Before the dark cloud cast a shadow over my life, I was a 39-year-old woman who enjoyed traveling, listening to jazz music and reading. Then my whole life changed. On November 10th 2019, I awoke from sleep with the worst headache of my life. I was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with brain aneurysm (动脉瘤)! After emergency surgery, I lay on the bed feeling shocked and lost. Yet, I knew I had to face the music.
Nine months later, my doctor recommended I start cycling to help flood my brain with oxygen, which benefited my physical recovery. I hadn’t used one in almost two decades, so I was scared. However, with the support of my wonderful cheerleader, Brian, my husband, I got on a bike cautiously. After only three minutes, I was tired and my hands were shaking. I felt powerless and wanted to give up, but Brian encouraged me with smiling eyes. I rode for a few minutes, stopped to rest and rode again. Little by little I could ride continuously for ten minutes! My husband joked I deserved the first prize!
Now, I ride whenever I have the energy. Usually, I get on the bike a few times a week. Last year I participated in a benefit ride for the local school. I enjoy traveling internationally, but haven’t had the opportunity to do so since my surgeries. I hope to one day be able to ride in another country. Until then, though, I’ll participate annually in the Good Old Summertime Classic and continue my local routes.
Biking not only restores my body but also my soul. It feels empowering to take charge of my body and life again. I know I will ride on.

Fourteen dancers wearing jumpsuits filled with sponge (海绵) and with special cotton in their mouths recreate the slightly fat figures of Tang Dynasty females. They line on stage with amusing facial expressions and humorous motions. Suddenly they are surrounded by antiques and the next second, they are hanging around in the ancient masterpieces of Ten Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains.
Like in a dream, audiences travelled back with the dancers to the wealthy Tang Dynasty. The magic—like dance program, namely Tang Gong Ye Yan (Night Banquet in Tang Dynasty Palace), was released in the Spring Festival gala of 2021 by Henan TV. The video has been watched 48.62 million times on Sina Weibo, and the view counts of related topics have passed 200 million on Tiktok by Feb 19. It has enlightened people’s passion toward the beauty of traditional culture, and consequently also spread overseas, appreciated by culture lovers around the world.
The dance has become a representation of guochao, which expresses the rise of China’s native fashion trends. A group of young artists have begun to try to demonstrate traditional Chinese culture in different ways. One of the pioneers is Chen Lei, director of the gala. In his opinion, the dance, in which modern technologies such as 3D and AR are used, is a combination of rich treasures of China’s traditional culture and modern technologies, fashions and aesthetic (美学).
Chen told the Global Times that with the development of China, Chinese young people feel more confident to promote Chinese trends to the international stage. He believes traditions shouldn’t be sealed in glass boxes at museums or merely taught in the classroom, but combined with the digital world. Otherwise, the inheritance (传承) of traditions would be artificial and empty.
28. What does the author intend to do in the first paragraph
A. To provide an example. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To add background information. D. To analyze the dancers’ difficulties.
29. What can you infer about the dance program from paragraph 2

C. It wins world—wide recognition. D. It popularizes short video platforms.
30. Which of the following words best describes the dance program
A. Traditional. B. Vivid. C. Complex. D. Creative.
31. What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Chen
A. Preserve them at museums. B. Teach them at schools.
C. Introduce them to young people. D. Recreate them with technology.

During spring in the Pacific Northwest, meltwater rushes down rivers and the wind often blows hard. These forces spin the region’s many power turbines (涡轮机) and generate electricity at a time of mild temperatures and relatively low energy demand. But much of this seasonal extra electricity—which could power air conditioners in summer—is lost because batteries cannot store it long enough.
Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), a Department of Energy National Laboratory in Richland, Wash, are developing a battery that might solve this problem. In a recent paper published in Cell Reports Physical Science, they demonstrated how freezing and unfreezing a molten salt solution (熔盐溶液) creates a rechargeable battery that can store energy cheaply and efficiently for weeks or months at a time. This will be an outcome that is significant toward renewable energy.
Most conventional batteries store energy as chemical reactions waiting to happen. When the battery is connected to a circuit, electrons travel from one side of the battery to the other, generating electricity. To compensate for the change, charged ions (离子) move through the solid material that separates the two sides of the battery. But even when the battery is not in use, the ions gradually move across this material. As that happens, the battery loses energy. Some rechargeable batteries can lose a third of their stored charge in a single month.
“In our battery, we try to stop this condition.” says PNNL researcher Guosheng Li, “The material inside the battery is made of a salt solution that is solid at normal temperatures but becomes liquid when heated to 180℃. When the material is solid, ions are locked in place, preventing self—discharge. Only when the material becomes liquid can ions flow through the battery, allowing it to charge or discharge.”
“Creating a battery that can resist repeated cycles of heating and cooling is no small task. However, we want to go through it and see how far we can take them to commercialization.” says Guosheng Li.
32. Why do the researchers develop the new battery
A. To extend the duration time. B. To protect the environment.
C To cut the cost of the battery. D. To generate more electricity.
33 What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the new chargeable battery
A. Its complex design. B. Its required temperature.
C. Its major advantage. D. Its potential market.
34. Which word best describes Li’s attitude towards the new battery
A. Confident. B. Cautious. C. Conservative. D. Skeptical.
35. What may be the best title for the text
A. Exploring the Future of Rechargeable Batteries.
B. Researching Ways to Promote Rechargeable Batteries.
C. New Technology Replaces Conventional Batteries in the Market.
D. Rechargeable Salt Battery Freezes Energy for Longer Storage.

