests for personal information. Phishers typically write upsetting or exciting, but false, statements in their emails so that people will reply right away. Never give out personal information to phishers. And if an offer sounds too good to be true, it is.
9. Phishing is compared to ________ according to the passage.
A. making money
B. playing games
C. catching fish
D. writing emails
10. Which writing skill is used in Para. 3
A. Giving examples.
B. Listing numbers.
C. Raising questions.
D. Using sayings.
11. Which of the following in the dictionary best explains the underlined word “transfer” in Para. 4
transfer v. (transferred, transferring)
①to move from one place, school, job etc to another
②to connect the call of someone to someone else’s
③to move money from one account to another
④to change from one bus, plane etc to another
A. ①
B. ②
C. ③
D. ④
12. Besides introducing what phishing is, the writer also tells us how to ________.
A. help to catch phishers
B. reply to urgent emails
C. pay by credit card

Thirty-Six Stratagems(计谋), which show our ancient Chinese wisdom, are our ancient culture treasure. And many of these stratagems can still be put into practice in many fields, such as war, politics, business and even daily life. The following are four of them. Let’s enjoy the charm of our traditional culture.
Stratagem One
When a thief is in your house, you’d better shut your doors at once in order to prevent him from running away.
Why For our ancient Chinese, there are two reasons. First, if you let your enemy run away, he will come back. Second, once your enemy succeeds in running away, it is dangerous for you to chase him.
Stratagem Two
This stratagem is from a poem by Du Fu, a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty. A line in the poem reads: “To shoot the man on horse-back, shoot his horse first; To catch the robbers, capture their leader first.”
In a war if you want to beat the enemy, attack the leader first. Once the leader is caught, their forces will break down and fall into chaos.
Stratagem Three
Chinese always believe that tigers are more powerful when they are in the mountains. Once they leave mountains, they will become less powerful. And there are a few Chinese sayings linking tigers with mountains.
The stratagem advises you not to directly attack an enemy in his own area. Instead, you should try to make him leave his place first, making him lose the geographical advantage. In this way, your enemy will be beaten easily.
Stratagem Four
Experienced fishers all know how to prevent a hooked fish breaking the line. Move the fish line from side to side to gradually make the fish calm down and get tired, and then you can catch it easily.
In the same way, once your enemy is trapped, he will often struggle, trying to run away. Leave him the false feeling that he still has a chance to run away. When he gets tired and loses his guard, you can capture him with less difficulty.
13. Which of the following describes Stratagem Two
A. Shutting the door to catch the thief.
B. Catching your enemy’s leader first.
C. Letting the enemy off to catch him later.
D. Tricking the tiger out of the mountain.
14. From the stratagems above, we know that ________.
A. it is wise for you to attack enemies in their own places
B. it is impossible for people to make others lose their guard
C. it is dangerous to give your enemies a chance to run away
D. it is better to shoot the man on horse-back first not the horse
15. Where can we probably read Thirty-Six Stratagems
A. In a guide book.
B. In an art book.
C. In a science book.
D. In a classical book.

