Precious family moments
When our three children were small, and I'd clean up after baths for the thousandth time, pick wet towels off the floor, squeeze water out of yellow rubber ducks and call the kids to come back and brush their teeth,I often thought of Someday.
Someday I'd do something important.
When I read bedtime stories, the same stories I'd read so many times that I knew them from memory,my brain froze from the repetition, and my mind wandered to Someday.
Someday life wouldn’t be so routine.
When I stared at a pound of frozen ground beef, considering my two standard options of spaghetti or sloppy joes, trying to remember when we last had what,I thought of Someday.
Someday I'd be creative.
Then one day I had an epiphany.I wasn’t one who was going to leave a mark on the world or build an empire. But I was going to leave a mark on this family.and I already had an empire. It was right under my nose, tucked in(盖好被子的)bed by 8 o’clock.
The Someday I often dreamed about was being shaped by all the todays and yesterdays.Someday was in the making now.
I was doing something important.Caring for children, creating family and trying to make a home that is a sanctuary(庇护所)from a rough world are some of the most important things a person can do.
Creativity We didn’t always have ground beef.Sometimes we had chicken or fish.It wasn’t the food that mattered;it was being together around the table, the conversation, the laughing, the connecting.
As for routine,no routine stays the same. But even as the routine changes, basics are taught-the fact that choices matter because choices become habits, and habits become a way of being, and that is how character takes root.
The things that matter most-knowing you’re loved and knowing how to love others, being generous, extending charity, working hard and recovering after failures and setbacks are learned little by little, one day at a time.
Someday is closer than you think.

From a young age,Michael Platt loved two things:the Rev.Martin Luther King,Jr.and cupcakes. He imagined ways he too could fight for justice. He memorized figures about income inequality and childhood hunger. But he also spent afternoons at his home computer, amazed by YouTube bakers who made perfect cupcakes.
When his parents gave him a pair of Toms shoes for Christmas three years ago,Michael saw a way to connect his twin passions. At age 11,he founded a bakery that operates on the Toms one-for-one model:For every cupcake, cake or cookie that Michael sells,he donates another to the homeless and hungry.Twice a month,he heads to locations to pass out goodies.Michael, now 13,he especially enjoys handing out cupcakes to kids.
“I know I like cupcakes, but also cupcakes are part of a child’s childhood so they should get them,”said Michael, noting that he always eats one with whipped icing(打发的糖霜)on his birthday.
Michael calls his baking business Michaels Desserts. He left out the apostrophe(撇号)as a reminder that he is baking for others, not himself.”I always wanted to have a purpose for what I do,”he said.”It’s all about helping people not just having a purpose for yourself, but thinking about,How does this touch other things ”
When he started the bakery,he knew that he wanted his business to do more than make money. That’s why the mission of Michaels Desserts is fighting hunger and giving back, which Michael accomplishes through his giveaways.Michael hopes his cupcakes inspire others to work for social equality.
Sometimes,Michael admits,he grows tired of being in the kitchen. Then he remembers the homeless boy he met once while handing out cupcakes.A couple of days afterward, the boy’s father messaged Michael on Facebook to say that his son, encouraged by Michael’s example, now aspired to become a baker.