Have you ever wanted to take a closer look at the stars and see some of the coolest parts of our universe Then you'll need a telescope, a big one.
The Hubble Space Telescope is the biggest, the most delicate and the most complex astronomical telescope ever. Hubble is eight feet across and 44 feet long and it weighs more than 25, 000 pounds. So it is much bigger than any telescope that you've ever used from your backyard. It orbits the earth at an altitude of 600 kilometers. NASA fuels it with the largest power source we know — the sun, with two large solar panels capturing sunlight. The Hubble Space Telescope is not only big in size and low on energy. It's also fast. It travels around the Earth at about 28,000 kilometers per hour, so about 17,398 miles per hour. And it orbits the earth every hour and a half. At this rate, Hubble could travel- from Los Angeles to Boston in about ten minutes.
Hubble is the only telescope designed to be maintained in space by astronauts. A series of space shuttle missions have repaired, upgraded, and replaced systems on the telescope, including all four of the main instruments; a brand — new set of cameras and spectrographs (摄谱仪) was installed in Hubble during the fifth and final servicing mission, which was completed in 2009. Although it has nearly doubled its expected lifetime, with April 24, 2020 its 30th anniversary, it still remains in operation and continues to be one of the most important tools to learn about the universe.
Hubble has made countless discoveries during its service, and answering new puzzles requires more powerful telescopes. Its legendary life will come to an end due to the aging of its components. One of Hubble's greatest legacies (遗产) is not just to answer questions about the universe but also to open up new mysteries that we can solve with future telescopes.
4. What is introduced about Hubble in paragraph 2
A. Its future. B. Its launch time.
C. Its energy source. D. Its servicing mission.
5. How many times has Hubble been repaired
A. Three times. B. Four times. C. Five times. D. Six times.

A. 30 years. B. 24 years. C. 20 years. D. 15 years.
7. What can be inferred about Hubble from the last paragraph
A. Hubble will be repaired for another time.
B. Hubble will be replaced by future telescopes.
C. Hubble fails to help observe farther galaxies.
D. Hubble keeps on performing remarkably well.

Mattel is launching a new line of Barbies made from plastic that would otherwise become ocean waste. The "Barbie Loves the Ocean” collection, which has a summer theme, comes with three dolls (each $ 10) and a beach cabin play set ( $ 20),. As part of Barbie's vlog (视频博客) series on YouTube, Mattel will pair the dolls' release with a new video called "Barbie Shares How We can All Protect the Planet.
The new Barbie line is Mattel's latest move in reaching its sustainability (可持续性)goals. The 76 - year - old toy company previously pledged to using 100% recycled, recyclable or bio - based plastic materials across all of its products and packaging by 2030. 4Earlier, the toy company announced that it was launching a program called "Mattel Play- back", which encourages consumers to send Mattel their old toys, and the company can reuse the materials for future Mattel products. The program kicked off with Barbie and two other Mattel brands - Matchbox and MEGA toys - and brands will be added to the program going forward.
Mattel isn't alone in its eco -efforts, as many large toy companies are trying to become more eco - friendly after decades of relying on environmentally destructive plastic in their products and packaging. In the Brazilian Amazon, a species of monkey called the pied tamarin(绢毛猴)is fighting for survival, threatened by habitat loss and urban development. But the severely endangered animals faces another enemy: the red - handed tamarin, a monkey that lives in the same region.
They compete for the same resources, and the red - handed tamarinds habitat range is expanding into that of the pied tamarins'. Their conflicts sometimes end in violent argument.
But in a recent study, scientists have discovered that the red - handed tamarin is changing its vocal calls to better communicate with the pied tamarin. Tainara Sobroza, an ecology Ph. D. student who worked on the study, says these calls are used to warn other species that they are invading their territory, or coming too close to a crucial survival resource. "When this happens the two species usually engage in vocal battles," she says, which sometimes prevent the violent physical battles between the two species.
Researchers compared the change in calls to speaking with an accent, "They might need to say 'tomahto' instead of 'tomato — that's the kind of delicate difference in the accent, so that they can really understand each other," Jacob Dunn, a professor of evolutionary biology who worked on the study, told The Guardian.
When analyzing the vocal call of both species, the scientists discovered that the red - handed tamarins, new call has a narrower bandwidth (带宽)and an increased amplitude (振幅),making the sound clearer and the duration of the call longer. The result is a call that travels better through the thick forest.
The hope is that this work will help conservationists to better design reserves and other survival chances for the pied tamarins. And because these two species are so rarely seen physically in the same space, listening is one way to do that work. "We don't have to actually see," Sabroza says. "We can hear the ecological interaction. "
12. What do we know about the pied tamarins