Many Chinese primary and middle-school students can’t do housework today and do not take such work seriously. As a result, some are unable to cook or wash their own clothes when they enter college.
The Ministry of Education has recently released the new curriculum standard(新课程标准) for housework education for students from Grade 1 to Grade 9, making it an independent course that students must take at least once a week. The new standard requires students in Grade 1-2 to learn to sweep the floor, Grade 3-4 to learn to plant cabbages, and Grade 5-6 to master the skills of cooking two to three dishes. Students in junior middle schools will learn to repair simple electrical machines. This new standard has been widely welcomed by the public.
1
Wang:
We all know the importance of housework education. However, at home, some students are unable to do the simplest housework, as their parents insist they should devote themselves to study. Some of them gradually grow to be unwilling to do any kind of housework. Housework education is supposed to raise students’ interest in labor, help them experience different kinds of housework and, most importantly, correct their attitudes toward labor. The housework course will become an important step to develop and improve personalities of students.
2
Li:
In order for students to develop in an all-round way, it’s absolutely necessary to add the housework course to school curriculums, which aims to encourage students in primary and secondary schools to progressively learn and love housework. It is important to make the housework class interesting, so that the students will really gain some practical skills. For this reason, schools should add professional(专业的) teachers to give the classes, instead of adding this new stress on parents and other teachers who are already busy with their daily work.
3
Zhang:
Some people think it’s unnecessary to waste time on learning housework. If you want to have a meal, you can order food online, and for electrical machine repairs, you can ask for specialized help. However, people with the basic skills for daily life can go much more confidently and smoothly through everyday life.
It is the first step in encouraging young students to develop a healthy
concept(观念) of labor and to be able to take care of themselves in daily life.
16. Which of the following is true according to the new curriculum standard
A. Students in Grade 1-2 should learn to plant cabbages.
B. Students in Grade 5-6 should learn to cook 2-3 dishes.
C. Students in Grade 3-4 can repair simple electrical machines.
D. Students should take the housework course at least twice a week.
17. According to Wang, why can’t some students do any basic housework
A. Because students don’t realize the importance of labor.
B. Because housework can’t improve students’ personalities.
C. Because housework classes are not interesting as expected.
D. Because their parents require them to spend more time on study.
18. Which of the following opinions comes from Li
A. Ordering food online is a good way for students to save time.
B. Non-professional teachers should help give housework classes.
C. Students get useful skills and confidence through housework classes.
D. Teachers of the housework course are expected to make classes interesting.
19. The passage mainly wants to tell us ________.
A. the importance of the housework course
B. the new stress on both teachers and parents
C. different opinions on the housework course
D. the concept of the new curriculum standard

Technology and sustainability(可持续性) are two driving forces in the world today. For the agriculture department, sustainable agriculture technology must be the new trend, and farmers should follow it.
The following sustainable agriculture technologies are necessary.
Smart irrigation
Crops need water—that’s needless to say. However, how they get water is another story.
With smart irrigation technology, water can be put to good use. New irrigation systems with smart technology can report soil moisture(湿度) and temperature in real time. These new technologies help farmers properly take care of crops in a more efficient way. For example, most crops have specific requirements for temperature and moisture. The new irrigation systems can show farmers whether they need to make changes for their crops’ growing environments. In this way, they may help reduce the waste of water.
Drones
Drones’ abilities get them a place on this list. They can do a lot and most importantly, they can make the boring and tiring farm work much easier.
These devices have high-definition cameras that take pictures and videos. Through wireless control, just at home farmers can fly the drones over the fields and check on crops. If one area of crops isn’t doing well, farmers can quickly record the details and then spray chemicals with the help of the drones.
Data and software
Data is rich in this tech-driven world. Farming and data working together can greatly change the way farmers plant, harvest and water.
As computers gather information, they report it all back to a central system. So when farmers learn in which area crop health needs to improve, they can use water and fertilizer(肥料) more efficiently, causing less waste.
The three technologies are helpful for farmers to save costs, labor and energy. And they can contribute to the final goal of agricultural sustainability—that is to improve the environment. As these new technologies continue to develop, we are sure to have a cleaner environment.
Sustainable agricultural technology is the future—and it will change the game.

