I had a problem. Talent Night was coming up, but I had no talents.
Kate can make anything using origami (折纸). Tommy creates breath-taking beats on overturned plastic buckets. Olivia trains her petty dog to do tricks. And those are just my friends. My grade also boasts four dancers, a gymnast, two bakers, a yoga expert, six singers, and five artists, among others.
Every day my teacher asked if I’d decided what to do. And every day I reminded her that I had no talents.
“Nonsense, Benjamin,” she said. “You’ll think of something.”
“I’ll just have to be sick the day of the show,” I announced to my friends one afternoon. “If you get a cold, be sure to cough on me.”
“You must have a talent,” said Kate. “Let’s make a list. What are you good at ”
“Eating,” I answered. “Watching TV.”
Kate rolled her eyes. “Benjamin, be serious.”
“Tormenting (捉弄) my little brother.”
“Are you kidding me ” Kate looked at our friends. “Come on, guys. What are Benjamin’s talents ”
“He’s good with dogs,” said Olivia. “My dog adores him.”
“Oh, great,” I said. “I can sit on the stage while he licks my face. Benjamin Belinski, Human Dog Toy.”
“Benjamin’s funny and humorous,” said Tommy. He turned to me. “You could do a comedy routine.”
“Yeah. Every joke could be about how I have no talents,” I said.
“Benjamin,” said Kate, “maybe you don’t know how to juggle (变戏法), but your birthday parties are the best.”
“Yeah,” agreed Olivia, “and you always get us together to do stuff. Like having game nights or riding bikes after school—or when we held that yard sale. The week you had the flu we didn’t do anything fun.”
“You’re like the glue that holds us together,” added Tommy.
“Oh, great,” I said. “Benjamin Belinski, Human Glue Gun.”
But their comments got me thinking. Lying in bed that night, I came up with a plan so exciting that it took me two hours to fall asleep.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Paul and Marie lived in Hossegor, a fashionable seaside resort (度假村) on the Atlantic coast of southern France. They were both in their late fifties. She had dark eyes and black hair while he was a little taller, with gray eyes.
They started a small company when they were young. Through many years of hard work, they established themselves against strong competition. They always worked many hours every day together in their office, often until late into the night, even on weekends, knowing that only very good work would provide them with loyal customers and success.
After years, they were able to buy a pretty little apartment in a modern building with a balcony (阳台) overlooking a large and beautiful garden that featured a beautiful lawn, some decorative bushes all around, some trees here and there, a small pond in the middle, and even a decorative fountain.
Inside their apartment, everything was very tidy, yet a bit artistic. There were some nice pictures on the walls—dreams of beauty in nature—and on a glass shelf, Paul’s collection of toy locomotives (火车头), symbols of his dreams of exciting travel. Actually Marie had been interested in drawing and painting since she was a little girl, but she has no time to develop her talent because of her busy work.
Thus went week after week and year after year until a terrible accident happened to their company, causing a heavy financial loss to them. One of their ships, carrying a variety of goods, knocked into a floating iceberg on its trip to America. As a result, the ship got very badly damaged with all its goods and staff on board. When the couple heard the bad news about their ship they burst into tears. Paul became greatly depressed while Marie, who felt less desperate (绝望的) then, tried her best to calm him down by saying that everything would be all right as long as they didn’t lose heart. Gradually, Paul managed to calm himself down and began to face reality. Consequently, they had no choice but to close their company.

“It’s not looking too good, darling, I think you’d better pack a few things and go to your mother’s place. And you’d better take Rosie and Monty with you.”
Putting down the phone, Sara sighed. Tomorrow was her husband Tony’s birthday. She had planned to cook him a nice meal and then surprise him with the new mountain bike she’d bought for him. If she went to her mother’s house, Tony wouldn’t get his present for days.
However, her mother’s house was the best place to be right now. Being on higher land, it would be safe from the floods. It had been raining heavily for almost two weeks and the river near Sara and Tony’s house was rising higher and higher all the time. Tony and others from the village had spent the last two days putting sandbags along the side of the river to stop it from overflowing. Now they feared that their hard work had been useless and soon the whole valley would be flooded.
Sara dressed baby James in warm clothes and collected the things she would need for him over the next few days. She put the lead on the dog and went in search of Monty, the cat. It took her a long time, but eventually she found him safe and warm under the covers on her bed. She placed him in his cat basket and took him into the kitchen where James and the dog, Rosie, were waiting.
Just as she was reaching for the car keys, Sarah heard a sound like the noise bath water makes when you pull out the plug. She looked at the backdoor, water was flowing in underneath. Turning around, she saw dirty brown water fountaining out of the drain and filling the sink. Realizing that they were trapped by the flood and it became impossible for her to drive out, quickly she put James into her backpack and pulled onto her back. Calling to Rosie, she picked up the cat basket and ran to the front of the house and out into the front garden, where the car was parked.

【答案】In the morning, I couldn’t wait to tell my teacher. I zoom past my friends huddled together on the playground and run into the classroom. “That’s a marvelous idea, Benjamin,” she says.“Resourceful, original, and true to who you are.” I felt thrilled at my teacher's words. In the next few weeks, I write a zillion lists, make sure every item gets checked off, and ask a lot of people to do jobs. Kate agrees to make twelve origami centerpieces. I ask a variety store to donate lanterns. I get the principal's permission to cover the school's tables with blue and yellow paper.
On the night of the big event, I felt so nervous that I had to force myself to eat dinner. “The gym looks magical,” my teacher says. “This place has been completely transformed, ” I hear one visitor whisper. When the show begins, each person with an act knows his or her place in the lineup. Tommy wows us with his drumming. The singers stay in tune throughout their songs. 【答案】It was not long before they had difficulty in supporting themselves. In reality they were unable to afford some necessities in life such as food and clothes, let alone the luxuries that they had been used to possessing. Gradually Paul came up with an idea to sell their apartment to overcome the financial obstacles but it was rejected by Marie instantly. After all, the apartment meant a lot to them and selling it was apparently unbearable. However, what other ways could they find to solve the problem
One day they went to an art exhibit in town. There they saw a picture about a scene of their town but they agreed that it was not impressive. No sooner had Marie returned home than she set about drawing a picture about the same scene. Surprisingly Paul praised her for it and encouraged her to draw more, which greatly increased her confidence. What was more satisfying to them was that a friend offered to purchase it at a high price. It was then that the turning point of their life really arrived.

【答案】The water was already up to her knees. Rosie was swimming beside her. Knowing the water would soon be much deeper, Sara ran to the car and opened the doors. She threw the cat basket onto the roof of the car and pushed Rosie up beside it. Using the car seat as a step she climbed first onto the front of the car and then onto the roof. James, safely attached to her back, made no sound at all.Sara stared down at the water which was rushing past the car. It was already half way up the doors, and still rising.
Sara, together with James, Rosie and Monty, was hungry and frightened on the roof of the house when a boat appeared in the distance. They were extremely happy and shouted at the boat “here!here!”,but the boat seemed not to head for their direction. Roise was worried and anxious, then they four shouted at the boat together “help!help! here we are”. Luckily, the people on the boat replied to them. They were rescued and the warm—hearted people sent them to Rosie mother’s place. They showed their sincere gratitude to the people who helped them in need.