After burying it, I hurried home and went to hide my gun in my room.
I was dead silent at dinner. I felt as though every time I lowered my head, Dad was looking at me, but whenever I stole a glance in his direction, he seemed simply to be paying attention to his food. Mom finally uncovered the main dish—chicken. The dead pigeon appeared in my mind so that I almost threw up on the plate. Pushing my chair back and I ran to my room. My head buried in my pillow, I felt Dad rubbing my back. My tears slowly disappeared and I cleared my throat. “I shot a pigeon today,” “Oh ” my father replied, his expression unchanging.” And how did it feel ” “It felt... awful,” I answered.
“I’m sure it did. That’s one of the reasons I said you shouldn’t shoot birds.” I glanced at him,” Are you going to punish me ”
“Well, you misused your BB gun, and you disobeyed me. What you need is to always remember how bad it felt to kill that poor bird. Somehow, I think you will. ”And, patting me on the shoulder, he said, “Now let’s go to get dinner.”

Wherever we look, we see advertisements that attract us to buy. In today’s society, we are under pressure to constant shop. Of course, most people only buy what they need and what they can afford. However, there are some people called shopaholics, who can’t control their desire to spend money buying things. This kind of addictive behavior can lead to money problems, family conflicts, and deep unhappiness.
What are the symptoms of a shopaholic People with this problem often spend hours and hours shopping on the Internet or at the mall. Their closets are full of clothing and jewelry that they have never worn, with the price tags still on them. Their homes may be filled with shopping bags and boxes that they bought but never used. Many shopaholics are aware of their own problems, but when they go to a store, they simply can’t resist the urge to buy. Some of them are ashamed of their weakness and try to hide it by storing their purchases in places like the attic(阁楼), where others won’t see them.
Psychologists think there are several reasons for a shopping addiction. For some people, it is a way of reducing stress. For others, shopping is a way to fight loneliness or depression. For people with less confidence, shopping can be a way that they prove their self-worth. Sometimes the problem develops out of boredom. It replaces other hobbies and interests to help kill the time. Although shopping can temporarily make people feel good. they often feel ashamed and guilty later.
When shopping habits get out of control, people need professional help. They can either see a counselor(顾问) or join an organization such as Shopaholics Anonymous. Groups like this try to help people understand the reasons for their addiction and learn how to control the urge to shop. Their goal is to help people find ways to fulfill themselves rather than lead to serious debt and troubled lives.

An ordinary cotton T- shirt can be changed into body armour(盔甲), thanks to scientists from South Carolina, Switzerland and China. They combined the carbon in the cotton with boron to create a tough, lightweight fabric of boron carbide(碳化硼), the same material used to protect tanks.
Available at Wal-Mart, the new T- shirt would be not only bulletproof, but also resistant to ultraviolet light from the sun and life -threatening radioactive rays.
“The present armour is strong, but it’s not flexible and it’s very heavy. We tried to solve this problem with a different approach. In our approach, we used cotton T- shirts,” said Xiaodong Li, a scientist at the University of South Carolina. The trick for the scientists was combining melting boron with the carbon fibers inside the cotton fibers to form boron carbide. The great research began with a package of plain, white T-shirts purchased at Wal-Mart, which the scientists cut into pieces. They put those white cotton pieces into a black liquid of boron. After an hour, the cotton pieces were taken out from it and baked in an oven at a temperature of more than 1,000 degrees Celsius for an hour. As a result, only carbon and boron was left and then boron carbide came into being.
The resulting material is very different from the original ones at the start of the process—it’s lighter, stronger, tougher and stiffer than the original cotton, but it can still be bent, unlike normal boron carbide armour.
Li said that the physical features of the new material are still being tested, but “from our initial results we can say the test has been very, very promising.” “We expect that the material can stop a bullet,” Discovery News quoted Li as saying.
Covering cars or aircraft with cotton-based boron carbide, instead of the metal used today, would make these vehicles much lighter and more fuel- saving.
12. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The features of new boron carbide. B. The advantages of new boron carbide.
C. The disadvantages of former boron carbide. D. The process of making new boron carbide.
13. What can we know from the text
A. Many T- shirts are used to produce new materials.
B. The new T- shirts must be popular with children.
C. The new boron carbide contains many chemicals.
D. The new material has more advantages.
14. What’s Li Xiaodong’s attitude towards the new material
A. Confident. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Ambiguous.
15. What might be the best title for the passage
A. Traditional T-shirts are out of date. B. An ordinary T- shirt can become body armour.
C. New boron carbide has been widely used. D. Cotton- based boron carbide will easily change our life.
