“I just want a normal birthday party,” April told Bailey as they walked home from school.
Bailey knew what April meant. April’s parents loved the environment. And because April happened to be born on Earth Day, all her parties had an Earth Day theme. “Remember when you turned seven ” Bailey said.
“How could I forget the Throw-Out Blowout ” said April.
“We helped out at your garage sale and donated the money to charity. And when you turned eight—”
“It was a Tree Spree,” finished April. “We planted maples.”
“Last year, we all collected newspapers to recycle,” said Bailey.
“The Print Sprint ” April groaned.
Bailey giggled. “I thought it was fun.”
Later that night, as April loaded the dishwasher, she said, “I’d like to plan my own party this year.”
“Sure,” said Mom, “We could have a Compost(堆肥) Carnival.”
“Great idea!” said Dad.
April cleared her throat “Pd like to go to Maze Craze(疯狂迷宫) instead.”
“Really ” said Dad, surprised.
“I guess we could do that,” said Mom.
April couldn’t wait for her birthday! She and her friends would have so much fun. And they wouldn’t have to think one bit about the earth.
The following weekend, everyone gathered in the parking lot outside of Maze Craze. “Thanks for coming,” said April “I’ve been so excited about my party. No shovels. No collecting recyclables. Nothing earthy about it.” She shifted her feet. “Then I got here this morning and saw this parking lot.”
April’s friends glanced around. Plastic bottles bounced across the cement. Newspapers and fast-food sacks blocked the storm drain. Shopping bags rustled in the trees.

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Devin was 16-year-old, who was a most hardworking boy. He took things seriously and always went all out for what he was doing. Recently, he had led his soccer team to the big game--Championship game, which was scheduled on Thursday afternoon.
For Devin, Thursday would be huge--the big soccer game in the afternoon, and the school’s autumn concert in the evening. Ms Poltis had chosen him to sing a brief solo. Devin couldn’t wait till Thursday.
As the team gathered after daily training on Tuesday afternoon, Coach said ”Be here by 6:30 on Thursday to warm up”. “Six thirty ” Devin asked. That didn’t sound right. Coach explained that it would be a night game and that they would play under the lights.
Devin’s heart sank. The concert was at 7:00, which was almost the same time as the game. He couldn’t possibly do both. He sat on the bench, pulling off his cleats (球鞋). His teammates were super excited. They were on the edge of a champion, and Devin was a big reason why. He led the league in scoring, and his soccer knowledge made him like a coach on the field. He couldn’t let his team down by skipping the game.
Devin frowned (皱眉). He would tell Ms Poltis in the morning. There were other kids could sing the solo. He wasn’t the best singer anyway, and he knew it.
That night, Devin lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. “No matter how hard the struggle, I will never let you down…”. The lyrics of the solo flew into his mind. The solo was only four lines in the middle of a song that the entire choir would sing, but every time he sang the song, he would be full of strength to carry on. His team was counting on him. The soccer game was a perfect excuse. But so was Ms Poltis. It was a long time before he fell asleep.

The McDonnells lived in a small brick house in Larchmont, a suburb of New York City. Jim was foreman of mail carriers at the post office where he had worked for 25 years. Married in 1960, he and Anne were childless.
On the evening of the eleventh anniversary of their marriage, carrying out the garbage, Jim McDonnell slipped on icy steps, and struck his head. A few days later, driving to work, he lost control of the car, hit a telephone pole, and banged his forehead against the windshield. The following day he fell off the stairs, and again he banged his head. Found unconscious, he was hospitalized for three days with a cerebral concussion (脑震荡). One day in the same month, Jim borrowed a friend’s station wagon and drove to Kennedy Airport to pick up Anne’s brother and family. When he returned the borrowed car at 10 p.m., he was unaware that the wallet containing his identification had slipped out of his pocket onto the floor of the car. After that, he was never seen again.
So what really happened to Anne’s husband During his walk home, Jim had indeed blacked out (昏厥), losing all ability to remember who he was and where he lived. What happened then is unclear. The next thing he knew was that he was in downtown Philadelphia, a city he had never visited before. Seeing signs advertising the services of a James Peters, a real estate broker, Jim adopted James Peters as his own name. He had no past; his only reality was the present. James Peters got a Social Security card, which could be obtained at that time without showing a birth certificate, and took a job in a health club. He next worked at a cancer research institute, cleaning out animal cages. He also got a night-shift job at the P&P luncheonette, where he became well known for his omelets (煎蛋卷), as well as his kindness and good humor.

【答案】About a month before Christmas 1985, colleagues noticed that Jim had grown unusually quiet and depressed. Something seemed to be turning in his mind. On December 22, Jim had fallen and banged his head. The next day at work he seemed distracted, and late that afternoon he had fallen again, striking his head. On December 24, he awoke feeling confused, yet delighted. After almost 15 years, he knew who he was! He was James A. McDonnell, Jr., of Larchmont, New York. His wife’s name was Anne.
Anne had just returned home from Christmas Mass, where she lit candles and prayed for Jim. A light snow was falling, and she was in a hurry to leave for Christmas dinner at her sister’s before the roads grew slick. Then the doorbell rang. "Oh my," she thought, "this is not a good time for a visitor." Anne opened the door — and saw a man with a full white beard. Immediately she recognized Jim. She couldn’t speak.
To Jim, Anne looked a little older, but prettier too. His heart overflowed.
“Hello, Anne,” he said.