“I wish I had straight hair”; “I’d like to be taller”. At times , we all want to look a bit more like someone else. However, the pictures we see on TV and social media can give us improper ideas about how our bodies “should” look. The truth is that everybody is different — and that’s a good thing. Accepting and feeling good about our bodies is really important for our self confidence (自信).
Body confidence is when someone accepts and behaves kindly towards their body. That includes our size and shape , skin color, appearance and any physical disabilities. Jade Parnell from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), says that having body confidence is “about being accepting of your body and what it does for you”.
If you feel positively (积极地) about your body, you are more likely to take care of it. Research has even shown that you are more likely to take part in activities and perform well in school. However, feeling agitated about your body could make you step back, do less well at school and even feel down. Parnell says that the cost of trying to achieve the “perfect” appearance is high. She says, “If you re spending a lot of time trying to look a certain way, you will have less time to spend with friends and to make important memories.”
It’s important to remember that everybody is different. To develop a positive body image, Parnell says, “Try to talk positively about your own body and other people’s bodies. Try not to pay too much attention to appearance. Instead, think about what your body does for you; do your legs make you run really fast ” She also suggests treating your body well by eating different kinds of foods, exercising to feel good and to have fun, and getting plenty of sleep. Remember that you are more than how you look.
27. The writer thinks that the pictures on TV and social media ________.
A. are perfect for people to follow

B. avoid talking about others’ bodies
C. spend more money on your appearance
D. remember what you used to be like
30. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To encourage readers to take more exercise.
B. To remind readers not to eat too much food.
C. To lead readers to build up body confidence.
D. To advise readers to treat their friends well

Scientists are looking for ways that we can effectively use the light and heat from the sun. One idea that has caught their imagination is solar roads. They are expected to produce clean and renewable energy.
With solar panels on the surfaces, solar roads cost more than traditional roads. However, besides the functions of traditional roods, they have the panels to receive sunlight and change it into the energy to supply power to homes, factories and street lighting. There are four layers in a solar panel:
Base layer: It is made of insulation material and forms a good grip with the road below this layer.
Middle layer: This is the most important layer. It holds all kinds of power lines connecting all the solar parts in the panel, like LED lights and the heating system.
Top layer: This layer is super-strong glass. It allows the panel to hold the weight of the heaviest vehicles.
Capping: This is the topmost layer used to offer extra protection to the solar parts in the panel. The layer must be rough enough to provide the traction for the safety of vehicles.
With the smart design, solar roads can successfully charge the vehicles on them. And the roads have inbuilt LED lights to replace the traditional rood signs and lines, which are usually painted and harmful to humans. What’s more, the heating systems in the solar roads can take care of the snow and ice on the roads for drivers.
Test solar roads have been built in several countries (France, China, USA, etc.) since 2014. The first word solar road project, Metrics of Watt Way in France, was set up by a French company called Construction Colas. It was an example of low effectiveness. In the first year, it had been expected to produce around 767 kWh of energy a day, but it only produced 409 kWh. Even so, the production could increase with design improvements. Of course, more time is needed before this technology is put into use.
Solar roads may not be widely used in the near future, but they are indeed great for an environment-friendly and energy-saving world.

Hearing that Erin was coming for the silver wedding party, Mr. Joe and his wife got worried.
“Erin the thief!” said Mr. Joe to his wife. “Anything smaller than a table, and more expensive than paper, would finally be found in his bag.”
“He’s sure to come for the presents we’ve received,” added Mrs. Joe. “We can’t hide them all. How can we deal with him ”
“We must keep an eye on him,” said Mr. Joe.
As soon as Erin arrived, the couple started to keep a sharp lookout. After dinner, the three talked nervously from one boring topic to another in the living room.
Suddenly, Erin asked, “You’ve got so many presents. Can I take a look at those pretty silk scarves ”
“Only it’s annoying to have seven of them,” Mr. Joe blurted.
Erin studied the scarves carefully, lost in thought. The couple got more anxious.
After Erin went for sleep, Mrs. Joe counted the presents immediately. “I’m not sure if we’ve lost anything,” she doubted.
“He must have taken something,” claimed Mr. Joe angrily. “The awful pig hasn’t brought us a present. How dare he take anything from us ”
“Let’s go through his bag late at night,” Mrs. Joe suggested.
The search was a short one. They found a silk scarf carefully placed in the bag. Mrs. Joe quickly picked it up and put it into her pocket.