Inflammation(炎症)is me body’s defense mechanism. You might have experienced it if you sustained physical injuries like a sprained(扭伤的)ankle or had an infection, like the flu, which causes a sore throat.Inflammation can occur in any organ, but it is most common and easy to see in the skin. You will notice redness, heat and swelling.
Usually this is a good thing,as it shows you have a healthy immune system that can kill pathogens(病原体)organisms that can cause diseases and repair damage to the skin. However, inflammation can be a double-edged sword as in some people it can target the body’s healthy cells, causing what is called an autoimmune disease.Long-term,this can lead to conditions like arthritis(关节炎)and asthma.
Given this danger,a new study from Cambridge University,UK,has been looking into brain conditions that are not usually linked to autoimmune diseases. The study found that inflammation of the brain-known as neuroinflammation(神经炎症)has been linked to several forms of dementia(痴呆).
In this new study, published in the journal Brain, researchers scanned the brains of 31 volunteers with three different types of dementia. The first scan was to highlight neuroinflammation, and a second scan illuminated toxic(有毒的)proteins that are linked with conditions that negatively impact the brain. The team also examined 12 post-mortem(after death)brains.
These experiments showed similar patterns of toxic protein build-up and neuroinflammation, suggesting a relationship between inflammation and dementia.
“Even we were surprised by how tightly these two problems mapped on to each Other. Now,the big question is what role this neuroinflammation plays in the decline of the mind associated with dementia,”said Thomas Cope, one of the authors of the study.
After establishing the relationship between inflammation and dementia, the study now aims to find out if inflammation does its own damage,or if it is just a consequence of the build-up of toxic proteins in the brain.
Another of the study’s researchers,James Rowe, highlighted the importance of further research. He said the frequent presence of inflammation in Neurodegenerative (神经退化的)diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease,“offers hope that immune-based treatments might help slow or prevent these conditions”.
12.Why is inflammation usually a good thing
A.It can defend our body against asthma.
B.It gives long-term protection to healthy cells.
C.It is a refection of a healthy immune system.
D.It allows injuries to heal themselves.
13.What did the study from Cambridge University find
A.Neuroinflammation does its own damage to the brain.
B.There are links between neuroinflammation and dementia.
C.Increased toxic proteins in the brain cause dementia.
D.Toxic protein build-up and neuroinflammation have different patterns.
14.What is still unknown according to Thomas Cope
A.How neuroinflammation is connected with dementia.
B.How the decline of the mind is associated with dementia.
C.To what extent inflammation and dementia are linked with each other.
D.How to prevent neuroinflammation from developing into dementia.
15.What can be inferred from James Rowe’s words
A.Inflammation is one of the causes of neurodegenerative diseases.
B.Immune-based treatments would be the best cure for dementia.
C.Research on neuroinflammation could help treat neurodegenerative diseases.
D.Further research will focus on methods of cutting toxic proteins in the brain.

The act of social distancing(社交距离)has become an effective protective measure against the novel coronavirus(冠状病毒) and a part of everyday life across the world. Many countries have launched different social distancing measures. Some are strict while others are creative. Let’s take a look at three special quarantine (隔离) measures around the world.
Panama
With more than 3,000 confirmed cases by April 12, the Central American country Panama has announced strict quarantine measures. One of them is to separate people by gender (性别) to go out.
Starting in April, males in the country are required to leave home on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday while females can go out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week. No one is allowed to go out on Sundays.
To further prevent the spread of COVID-19, citizens are able to leave their homes for only two hours at a time.
“This absolute quarantine is for nothing more than to save your life,” the country’s security minister Juan Pino said at a news conference.
But according to the Guardian, the quarantine measures do not apply to civil servants(公务员) or other essential staff(职工) who are battling against the novel coronavirus on the frontline.
Colombia
ID numbers are unique identification tools for individuals, but they may also be used to decide when people can go out in Colombia during the novel coronavirus pandemic. According to the BBC, people in some Colombian towns are allowed to be outside based on the last digit of their national ID number.
For example, in northwest-central Colombia, people with an ID number ending in zero, four or seven are allowed to leave the house on Monday, while those with an ID number ending in one, five or eight can go outside on Tuesday. Similar quarantine measures have been proposed in the nearby country of Bolivia.
France
Though outdoor exercise is a good way to keep healthy, it can sometimes cause too many people to gather in one place. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Paris has banned all outdoor exercise between 10 am and 7 pm.
Outside of this time span, people are allowed to exercise individually as long as it’s for less than an hour and within one kilometer of their home. If people break the rule, they will face fines of between ?135 (about 1,040 yuan) and ?375.

My 11-year-old daughter has been awarded an academic scholarship to a private schoo1. It’s only a small discount, but the scholarship means she’ll skip the waiting list provided my husband and I can cover$20, 000 a year.
Should we pay the private school fees, or choose free education instead
I always assumed my children would go to a private school, like I did. Not because my family is wealthy, but because I believe that the best education is private.
It took years for me to make peace with the fact that my two children attended our local public primary schoo1.
They’ll go to a private high school, I told myself. Yet here we are. My eldest is now in her last year of primary school, and my husband and I will struggle to afford private schoo1.
If we’re to send our girl to private school, I could increase my work hours. My law degree was supposed to be my ticket to a good job and a solid income, but that’s not quite how it turned out.
The guilt and expectations are mine alone. I’m terrified that my daughter’s potential will be wasted at the public schoo1. And yet, I know that working more hours will make me break down.
During many sleepless nights, I felt troubled by the decision. Although I want the best for my daughter, I have my own dreams too. I can’t sacrifice everything for my precious girl. I explain that I want to be a positive role model for my daughter, and an unhappy parent is terrible strain on a family. I point out not even the privilege of private school will protect my children from disappointment or struggle.
And ultimately, it’s decided. My daughter is going to the public school behind our home. She couldn’t be more pleased.
It’s taken me a little longer, but now I’m content. More than my fancy private school education, it’s my family that shaped me. With high school now 25 years in the past, I can no longer remember the mathematical problems and Shakespearean quotes I once knew so perfectly. The lessons from my childhood home, however, have proved impossible to forget.

B. she didn’t want her daughter to struggle in private school
C. however hard she worked, she couldn’t afford private school
D. public school is the most balanced choice for her family
6. When the decision was made, ___________.
A. the author’s daughter was disappointed
B. the author felt sorry and guilty about it
C. both the author and her daughter were satisfied with the result
D. the author inspired her daughter to be a positive role model at school
7. What is the main message the author intends to convey in the last paragraph
A. Family influences a child’s growth more than school education.

After astronaut Rusty Schweickart looked down at the Earth from space for the first time, he described a sense of awe that has become common to almost every space traveler since. “You realize that on that little blue and white thing there is everything that means anything to you, all history and music and poetry and art and death and birth and love, all of it on that little spot out there you can cover with your thumb.” No matter what country you’re from, you return from space with a feeling that our home is tiny, fragile, and something we need to protect.
Anyone who reads the new book Growth by one of my favorite thinkers will come with similar urgency. The author, Czech-Canadian profe Vaclav Smil, approaches things from a scientist’s point of view, but he reaches the same conclusion: The Earth is fragile and “before it is too late, we should launch the most fundamental task of making any future growth consistent with the long-term preservation of our planet.”
Before I get into how Smil came to this conclusion, I should warn you. Although Growth is a brilliant combination of everything we can learn from patterns of growth in the natural and human-made world, it’s not for everyone. Long sections read like a textbook or an engineering guidebook. And it has 99 pages of references!
The book covers everything from agriculture to steel production to smartphone use. Smil’s goal is to show that no matter what field you’re talking about, eventually you hit growth limits. As Smil writes, “My aim is to explain varieties of growth in evolutionary and historical perspectives and to appreciate both the accomplishments and the limits of growth in modern ivilization…”
I don’t agree with all of his analysis. In particular, I'm more optimistic than he is about the degree to which today’s renewable energy technologies carl be used, and the pace at which scientists and engineers will develop new clean sources. In my view, Smil underestimates our accelerating ability to model the physical world using digital technologies equipped with artificial intelligence.
But I've always felt that Smil’s great strength isn’t predicting the future, but documenting the past. There’s great value in that—you can’t see what’s coming next if you don’t understand what’s come before. Nobody sees the big picture with as wide an aperture(光圈孔径) as Vaclav Smil.
8. What does the underlined phrase “similar urgency” refer to in paragraph 2
A. To protect our home is difficult.
B. It’s too late to protect the Earth.
C The Earth means everything to us.
D. We need to protect the fragile Earth.
9. What’s the writing style of the book Growth
A. Causal. B. Academic.
C. Humorous. D. Straightforward.
10. How does the writer of this article feel about the renewable energy technologies
A. Anxious. B. Objective.
C. Optimistic. D. Pessimistic.
11. What information does the last paragraph intend to tell us
A. Smil intends to document the history.
B. Smil sees the world from a great angle.
C. Smil shows great concern for the future.
D. Smil describes a promising future for us.

Solving great space mystery
Monkey King, the hero in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, is making headlines again. On Nov 30, China’s Dark Matter Particle Explorer(DAMPE, 暗物质粒子探测卫星), which is named after Monkey King’s Chinese name Wukong, found mysterious signals in the universe that may help scientists learn more about dark matter, according to Xinhua News Agency.
“This is the first time scientists have found such detailed and precise signals, ” Chang Jin, vice director of the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国紫金山天文台), told Xinhua.
Dark matter is a type of hypothetical(假设的)matter in the universe. Scientists believe that it influences the movement of galaxies. However, no one has ever directly observed it.
Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky first used the term “dark matter” in 1933, when he spotted something very unusual. Some galaxies that Zwicky saw were spinning so fast that they should have scattered into all comers of the universe, but they didn’t. He realized there must have been something else there that had a strong enough gravitational pull to hold everything together. He called it“dark matter”.
In one sense, dark matter is like the wind:we can’t see it, but we know it’s there.
Finding out more about dark matter could help us understand how the universe began, but being able to do so isn’t easy. Scientists believe that when two dark matter particles crash together, they form new particles and produce high amounts of energy and heat. This is why explorers like Wukong are sent to find such particles.
Indeed, “Wu” means “understanding” and “kong” means “void(空的). ” The nickname symbolizes the main goal of DAMPE’s mission, which is to understand dark matter better.
Since its launch in 2015, DAMPE has already recorded 3. 5 billion high-energy particles, reported Newsweek. And according to Science, the satellite has a lifespan of five years, which means it still has three more years to “understand the void”. “DAMPE has opened a new window tor observing the high-energy universe, unveiling new physical phenomena beyond our current understanding, ” Chang told Xinhua.
12. On Nov 30, DAMPE______________.
A. was named Wukong by Chinese scientists
B. was successfully launched into space
C. located dark matter in the universe for the first time
D. detected clear signals related to dark matter
13. According to the text, dark matter________.
A. is a spinning galaxy
B. is a type of gravitational pull
C. is made up of invisible particles that hold galaxies together
D. makes mysterious stars scattered in the universe
14. According to the text, a better understanding of dark matter could help scientists discover_____________.
A. the movement of galaxies
B. the origin of the universe
C. how crashes happen between dark matter particles
D. how to make use of high energy caused by crashes
15 What can we learn about DAMPE from the text
A. It has recorded 35 billion high-energy particles so far.
B. It will be able to keep working for another five years.
C. It was made to observe and identify dark matter in the universe.
D. It could help prevent dark matter particles crashing together.

Because I can't read,city streets present an endless series of enigmas.If I see a business,I wonder,"Is that a restaurant? A dentist? A lawyer's office?"Once,while hungry,I saw a big colorful sign.I walked in and asked a realtor(房屋中介)to see the drink menu.
Speaking of menus, eating at restaurant is a daily misadventure. Many places have photos of food, which is helpful. But if they have no photos,I walk from table to table and point at whatever looks delicious.I apologize if I've ever interrupted your dinner to point at your plate.I didn't mean to be rude.I was just a hungry baby !

One step too far
Scientists have been trying to figure out how to alter the genes of humans for many years now,and it looks like they've finally cracked(破解)the code. But while this may seem like a great step forward in science, some also believe that it's one step back when it comes to ethics.
In August,a group of scientists from the US and South Korea worked together to successfully edit a human embryo and remove a genetic mutation(突变)that would have led to heart disease, reported The Guardian.
This was achieved with the help of CRISPR,a gene-editing tool that allows scientists to"cut and paste"human DNA.
Although this was the first example of an embryo's genes being changed successfully, the benefits of gene editing have already been tested in living patients.
In 2015,a five-month-old girl from the UK was saved after doctors used edited cells to fight off her cancer. As of today, she's alive and well.
And in the US last year, scientists managed to remove HIV cells from several patients by editing the genes inside their bodies.
